Boat Friends,
Brace yourselves for one of the most thrilling adventures I’ve ever captured on my channel! Today, we’re witnessing an extraordinary feat as the “Joseph L. Block” makes its daring entry into Duluth, navigating through a fierce storm that’s brought 43 mph winds coupled with towering waves crashing hard against the shore.
Out here on the North Pier on April 28th, 2024, the air is frigid at just 37°F, with a biting windchill of 24°F. The rain hasn’t let up, pelting down so hard it’s a battle to keep my camera lens clear - thank goodness for my rain gear and rubber boots! Without them, I’d be soaked to the bone by these relentless conditions.
In all my time recording ships here, I’ve never seen a captain decide to brave such a storm by entering the Duluth ship canal. Typically, they’d anchor and wait it out for sure. That's what other ships did on the Superior entry side at the same time. The determination to push through to the CN Dock to load up on taconite is nothing short of heroic. I’m on edge, thrilled but also deeply concerned for the safety of the captain and crew battling Mother Nature’s wrath.
Join me in this intense, nerve-racking experience, and see for yourselves how the mighty 728-foot Joseph L. Block confronts one of Lake Superior’s fierce storms. It’s a testament to the brave souls who navigate these giant steel vessels. It also shows their skill!
Information about the ship Joseph L. Block: greatlakesships.wordpress.com...

On November 10th 1975 I was part of the Crew of USCGC Wood Rush WLB-407. We departed Duluth Harbor at near full speed into seas breaking over the lighthouses at the ends of the breakwall in an attempt to rescue anyone who could have possibly survived the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. For the next 24 plus hours we did our best. I have the Greatest Respect for our Captain LCDR J. Hobaugh and the whole crew. Just getting underway is a story in itself. One of my proudest moments.

Wow, what an incredible message that was…. I cannot imagine having to do head out into the Storm of the Century, hoping to be able to find some survivors but knowing full well that there probably was no hope… But just like the Arther Anderson, she made the effort as would every other sailor on the lake. What an incredible story that was to be part of the search for survivors… We thank you for your service from all the Boat Friend Nation as that was a brave thing you did…….

To all, I am extremely taken aback and appreciative from everyone's comments! I'm very Thankful to each and everyone of you but have to say that mine is only one story of that night. Unfortunately we will never be able to hear the most heartfelt stories from those 29 souls who perished, they are the True Heros, they did this everyday of their lives no matter the weather, loneliness of being away from their families and yes the monotony and boredom of their daily tasks. I was but a young deckhand on the Woodrush that fateful night. I will be speaking I hope with Mike as I'm not getting any younger, I believe that there is going to be a Reunion this summer for Woodrush Crewmembers but I don't think I'll be able to make it, I am planning on making my trip next year to Whitefish Bay for the 50th Anniversary of the Loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Again I Thank each and everyone of you, God Bless and I do remember those -20 and below days with the wind out of the NE coming off Gitchi Goomy!!!!

Excellent perspective Jeff, someone said that in a previous comment and it totally makes sense. You are on that same level understanding that. I didn’t understand. @vibewithmike I subscribed yesterday. 😇 Alfred Wainwright is an English author of a series of seven guidebooks on the English Lake District. They were published between 1955 and 1966. All the maps and sketches were hand drawn beautifully from 20 years of ascending all 255 summits multiple times in all weather's. The summits range from 951 feet to 3210 feet above sea level. Thus, they were all done before the advent of Gore-Tex and fleeces. They are well worth checking out.

@markstott6689 Mark, this is what it’s all about, you’re bringing up really interesting things for people to learn about while talking about ships. I want people to check this out. I’m going to look at this even closer this evening. But I want people to get started with us. Take a look at some of these sketches by Alfred Wainwright. www.wainwright.org.uk/sketchbook-project/

@vibewithmike You're very welcome, Mike. If you get the chance, please check out his hand drawn maps. Wainwright came up with a style wholly his own. Perhaps copied since but at the time unique. I mis quoted the number of fells/mountains. There's 214 of them, of which I've done a mere 55. From the smallest, which is Castle Crag, to the highest, which is Scafell Pike. Plus, I've done another 53 in-between before ill health intervened. I do hope that people enjoy the unexpected diversion from Duluth, large ships, and Lake Superior.

Great footage and narration. I am almost terrified of deep and sometimes turbulent waters, but I also love it. I’m strangely attracted to your videos. I work at the Port of Virginia container port and see very large container ships arriving and departing most days. Not quite the same effect as seeing a vessel navigate up close and personal. We now only see them pulled off the dock and pushed into the bay before they get underway (and vice versa). I’ve always wondered why more people weren’t in awe watching these vessels. It’s part of the reason I decided on employment at the port back in 95’. I’m now a manager for the STS cranes and don’t get to see as often as I used to. Thank you for sharing. You have a great voice and I enjoy the accent, though I’m sure you can’t hear it. I’ve got a southern draw even though I’m in Portsmouth VA.

It’s a pleasure receiving a comment from you and I thank you so much for watching the video.

The story and the lyrics: Sung by many artists on KZbin : Songwriter Philip Bliss . One dark stormy night on Lake Erie, the winds were howling and the rain was relentless. The waves rolled like mountains and not a star in the sky could be seen. A ship was rolling with the huge waves and was trying to make its way into Cleveland harbor. At last, the Captain saw the lighthouse for Cleveland harbor, but he could not see the lower lights. The Captain said to the Pilot, “Is that Cleveland Harbor?” The Pilot responded, “Yes sir, it is Cleveland Harbor.” “Where are the lower lights?” the Captain asked. “They must have gone out, sir.” said the Pilot. “Can you make it into the harbor without the lower lights?” asked the Captain. “We must, sir, or we will perish in this storm!” was the Pilot’s reply. With a strong hand and with a brave heart, the Pilot turned the ship’s wheel toward Cleveland Harbor, but the ship missed the channel and crashed on the rocks. The boat sank and over 200 people lost their lives. Mr. Moody then made an application from this story: “Brethren, the Master will take care of the great lighthouse of salvation, but it is our job to keep the lower lights burning to guide men safely to Him.” After hearing Mr. Moody tell this story, Philip Bliss wrote the words and music to the beautiful hymn - Let the Lower Lights Be Burning. 1. Brightly beams our Father’s mercy From His lighthouse evermore; But to us He gives the keeping Of the lights along the shore. (Refrain) Let the lower lights be burning! Send a gleam across the wave! Some poor fainting, struggling seaman You may rescue, you may save. 2. Dark the night of sin has settled, Loud the angry billows roar; Eager eyes are watching, longing, For the lights along the shore. (Refrain) 3. Trim your feeble lamp, my brother! Some poor seaman, tempest-tossed, Trying now to make the harbor, In the darkness may be lost. (Refrain)

You do got a very good point. That day I was looking at an app that showed me the exact wind direction and it was coming straight through the canal perfectly. That is exactly the case. That captain just came charging-on through !! Gotta say your audio is outstanding, especially given the extreme wind conditions. What's your secret? I also regularly watch 'Big Jet TV' back here in the UK and his live audio is plagued with wind noise, especially when covering heavy-weather take-off & landings.
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike 29 күн бұрын
That captain is no joke. I really appreciate you watching the video. I use a special noise canceling microphone to make all of the wind videos. You would never hear me if there was wind with a normal microphone. There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.
