Picking Quagsire for Johto does have the side benefit of artificially boosting Sunflora a bit since it'll have the best type coverage against the rival's starter. Macargo and Quagsire can only hit for 2x, but Sunflora would be able to hit for 4x

I feel dorky saying it but; Ground/Poison/Grass, Fighting/Rock/Flying, Fire/Steel/Rock Are not perfect triangles. A perfect type triangle not only resists the type it beats, but also resists itself. Which means Fire/Water/Grass is the ONLY perfect triangle, which is probably why GameFreak never tries to change it. The above triangles are semi-perfect, but they are very solid options regardless.

You’re forgetting about PP Max and moves that refresh PP. there’s also things like Rock Blast, Icicle Spear, etc. that would take out 5 lions, Pokemon that can learn multiple moves that hit all targets like Smeargle and Ditto, Pokémon who use moves like Mimic or Me First, G Max moves which hit 4 targets at once, status things like burn and paralysis, Oranguru who can make a Pokémon attack twice, Mega-Kangaskhan who attacks twice therefore doubling the amount of lions it can kill. Even with game mechanics the Pokémon still win easily

Gen 9 starters are also the most unique because of their absurd evolution methods. Brambleghast requires walking 1000 steps. Armarouge/Ceruledge requires version exclusive items. And Palafin requires you to have friends. 😢
