Girl! One time I was out grilling meat with a Korean on the circular grill. Those grills have a gap where you crack an egg and it cooks as it surrounds the meat. The restaurant owner came and put bread on that gap surrounding the hot plate. I thought it was to eat and I started to eat the egg with the bread on the gap. Turns out, the bread was put on the gap to collect the dirty oil.... whoops.

Honestly learning a language by just learning the basics and then just jumping in and figuring the vocabulary out by context really is a good way to actually learn and keep that knowledge. I did that with English once I realized that my school will not help me get to the level I wanted to be at. Just read a lot of books and watched many many movies and shows without any subtitles and eventually I just figured out new words by just listening to the context. These days I'm writing and speaking English fluently and I don't even notice if people are speaking in English or my native language anymore because my brain is just that used to understanding both.

Lol, I also thought that about subway lines before I moved to cities that had subways. The thin lines ended up being smaller lines, but i always thought they were for decoration. And that is why I always shake eggs before cracking them to see if they are raw if they are sitting out, because I have woken up in the morning and thought someone boiled eggs and cracked a raw egg on the plate or counter top.

I'm from NYC and the subway in SK is easier to navigate than NYC... Also I got the app in English and it's great. so amazing how I just click where I start from and click where I need to go and boom, it calculates how much it will cost, times of the train, what cart to be on to transfer and what side you will get off, how long it will take. it's perfect
@aliceallgrown9 жыл бұрын
I would be so lost in a city with a big subway system. In Winnipeg (where I'm from) we only have buses - no subway or passenger trains/trolleys. I'm sure I would get used to it eventually but at first I can certainly imagine it being very confusing!
@foreverhonest08 жыл бұрын
Just a quick trip on Subways! At the end of the subway cars there are seats that are against the wall, there are for ELDERLY AND PREGNANT WOMEN, I repeat, elderly and pregnant women.. The first time I rode the subway was the day after I landed and I was intimidated by all the people so I just took a seat (there wasn't many people seated here, now I know why). An elderly woman sat next to me and was really nice. She realized that I didn't speak Korean at the time but she was nice, I think she was going to let me know if I had spoken Korean. I thought everyone was starring because I was foreign haha So just in case someone needs to know so they don't make my mistake. I have heard that some Koreans get upset when this happens, luckily I realized my mistake next time I got onto a subway!
@alexashimine8109 жыл бұрын
LOL OMG THE 고향 and 고양이 HAHAHAHAHAHAHA THAT IS HILARIOUS. And it all worked out ahahahahahaha And I saw some comments about the subway system seeming difficult. At first yes, but like Megan (and me, been here about 6months now), you learn and adjust. There are apps that allow you to select which station you're starting from and where you wanna go. Then it'll show you the best path and how long it takes and what not. My favorite one that's in English is MetroidHD, but i believe it's only for Samsung phones. A piece of advise though is be aware if you need to transfer trains while on the same like. I've had multiple times where I would have to back track because my train didn't go in the direction that I was supposed to go. Be warned the 1 Line or the dark blue line at Guro splits into three directions hahahhaa

@HayHey2489 жыл бұрын
+Chaerae Park By using subway app maps to help you the first few times, you'll remember it in no time. Especially since the lines/colours/numbers are set up quite smartly its much easier to figure them out. Plus they will also announce the stop in English as well as have a map/tv inside the train that has a light that moves to where you are. If you are mostly staying in Seoul, going to the popular places, you'll really only have to remember the green coloured line and maybe light blue.
@XoceanxsunX9 жыл бұрын
I'm from Texas too! and I'm currently living in Seoul. I used the subway app and after a few times you'll just figure it out. I pretty much take the same routes and so now I've memorized where to go~

Definitely learn the system when you have free time! If you try to get to a place, and even if you're early just in case of mistakes, you need extra time and it could be a mess and not a pleasant experience. I've made that mistake one too many times on the city buses in my hometown. I bet trains are even harder!

Just for anyone using this to study Korean from the Korean sentences Megan said, there was a typo on the Korean sentence 'How long does it take?' It should be '얼마나 걸려요?' Not '얼마나 거려요?' :) I hope there are no hard feelings about me pointing this out > < I know it was just a mistake and I want to make sure people don't accidentally learn the wrong spelling~

AHAHA loving these stories because they're so understandable if you didn't grow up knowing those things! like for the soondae egg thing, it's perfectly logical to think that they're side dishes that are just sitting there for people to enjoy while they wait for their soup, esp because banchans are so common! and in saunas everyone gets boiled eggs, so why not in restaurants? reasonable conclusion, just not the right one hehe

Would you say that Korea is a good/okay place to travel alone too? I'm planing to take a trip next year during the winter and it will be my first time traveling internationally alone. Iv been studying Korean for a while and am taking classes to improve my language ability. My mom is fine with me going alone since I'll be 18, and she's not particularly interested in coming with me unless I ask her/feel I need her there to be safe. My friend who is also interested in Korea has told me that it's not really safe to travel alone so I was just wondering what other people have to say/think. Any input or opinions would be helpful, thank you! Love your videos and snaps :D

Hey :) ~ I never travelled alone, because of the reason I'm kinda scared to get lost. I think it would help a lot to make up some plans before you are actually traveling to Korea. Like.. Umm.. Looking at the map, learning something about the public transportation as in this video or maybe just note the places street names you want to visit and how you get there. Maybe learning some sentences in the case you need to ask someone ( Koreans aren't really good in english )
