During the Korean War 70 years ago, many countries received aid for corn, flour, and sugar. As the whole country was destroyed, the use of sugar naturally increased. It is also a culture of difference from other countries. In the West, bread is a meal. But in Korea, bread is a dessert. That's why food with bread contains a lot of sugar. If you prinkle sugar on rice, Koreans will react the same.

The backhanded compliment is because Korean society is high-pressure and perfectionistic. Everyone is measured against an ideal. So compliments are comparative rather than straightforward. It's also probably meant to be educational. This is what they hear from their parents too, moms especially. They aren't meaning to be rude or two-faced; rather, it comes from being too honest. Koreans are aware that nothing is ideal but they are driven to strive for it anyway, so do not expect them to be 100% positive or supportive in situations where we would be. In Korea, what's the point of being friends if you're not honest? You will see that in situations where a Kpop ifol gets into trouble and rather than tell him it's no big deal his bandmates will tell him off. (It happened with BigBang and some of their scandals.)

Actually IMO the sound effects make it doubly embarrasing because you're basically telling the whole world that you're trying to mask the sound of your farts, but it doesn't work. And even if you didn't make much noise, people can still tell that you're taking a dump by how long the sound keeps going on for. smh I never use them, and I turn off the automatic ones. It's not hard to make no noise when you're doing your thing, sheesh.

I am American, and I do this. I don't think it is backhanded, it is just a compliment. If a person does something out of the ordinary with their hair, or outfit, it is not backhanded to say, "You look so pretty today! I love what you did with your hair!" Granted, the word "today" could have been left off, but truthfully, that won't stop the receiver from still thinking, "Well, are you saying that I don't usually look pretty since you don't usually compliment me?" In reality, I think we as a people, need to stop being so negative in our thinking and just take a compliment for what it is - a compliment :)

Korean culture is not exactly individualistic, meaning people are expected to have a company of sorts or be in a group specially in regular restos. If u go solo, u might be viewed as loser, or weirdo. Resto owners would prefer to serve/sit at least two people for maximizing space and profit. The servings is usually generous enough for at least two people plus u can also get free side dish refills most of the time. It's not all monetary reason though, more on cultural. Even the language reflects a bit of that. (Search the korean word for "WE") But nowadays, going solo is starting to be more accepted.

@kuyaleinad41958 жыл бұрын
It seems baffling but I think Asians just love the combination of Sweet and Salty so they put sugar or pair sweet stuff with salty stuff. Also, it might be because of how these western foods are generally used. Western Foods are not really dishes most people have as a meal. Asians generally eat western food in smaller portions as a snack or perhaps lunch if it's really heavy. Western Foods are never eaten as dinner or breakfast :/ For example, a Grilled cheese Sandwich can be a meal for western people but Asians consider it as a snack. A meal will consist of rice with side dishes.

In most Asian countries, people speak rather backhanded as a form of respect and politeness towards another person. The idea is that when you point something out sometimes it might make the other person uncomfortable especially if you’re just direct about it in front of a bunch of people. So for your sake they just try to be considerate of you and send you an indirect message so that it’s unlikely that any other people will get what you’re trying to say. An example : Instead saying outright that “Your zipper is open.” They’ll whisper to you “zipper” Instead of saying “You don’t smell too good.” They’ll just pass you some deodorant. So yeah most of the time it’s just them being polite. If they’re upset about something and they aren’t direct about it it’s just because it’s their culture to not make a big deal about things and just silently let things go, with a grudge though.

