Dumb Mistakes I made playing Pokémon as a Kid

I always remember putting the X items as my Pokémon’s held items thinking they automatically raised stated for battles, i only realised they didn’t when in a trainer battle in Pokémon White that i saw the npc use it on the Pokémon

In gen 3 specificity yes thunder punch was good on gardi because back then it was special.

Back in gen 3, I remembered Gastly, Haunter and Gengar were weak to Psychic, so I assumed all ghosts were weak to it. This led to me switching my psychic types into Misdreavus a lot as a kid. I completely disregarded the former 3's poison typing.

Here are some silly things i did as a kid: - i always thought Lucario was a gen 6 Pokèmon due to Korrina's Lucario in the anime - i always thought electric was weak to fire - like many kids, i never used status moves - i always thought the Gracia (the flower that could change Shaymin's form) could be used anytime - i always thought to get rare Pokèmon (like Ralts or Riolu), you had to battle a good chunk of Pokèmon in the route of that rare Pokèmon to prove my wortyness to it - not in the games but after i watched "Steeling the piece of mind" and "Saving the world from ruins" as a kid, i imagined what Riley's team was, it was Lucario, Aggron, Skamory, Mawile, Jirachi and Empoleon...

I remember a few mistakes I made: -not knowing the difference between Special and Normal Attack. Or Special Defense. -CONSTANTLY deleting save files and re-starting when I get bored. I still have an itch to do it but I hold myself back. -Every. Single. Pokemon. Had to be female, I don't know why, I kept resetting my game trying to get a female starter, and there was sometimes I gave up, and deposited the starter in a box, and caught an early route female Pokemon. These are the only ones I remember, or the only ones I did

Here’s a good one. When i was 8y/o playing my pokemon red for the first time, i got stuck in the players house. Why? I thought the ‘exit patch’ at the bottom was a just a doormat. Spend literal hours trying to leave the house, because my dumb 8 y/o brain didnt Connect ‘doormat’ and ‘door’ 🤣

I remember 2 things I did was stupid when I first played Pokemon back in late 2017 1. I basically just caught any Pokemon I saw & never thought about a good team! 2. I threw a master ball at a Granbull!

As Pokemon fan who watched anime first and then played game later I remember in johto journey of ash .In sneasel episode I heard meowth said he can't wait to evolve into sneasel so i thought he had branched evolution like poliwhirl and he wanted to evolve into sneasel rather than Persian

For some reason I used to think Skarmory was a Hoenn pokemon And I also got stuck at that same part in Platinum cause I didn’t know Cyrus was a villain until I looked up how to get hm surf

pokemon ruby. i taught my gyarados the thunderbolt tm and the 3 water hms. i also didnt think to just save scum to get my money back every time i lost to the elite four. i gave up and restarted my save file after running out of money because my poor ahh couldnt do crap without 5000 max potions and full restores

I don't review resetting games as a mistake, I did it all the time as a kid and even most recently when I was 16 or 17. I didn't have access to transfer or storage back then, and gamefreak refused to let you have multiple save slots, so away went one batch of ones and zeroes for another

a mistake I made: When I was in elementary school my friend had a switch and often I came to his house and play let's go pikachu, and we thought if we get out of the game it would save automatically, so whenever we were done who just closed the game without saving (I still remember how many times we fought Koga), now that I am in high school I know my mistakes and I always either save or save state

in black 2 in one of the early routes there is a pokeboll item you cannot pick up normally, just in the winter because of the snow would make a path to the pokeboll, me as a kid thought the atack "thief" could somehow pick up the pokebol, 3 years later i was playing in the winter, i finally undertood

