Boat Friends,
Brace yourselves for one of the most thrilling adventures I’ve ever captured on my channel! Today, we’re witnessing an extraordinary feat as the “Joseph L. Block” makes its daring entry into Duluth, navigating through a fierce storm that’s brought 43 mph winds coupled with towering waves crashing hard against the shore.
Out here on the North Pier on April 28th, 2024, the air is frigid at just 37°F, with a biting windchill of 24°F. The rain hasn’t let up, pelting down so hard it’s a battle to keep my camera lens clear - thank goodness for my rain gear and rubber boots! Without them, I’d be soaked to the bone by these relentless conditions.
In all my time recording ships here, I’ve never seen a captain decide to brave such a storm by entering the Duluth ship canal. Typically, they’d anchor and wait it out for sure. That's what other ships did on the Superior entry side at the same time. The determination to push through to the CN Dock to load up on taconite is nothing short of heroic. I’m on edge, thrilled but also deeply concerned for the safety of the captain and crew battling Mother Nature’s wrath.
Join me in this intense, nerve-racking experience, and see for yourselves how the mighty 728-foot Joseph L. Block confronts one of Lake Superior’s fierce storms. It’s a testament to the brave souls who navigate these giant steel vessels. It also shows their skill!
