Maybe its a mandala effect, bc I was thinking this had something to do with the way they did old portraits, but the new Rhystic Study video had me thinking that all these portrait cards were supposed to be reminiscent of the way they did the portrait of Hurloon Minotaur. Its an iconic card, stoic face turned slightly to the left with a solid color background. I like them.

I kinda like the realistic bird art, the others are a bit of a miss lol. They should have doubled down on the 'photo-real' anthropomorphic portraits.

The word you were looking for at 3:15 was Homogenized. That dom united liliana was such a downgrade to dark mistress lily. Had to skip the dom remastered print of exploration because the art looks stolen from a low effort young adult fantasy fanfic.

google abstract art/abstract realism. large majority of old MTG cards have this art style and it's beloved. (stasis for example which is even more abstract than some of these)

imo the Gorillaz - Dog Days-esque art has run its course, its fine every once in a while but it gets old after a while. I agree that it is inherently lazy, since it's just a profile shot of a character/creature

The profile shot cards are a massive miss for me for two big reasons. If the character is going to be so pulled in, why keep the art so flat and cartoony, and the unsaturated, random, pastel colored backgrounds are obnoxious to look at. Bloomburrow looks really great as a whole though, especially those beautiful water colored pieces.

I'll concede that Kozilek looked super dumb. But those birds are both my taste. I guess that's the thing, it's all about taste and style. I must say though, this is an odd style to have introduced to MTG, but I think it really highlights the commander itself more. Swing and a miss!

LOTR magic is a good example of great and terrible art combinations. Why don't people in the same family have similar skin color? Why aren't the Orcs black. We all know but it breaks the lore and art.

It used to be unique to the artist, and now the artwork looks homogenized and anticipated. Mark Tedin, Quinton Hoover, and Richard Kane Ferguson were the OG masters. Take away the computers bring back the brush! The "Magic" the cards held was the depiction of the meaning of the card within the parameters of the medium.

They are reprinting cards with some booba using new art. Kemba from scars got new artwork. Nirkana's revenant also got new one. But that is not the real problem. Real problem is that new artwork often looks more like cartoon than fantasy world. Faces are so cartoony. Color palatte for character and background is often the same making 1 mess instead of characters popping up. Art often lack details. Compare new phyrexia to one phyrexia. Look at silly constructs in brothers war. Compare that to scars of mirrodin or original mirrodin. Back in the day (hate to say that phrase) artifacts looked like something you wouldn't touch. Now they look like you found them in happy meal at McDonalds.
