If the water is dripping onto the z3 seats, it could be dripping from where the top meets the a-pillar. There are rubber plugs at the top corners of the windshield and if you seal them with some silicone (I used black so it's not really noticeable) it might help. Water couldddd also make its way to the seats from where the rear weather stripping ends by each door. I've also heard people put little shims in the stripping over the windows, and gummi pflege helps too. Just a couple of suggestions to try unless it's obvious the top itself is leaking.

Regularly watching your podcasts somewhere in the north of Portugal, in my garage, in front of my half dismantled 94 fiat punto restoration project which I inherited from my grandfather. My E46 was an overnighter when I last let a dealer touch it (although they broke it), was because the valve shims had to be checked when cold so they let it sit overnight, the courtesy car I got beats the Mini, it was a 218d Active Touring auto with the Full M sport pack, purely because they took it as needing a massive car when I asked for a car with reasonable leg room due to being a big guy. As to listening to the Podcast, I listen with my Dog, still hasn't mastered working on cars but I'll get him to keep on listening.

Gareth has the best suggestion, growing up with a Dax Cobra in my life (my dads) and having learned everything I now know from rebuilding it with my dad I can say it’s the best suggestion. Also there’s one for everyone’s budget. From old steel chassis’ and Sierra donor cars to the more modern space frame chassis and jag running gear and from RV8’s up to LS3’s they’re a great car which draw attention everywhere you go. Also if you want to avoid a fibreglass body ‘Alex’ take a look at DB Replicas. David’s design is as close to original as can be without the million pound price tag.

My admission of dumbness:- Once during the 90s I had spent days carefully installing some 'ICE' in my car carefully soldering all the wires creating a loom from the head unit, graphic equalizer and amp, one of these was going to live in my glove box, the last step was to create a hole from the side of my glove box to the center console/dash. As I drilled, the drill bit took a while to get through the glovebox but went straight through the dash and into the carefully crafted loom, grabbed the loom and ripped the lot to shreds.

Just gonna drop mine here, 2 years ago I got a Lexus Sc300 (Toyota Soarer) as my first car. It was like an early 2000s time capsule, it had the wheels, tvs in headrest and clear taillights. I could never get the left taillight to work, so one day I was messing with the wires thinking I could fix it and I shorted the brake light switch out. So now both brake lights didn't work and the car was stuck in park. I drove around for a week by using a flat head to take it out of park and by turning on the lights everytime I had to brake.

With the Z3 it's probably not the roof itself leaking, the rubbers above the windows need to be cleaned and rubbed down with some Gummi pflege, this will give new life to the rubber! Also the bung at the top of the A-pillar shouldn't have any gap around it, so get some glue or silicon and just cover over the bung. Also there is a drainage hole next to the bung in the A-pillar which gets filled with grime so poke a bit of wire down there to clean it out. This solves most leaky issues! Otherwise a new roof is £450 from Croydon soft tops

My dumbest car "fixing" moment happened with a friends problematic Octavia. I can't remember how exactly it transpired (dodgy central locking?) but basically he ended up accidentally locking both of our sets of keys inside his car with the engine running outside of my garage while overheating due to a severe radiator leak and partially blocking the road. If I'd had my keys this would have been fine as we could have gone in and grabbed a nice plastic wedge and mallet to pry the top of the door open with and a long handled grabber to turn the car off and extract the keys in less than 5 mins with minimal stress/damage. Things were already looking bad as the light was rapidly fading when the heavens opened and it started shitting it down. Cue panicked searching of local bins for anything we could find to do the job while directing angry traffic to turn around if they were too big to fit through (basically anything bigger than a 106). We eventually chanced upon an off-cut bit of timber that was sort of a wedge shape, a brick to use as a hammer and a bit of steel re-bar with which to reach into the car. After a brief attempt to get the wedge in the top of the door it quickly became obvious that it was too fat so I went back on the search for something thinner to get the job started and found a crusty, rusted screwdriver which you'd never want to put near your paintwork in a million years but desperate times called for desperate measures. After committing some heinous crimes against paintwork we managed to pry the door frame open just enough to get the wedge in and so my friend started hammering it home. I saw a car coming towards us so walked over to tell them to turn around when the flashing lights came on and two angry policemen piled out and started yelling at us to step away from the car and lie on the ground. So we got on the soaking wet floor and started hurriedly trying to explain the situation while watching the car pissing steam and overheating as the last of the coolant drained out. Eventually after being put in the back seat while the details were checked they decided that we probably weren't trying to steal the car and went on their way without so much as offering to help. Now cold, piss wet through and covered in dirt from the road we managed to finish banging the wedge in and used the re-bar to reach inside and poke the central locking release on the key fob before finally opening the door and turning off the unhappy sounding engine. We popped the bonnet with the traditional scalding of fingers from the steam and let it billow out before pushing the car back up a small hill into a better spot where we could let it cool down. We eventually found the leak which was clearly too big to patch so just temporarily plugged it and filled it with water so it would last the 10 minute driver back to his house where he could keep it until he got a new radiator. Unfortunately the next day when he went to turn it over it sounded awful and wouldn't fire, the oil was basically yoghurt and it soon became obvious that the overheating had either warped and/or cracked the block and it was destined for one final trip to the scrap heap. In hindsight we probably should have just smashed the window but he didn't want to pay for a new one and I didn't want broken glass all over the road behind my garage. If we hadn't wasted 10-15 minutes with the police we probably could have done it in time to stop too much damage but with the amount of times that car had been to pieces I doubt it would have lasted another 6 months anyway.

on the topic of dealerships being nice, last year i was driving my 2005 116i on the motorway and the runflat indicator came on. I was near stevenage and so i pulled off and went straight to a BMW dealer/workshop. I took the keys in, and i expected them to sit me in the corner on my own, but they actually took great care of me, offered me coffee and food etc, took the car round back, found that a bit of corrosion had just broke the seal on the valve. So they cleaned up ALL the wheels and replaced ALL the valves, completely free of charge. When i asked why they were so nice (considering the car is old and worth very little), the guy just turned me around and pointed at a guy standing by the window and said "because hes just blown the head gasket in his X5" and we both laughed (because the cost on mine was so insignificant they might as well do it for free and get the next guy in faster). You can knock bmw but their customer service is outstanding.
