The title Dumb Witness is not referring to the dead client but the dog, who was a silent witness to the goings on in the house.

Re: the older rich person always dying: look at her home life and you see the characters of her life in her books over and over. Her father was the rich patriarch and he died which three their whole family into complete chaos. And with her rich imagination she would probably have come up with many scenarios of how to resolve that "creatively". She was a child and then a young and lively woman approaching the jazz age and I do think she saw herself as part of the younger generation for a long time. Also I have noticed children including myself who are born at the end of a family seem to always see themselves as part of the younger generation because everyone else is always older than you are no matter what age you are. And they always seem to be such old fogies! You can see Archie Christie in many characters; you can see Monty her brother in many characters and you can see her sister and certainly her mother and her grandmother are everywhere. That's my take on her bias.

I totally disagree with you. Its true that Dumb Witness is not one of her most famous books but sometimes its in those silent pieces that we truly eavaluate her master of work. here we can see an ingenuous way of poisoning, that she concealed in a story of magic with the figure of the Misses Tripp and which is quite ingenuous. I dont think the solution is very obvious and the characters are very well constructed. Five stars for me. Other not very famous books where we can appreciate her mind are five little pigs, sad cypress, the hollow and taken at the flood.

One of the best things about doing this project is finding that nearly every Christie title has its passionate readers. This one isn't a personal fav (I think it ended up in the middle of my final ranking?), but I can see how people would love it. And agree that Five Little Pigs is a great Christie! I really enjoyed rediscovering it on this read

The letter had been left in the writing case/blotter and never was posted. After her death, it was found and mailed by the maid or cook.
