The dialog between Amos and Holden when they were outside the ship fixing the antenna had a beautiful clue to the character of Amos. If you watch it again, after he questions if it was worth killing Holden or not, he asks Holder to pass him a spanner. And after he does Amos says "Thank you." -That says a LOT about Amos. As everyone is saying, there is a lot that you will miss the first time around.

Martians look more similar the Earthers than Belters do, but gravity on Mars is only about a one third of Earth's, so they don't do very well when on Earth, but can deal with it better than a Belter can. Places like Ceres and other stations on colonized moons usually have spin gravity to about the same as Mars'. That spin is why the fluids pour with a twist on Ceres. A nice piece of real science.

11:51 "Couldn't they just open the door?" They certainly could. However, the door is located on the bottom of the ship which means they would need to climb up into the center of the room. That would put the Martians at an extreme tactical disadvantage if the people inside were planning an ambush. Cutting a hole in the hull of the ship is more work, but it's safer.

So, something as small as a screw or a tiny piece of metal, going fast enough, can tear through a ship like it's butter. I mean, it's basically the same principal as a bullet. So every time a ship explodes, it's very bad news for anyone unlucky enough to be nearby. Also, Amos is a VERY interesting character. He doesn't really adhere to what we would consider a typical "morality". And get ready to be frustrated with Holden a lot! He is your classic white knight! He can't help himself! But his greatest weakness might be his greatest strength!

You're catching a lot of hints. Often they lead to understanding things that happen in the next episode...but it might be several episodes or even whole seasons before those little things suddenly make sense. Great reaction! You're very smart and you picked up on a lot in this episode! The only thing I think you may have been misguided on was the becon they learned was Martian tech. Holden and crew were lured to the Scoppuli by a distress signal. When they were investigating the ship someone made the comment that how could there be a signal with no power on the ship. Then they found the becon and Amos pulled it off the wall. They took it with them and after the Cantebury was destroyed Naomi took it apart and found that it was Martian tech. Which leads Holden and crew to believe that Mars is behind this! You have many questions, as you should at this point! Answer are coming! Looking forward to the next one!

The tablets are basically smartphones, and being a cop, he would have access to some good apps to do things like override locks etc. Yes that was a mushroom growing on the pipe. The guy who ate the mushroom that was growing on the pipe knew it was safe to eat, because mushrooms are one of the most common staple foods in the Belt. Farming can be pretty tricky for Belters since they are so far from the sun and they don't have a natural atmosphere. But mushrooms grow in the dark. Several generations have lived in the Belt at this point, and now Belters can pick out safe mushrooms to eat just as easily as you or I might select a ripe avocado from one that's too new, at a grocery store.🍄

Glad you're enjoying these early episodes. We get to learn about various parts of the solar system, and the different people who inhabit it. That scene where someone was pouring liquid into a glass -- the weird 's-shape' that pouring created is because they are on Ceres, which is big rock out in space. Humans drilled tunnels and caves all through it, and then spun it around to simulate gravity inside. Physics tells us that being on the inside of a rotating thing (like a drum, for example) is not a perfect simulation of planetary gravity. Things falling to the outside of the spinning body will appear to move a little sideways, resulting in funny steams of liquid. It's actually the same effect that causes Hurricanes in the Earth's atmosphere!

Ceres is too small to provide its own gravity. Therefore, it was spun in the past to simulate gravity by centrifugal force. Which is funny, because everyone on Ceres actually stands with their feet toward space and their heads toward the center of the body. And the side effect is that fluids don't flow straight "down".

The phenomenon that caused the drink to pour diagonally due to the spin gravity is called Coriolis acceleration. It's considered undesirable so the areas of Ceres where the Coriolis acceleration is strongest (i.e. closer to the station's spin axis) are the cheaper real estate. The scene where you see this is in a brothel, which would be one of those "low rent" areas.

Airlocks are a 2 door exit. > | | < You open one, the other door stays closed until the first door closes again. That way you don't lose all the air inside the main compartments of the ship as the other is closed. And if you go through a strict depressurizing of the chamber between the doors, you won't even lose much air from that little space. Otherwise with just one door every time you open up to space you'd loose a bunch of air to space.