no it's real life. Kdramas reflect a lot of an exaggerated way of korean life so while it is k-dramaland with the dramatics, I am 100% sure that events play out like that over there. if k-dramas were American dramas the plot would be so short cause everyone would directly tell each other why this happened, what she did, how they feel, not keep things hidden, etc etc etc. It wouldn't make sense for it to be that if it wasn't a part of the culture.,
@KaraDep877 жыл бұрын
It's definitely part of the culture... so many things in Kdrama... i see happening in real life... It may be over exaggerated... to an extent (especially criminal dramas)... but the ideas come, from what commonly happens.
@ShreyashiSarkar948 жыл бұрын
After watching about a hundred korean dramas, I really really really wanted to move there (although I knew that was impossible), but now i don't.. There's this counselling show on KBS called "Hello, Counsellor" and there have been so many cases on racism and discrimination on that show that I really don't want to go there now because I know that I will be discriminated upon because of my nationality and my darker skin.. Korean dramas really don't address these issues and always portray the country as a place where the ahjummas are saints in disguise and that is really misleading for people like me..!! :( :(
@meelomellow25908 жыл бұрын
Hallyu Pumba yes you will definitely run into some racists in Korea but so will you anywhere. But don't let it stop you from visiting Korea 😁 Just don't go to find permanent residence there one your first visit like all these other people. Even the amount of Korean English teacher count on KZbin might be enough to take up the whole job field
@upondlite8 жыл бұрын
Hallyu Pumba It's true that the older generation are not as accepting as the younger generation but don't let it stop you from visiting korea! I'm Asian American. I didn't experience any racism but I did have a few bad experiences where bus drivers pushed or grabbed my hand as well as an ahjumma asking me what kind of person from what country I came from after not waiting for gopchang to cook thoroughly (which Koreans don't know when it's ready to eat either). yet I always think about all the friendships I made abroad and all the wonderful stuff I got to see which overrides those negatives. You don't have to reside there permanently. Just go visit and have fun. there's plenty of stuff to do in korea! I'm from America so Korea was quite a thrilling experience.

and I see your icon is d.o! he's actually the main reason I wanted to go study abroad in korea. it has always been a dream of mine to meet d.o. and I finally did. THREE TIMES! I got to see him very up close like just 2-3 feet away. it was amazing and I won't ever forget that.

Seriously..did you watch the recent one about the Uzbek woman wearing her hijab? She literally said some of the things you've mentioned here, about how Korean dramas do not discuss any of the discrimination. Korean dramas are not at all realistic...it belongs in the genre of "fantasy" lol. Yeah, it makes me upset as a korean american though :( and we can say there's discrimination everywhere, but that does not lessen the fact that discrimination does exist in korea.
@annielp23268 жыл бұрын
Never base how a country will be like on television shows and dramas. Of course there is quite of few cultural things you could learn from them, but it's never going to show a very realistic image of how things truly are. It's best that you do research or get hands on experience instead of going off what you see on your TV. Dramas are very exaggerated! And Hello Counselor of course isn't going to give you a very good image of Korea considering people are going on it do resolve issues that at time are very severe cases. Do some exploring and develop your own views on Korea! :) I really think that's that best way to go about it.

I have Korean parents but was raised in the US. I constantly have to explain Korean culture to my non-Korean friends. Koreans are very blunt and direct . . . with other Koreans. It may be that they are at a loss of how to communicate in a culturally sensitive way to Melody. Native Koreans treat me differently because I'm from the U.S. although I speak fluent Korean. When I speak very directly and honestly with them, they are so grateful and ask me a lot about differences in American culture. Koreans do want to save face and not paint themselves in a negative light, but they are not as difficult to read as other Asian cultures such as the Japanese culture - who mostly act that way to not offend nor inconvenience others.

Doesn't brushing your teeth right after eating weaken the enamel? IDK I am really particular about my own teeth and know that brushing right after a meal isn't good
@JellyIsland8 жыл бұрын
Clear from California exactly! I think so too but you know. Usually when you finish a meal here in Korea you have chili flakes between your teeth which is not very charming XD plus a lot of food is quite garlicy ^^ I don't brush though like that. I think a tooth pick and some gum solves most things 😃
@GalaxysDragon8 жыл бұрын
Clear from California I've heard that too! It's best to wait at least 30 minutes after eating to brush your teeth because it'll break down the enamel. Or so that's what I heard... I'm sure there's a few reasons why they do it. Supposed to brush 2-3 times a day but recommended after every meal (they're taking it literally). And I know I wouldn't want to go back to class, work, etc with pesky red pepper flakes all over my teeth.
@JellyIsland8 жыл бұрын
GalaxysDragon Yes around 30 min is what I heard too. Which is even more important if one eats something sour. But somehow their teeth doesn't seem to go bad anyway so I guess they do it the right way XD anyway I never felt like everyone does it or that one must do that to not be viewed as weird or anything ^^ my husband doesn't do that. Just "normal" like 2 times a day. XD FYI hahaha