The whole "stat lowers how will I raise it again" I.. convinced my cousin when he was playing one of the mystery dungeon games that stats like "bake in" when you leave a floor so he would waste time finding the reset tile before heading for the stairs lol The starter with HMs... yeah I taught *any* mon i had that could learn an HM the move since I was like "oh they're hidden machines, they're special and must be rare so having more will be good" and so Infernape had like Cut, Rock Smash, Strength, and Rock Climb... Okay mistaking some mons for another regions isn't the worst *because* some just make a line viable (like Budew and Roserade) or are just more common (Skarmory) My mistake tho with a dex is that I thought.. they *didn't* make new sets.. I just was like "oh okay since I know Zubat and Geodude exist in the caves everything must have already existed and we're just doing a remix of things" so it led me to just kinda.. not differentiate gens for a bit until I got tad older (first game was Diamond so not that long) and Gen 5 came out and I realized they straight up made a whole new dex with whole new mons.. and you may question why I would think "they remixed the games" when the anime exists.. I saw very little of the anime and just assumed anything I didn't know just showed up in an episode I didn't see (ie only vaguely knew about Hoenn anime because saw some episodes at friends house and didn't see Sinnoh anime until partway into Diamond-ish) And speaking of Gen 5.. when I heard about hidden abilities I assumed they were like Shiny.. just really really rare (which tbh would have been a *way* better system than "lol use a random online site we shut down now or hope for an event that we don't actually distribute".. or just wait for a post game battle facility item that is way too much work for a single one) but don't worry, it gets worse.. since I was still a kid and only half understood how certain things worked.. I tried my "hidden ability hunt"... in Platinum.. because I knew my computer games updated via the internet and since DS had internet.. I assumed they would churn out an update to things (tbh maybe ahead of my time?/still in the "remix mindset for a bit") The breeding thing! My dumb mistake was.. not leaving the area.. I saved and closed the game and reopened the next day expecting something to have happened while real time passed.. eventually I did leave since I gave up.. and magically one time I was in Solaceon or was using the Poketch and saw the egg.. I was like "wait *now* you did it, I spent days waiting and it only took you like 5 minutes?!" and then just assumed eggs were just extremely rare to get and that's why the gift eggs you got were rarer mons, because even NPCs didn't wanna "waste time" with breeding mons you could already catch... (side note.. used to think the Happiny and Togepi eggs could be a random pool, have no idea why I thought this, was too young for any knowledge of Johto and the weird egg so I just came up with the idea on my own... side side note they should bring that egg thing back, would be cool to spice up a playthrough with a random pool) I got stuck in Diamond mostly.. first was at the start where after beating Roark you have to go back to Jubilife.. I just refused for awhile since "backwards is not progress" and was looking for some kinda exit in the mines or figure out a way past that mud hill.. eventually I did go back when I ran out of options.. only reason had this mindset was because was used to simpler platform games or whatever where he game itself would naturally loop around, not you have to go back yourself.. which funny enough the game does do after Eterna with looping back to Oreburgh with the mud hill.. next up was again with Jubilife, having to surf to Canalave.. I again refused because I already went back once, why would I do it again? Also.. the route you surf on I went the first time and fished, saw some Magikarp, and then was like "okay nothing else here" since couldn't see there was other land to the west Speaking of fishing! Not knowing the different rods meant something.. so I only used the Old Rod since assumed the others would just get a bite faster and I was nervous about missing a bit or whatever.. and thus was confused why all these late game areas had such weird differences between surfing and fishing (or just assuming surf encounters were same as fishing) Last thing got stuck on that I remember was in Hearthome.. I thought Fantina was a fancy tree and tried to use Cut on her... and when that didn't work I just.. thought I was stuck and needed a better Cut or something.. and then when finally realized she was indeed not a tree.. not understanding I couldn't battle her because all the other towns you battle the leader right away... and then Platinum actually didn't let me leave so I was again confused lol

I never made any mistakes playing the Pokémon games-except walking in Caitlin’s house in Undella Town and accepting Cynthia’s not knowing her team was now Lv 76+ rather than 64+ in Platinum and thinking I would win. I came back for revenge after training and out her in her place. Don’t mess with me, the Unova Champion!

I never used hm slaves lol. I took too long to figure out just leaving palette town. Oak wasn’t in the lab and I thought I couldn’t go in the tall grass with no Pokémon lol.

Oh wow I did almost the same as the Celestic Cave thing playing pokemon Y. I got stuck at Geosenge Town because I didn't think to follow Korrina to the right exit and instead was convinced I had to do something with the mystical rocks that the Team Flare grunts were ogling. And I also didn't bother to look it up until I came back years later with a fresh save file. I was so convinced nothing you said would be as dumb as what I did and then it was and I'm now judging you as harshly as I still judge myself. And there are still three minutes left?!

i used to think you used potions by giving it to pokemon (i didn't realise "giving" items just puts it in the pokemon's held item slot)

HMs on permanent party members is convenient & I've always done that, no matter my age, it's only 8 out of 24 moves, it ain't that much especially when Fly, Strength, Waterfall & Surf are really good moves. Same with only using attacking moves (I've beaten BDSP Cynthia that way 3 times).

I started playing Pokémon Blue in 2020, and yes. I did have my fair share of mistakes and misconceptions. - Not much of a misconception, but I knew status moves did something, but I thought the buffs/debuffs were too miniscule to be useful. - I thought that friendship existed in Red/Blue. - I thought cross-gen evolutions existed in the generation the first known species was introduced (e.g. Thinking Blissey and Happiny were in gen 1). - I thought that trade and item evolutions were level-up evolutions. - I didn't know version-exclusives existed, so I would try to find an Oddish... in Blue Version. - I thought legendaries could *only* be caught with a Master Ball. - I thought Vulpix was an evolution of Eevee, despite them being quite far in their regional dex order and that fact that there already is a fire Eeveelution. - One tiny misconception in gen 3 is that whenever I encountered a Whismur, I thought my DS screen had a dead pixel because of a random black pixel on Whismur's sprite. - I thought trainer battles × were only in the earlier generations (for context, I only played the first 4 generations on my first year playing Pokémon games.)

in Pokémon platinum I only trained one Pokémon which was an infernape. And I didn't think to train other Pokémon. Or knew how to restart my game. So I got stuck at the 5th gym leader and never beat him. With a level 65 infernape or something like that. I spent so long training it for nothing lol.

I thought special attack was speed attack. I didn’t understand the difference between physical and special. If my infernape got intimidated I thought my fire blast would do less damage

Okay i definitely did some of these mistakes when i play my first pokemon game pokemon emerald crest yes a hack was my first ever pokemon game i didn't know how to beat roxanne i knew that rock was weak to water but the problem was it was an old version of emerald crest which means roxanne had a mega aerodactyl that was the thing i couldn't get past

well... my first game was pokemon ruby and i was stucked in the first city (after challenging for the first time the rival) because i didn't know where to go also because there was a dude blocking the way before challenging the rival and so didn't discover that i could go that way after defeating the rival, like, years after😅 and also (i don't think in the same game but i'm not sure) not knowing how to evolve kadabra into alakazam i just thought that he needed to go to level 100 to evolve and after arriving to level 100 he did in fact not evolve and it was very dissapointing😅