> I mean didnt they think about getting more ships with ice to ceres in the event that something would happen to the Cant? Things are run on a shoestring budget in the belt. Also, collecting ice is pretty routine, and having one of the ice deliveries nuked wasn't something they would plan for. Nothing like that had happened previously. In any case, the journey takes many months. That is one thing that they are unable to adequately portray in the show... how unbelievably vast the distances are, and how long a time it takes to make a journey, even with their really powerful engines powered by fusion reactors.
@andiecph
@andiecph 5 ай бұрын
do you have an idea how long one trip can take?
@y00t00b3r
@y00t00b3r 5 ай бұрын
@@andiecph It can take months. It also depends on where the two bodies in space are in their orbits when the journey happens. The Martian year is 687 earth days long, and is basically circular. So, Mars would be on the other side of the sun, and travelling in the opposite direction from the direction it had been travelling 342 days earlier. And of course Jupiter, Saturn, and all the other asteroids are all moving in circles around the sun, too. So, it gets ridiculously complicated. Of course, you can speed things up if you can afford to use more fuel and reaction mass... but there's a limit to how much time the human body can spend under high thrust. I would guess that an automated ship with no human passengers could make a pretty straight line journey, applying acceleration thrust for the first half of the journey, and deceleration thrust for the second half, all at maximum thrust of 20Gs or something. But there's no way the human body could withstand that, so a ship carrying Earther passengers, would at best do that type of journey at 1g acceleration/deceleration. But even then you'd be really splurging on fuel costs. So most journeys are long, graceful curves, where the curve eventually intersects with the point in space where your desired destination will eventually be. Hopefully you and the planet you are trying to get to arrive at that point at the same time, lol ! Also, you need to be travelling in mostly the same direction, and at similar speeds, or you'll just fly right past each other.
@y00t00b3r
@y00t00b3r 5 ай бұрын
find the video titled "Voyager 2 Trajectory through the Solar System" for an example of how travel between planetary bodies works. The only thing different in The Expanse is that the engines are FAR more powerful, and we have "the juice" which allows humans to withstand heavy acceleration for short periods of time.

Airlock: An airlock is like a lock in a canal, except for air instead of water. In a canal, you move into a lock to transfer from a body of water with the water at one level, to an area with water at another level. In an airlock in space, you get in a lock to move from an area with air, to an area with no air (vacuum). An airlock is a small room with two doors, only one of which is ever allowed to be open at one time. There are also airlocks of a different kind in medical settings, pathogen research, and in high tech manufacturing environments where there is a need to keep any particles from one area moving to another area.

This show has to offer so much more than pretty accurate physics, density of details and excelent cinematography. The Expanse is a masterclass in charcter writing brought to liife by an outstanding ensemble cast down to the smallest speaking role. I am looking forward to your journey into the expanse, especially concerning Amos ;) PS.: others might tell you how much they like the character growth of Amos to which i have to disagree. The Amos we see now is exactly the same as at the end of the series. We just get to learn more and more who he is and why, which makes him one of the best written charcters in TV history.

I disagree that Amos doesn't change. I'm not going to say why because spoilers. You already spoiled that he's still around by the end of the series, so I will say that most of his growth is apparent in the last 2 seasons and your statement is more appropriate for the first 4.

@@MattNolanCustom then "every detail matters" or "there are no wasted lines of dialogue" could be considered to be spoilers too. Why not let the reactor discover it for themselves like we did? It sets expectations and therefore alters (spoils) the viewing experience. I guess we all want Andie to have the best enjoyment possible, so we do so aswell. Concerning Amos, both interpretations are now on the table which should highlight the complexeties of his at first glance simple character. Now it's up to Andie to make up her own mind if she whishes so. I chose to use a mild spoiler in order to try to redirect her obvious and therefore most likely not so enjoyable hyperattention to the details back to something that is far more relaxed and more fun: The awesome characters within the expanse.

This episode establishes just how dependent the Belters are for the bare essentials just to not die; their water comes from ice mined from Saturn's rings, their food mostly imported or derived from mushroom/soy proteins. All they have to offer is their bodies risking themselves out in space mining precious minerals from the Asteroid Belt, and they're clearly exploited by corporations/governments (what's the difference these days, right??) and barely managed by a security firm (Star Helix), no actual community-derived law enforcement. And now an ice shipment is late. And you'll start to appreciate why radical elements outside of Earth and Mars have sprung up - to actually provide relief? to fight for Belter rights? to consolidate power? to kill Earthers/Martians in revenge? It's all of those and none of those, depending on who's talking.