Korea's racism/pro white skin makes me so insecure. I'm not only dark skinned, I'm not only Chinese (I feel like everyone hates Chinese), I'm a dark skinned Chinese, adopted to a white family. I'd seriously hate if my white family was to be treated better than me just because of my skin color/ethnicity. 27/4-20 Edit: Thank you all for your sweet and encouraging comments! I can gladly tell you I actually visited Korea (China and Japan too) right before the COVID-19 outbreak in the middle of January to early February. I didn't go with my family, but with my (asian) boyfriend so unfortunately I wasn't able to compare the treatment, but the overall experience was very lovely and my first impression was that Koreans are indeed a very nice and helpful people, despite us not speaking Korean! When I talk about racism, colorism and antiblackness in Asia and asian communities I don't refer to single individuals, but a underlying toxic patterns, norms and structures, not maintained by one or two people, but whole of society. And please don't worry, I never had an issue with my skin being darker, I was just worried about others not liking it and therefore risk getting discriminated against. I very much appreciate you all for sharing your own experiences though! That's very sweet and I can reassure you that I have grown a lot more comfortable and confident in myself, my skin and Chinese identity during these past 2 years (since I wrote my original comment). All I want to say is that I care a lot about my community and that includes calling out it's bullshit. It is unfortunately true that countries like Korea, China, Japan and all of Asia struggle a lot with internalized white supremacy. This goes for Asian Westerners as well and I sincerely hope that we will all make an effort to recognize and unlearn it! Lots of love to you guys!
@lynf55626 жыл бұрын
You have to embrace who you are hon and see the beauty inside and out. It's better to have dark skin than being fair even though society says otherwise. Look up the benefits of having melanin and you'll see what I mean.

instead of being insecure embrace it you have so many benefits from being darker. im a dark skin black female and im seventeen i would like to say people wont choose lighter skin over you but they will its happened to me and i live in America you just need appreciate your skin the way you look doesn't make you who you are your personality does it wont be easy but once you do that you cant lose hon. sometimes you need to be a leader and embrace yourself and maybe you can inspire people who feel the same way to love their dark skin as well.

We Filipinos do bring our toothbrushes at work or school. We brush our teeth after every meal because we don't want to offend somebody with our breath if we ate something garlicky or smelly. I think the point is we just have to respect each other cultures and you cannot enforce you're own culture or background when you go to a different country. It's good your moving back to America and it's going to be easier for you because you don't have to adjust to a different culture. Good luck and best wishes.

brushing your teeth regularly is good! However immediately after your meal is not! Give it about an hour after your meal. A lot of stuff inside the food (especially acids) weaken your teeth temporarily. When you start brushing over them in that state it might accumulate a lot of micro-damages over time on teeth and your gums.

Eating food actually changes the acidity of the inside of your mouth and will wear away at the enamel if you brush within a half hour of eating. Most people where I come from will brush once in the morning after waking up, and before going to bed at night, but not at midday, and they don't drag a travel brush and a tube of toothpaste in their purse or back pocket like Koreans do. I'm sure every culture is different, though.

BakaWatashi16 that's disgusting but a tissue isn't always covered in shit
@lauradominguez11448 жыл бұрын
Besides, I prefer a trash can full of dirty tissues and a clean bathroom and toilet, rather than a toilet full of tissues and body fluids or shit which isn't weird but disgusting and useless

I guess you didn't listen to what this girl said on the video. Is because of the piping, even if you use it just one time and throw tissue on the toilet then flush it, can get clogged, and it stays there for a long time until someone repairs it. And people keep going and throwing tissue on the toilet which you can't flush for obvious reasons.

for the being indirect thing, i totally get it. its all about 눈치, which is really hard to explain in english bc there isnt a word for it and it really isnt a big thing in the us. like people will say 눈치없어 which means you dont have 눈치, 눈치 is kinda like taking the hint but not really? it really just exists in korea so its hard to explain and hard to get used to if you didnt grow up in korea, im glad somebody finally mentioned it :)

I'm from Spain and here it's pretty common to brush your teeth after every meal as well. I worked three months in London and I was the only one who brushed my teeth after lunch and they were like why do you do that?????
@alissad.87938 жыл бұрын
Ariadna Barcos In Switzerland you get taught in school to do it so it's considered normal. I hate when I can't brush my teeth after eating and people used to bring tooth brushes and toothpaste to school if they stayed at the cafeteria for lunch.😊

Ariadna Barcos yup we don't do that in France either, but I would like to, I think it's more hygienic !

I swear that brushing your teeth after eating is also a thing(? like I remeber while growing up I would bring my toothbrush and toohpaste to school and brush my teeth after school. Is not just the "not flushing your tissue". why would anyone do that?

Well, I live in The Caribbean, and the people who usually brush their teeth are the ones who wear braces and need to keep it all clean haha.
