The current Fantastic Beasts movies are set in the 1920s - at least 60 - 70 years before the Harry Potter series. Dumbledore defeats Grindelwald in 1945 - 46 years before the setting of the first Harry Potter book. People's deepest desires can change over time. I highly doubt that Dumbledore continued desiring Grindelwald for all those decades. I think by the time Harry got to Hogwarts, Dumbledore would have seen his family in the mirror - his parents, Ariana, even Aberforth, all happy, healthy and reunited. He might have actually seen socks though - maybe he would have seen a family member making them and gifting them to him.

​@@silvaa9414 But the fact that Grindelwald didn't tell Voldemort where it was, is extremely important. I mean, in books it was obvious (at least for me) that this is one of the things that portrays Grindelwald as not completely void of remorse, so so different from Voldemort.

When I saw the movie at that point I was already very dissapointed with the removals and changes, but that pissed me off sooooooo much, grindelwald protecting the memory of someone who was once very important to him, despite the fact that Albus put him there, shows that he understood the wrongs of his past, that he still cared for Albus, and that he was an entirely different "villain" than Voldemort. The new movies, whatever their flaws may be, did a brilliant job of portraying Gellert as a charismatic individual, capable of understanding love, which made him infinitely more dangerous, I mean his people would die for him out of loyalty and admiration, while Voldemort's only follow him out of fear and would never give their life for him, with the exception of crazy ones like Bellatrix and Crouch. Honeslty I love Gellert and I love Depp's interpretation of him, wish the main movies had done him justice, I mean it was ONE scene, come on. Edit: Kinda let myself go on a rant there, xD.

Both probably. I personally think Gellert found Voldemort a more pathetic version of himself. And I do think that even after the three way duel that killed Arianna and 1945 he and Dumbledore still loved eachother. They were the only two people the world that could completely understand and level with the other. I like to think their bond was deeper than the blood pact. And loosing someone that close to you would make you not care if you were dead or alive.

i think dumbledore never stoped loving grindelwald until his death. and im not really sure if grindelwald feelings were mutual. I think it's possible that grindelwald just faked his feelings for Dumbledore so he had him on his side. how j.k. Rowling said. love makes you blind.

I dont think so. In the book, when Voldemort visited him he didnt say the place of Elder Wand and he tried to avoid Voldemort when Voldemort tried to open the grave of Dumbledore. I think he loved Dumbledore too (who doesnt!)

His loyalty was wavering, but it shows how important a figure Dumbledore was and that even Grindelwald's closest followers can have a deep respect for him. They'd be fools to underestimate him.

Even though Dumbledore was manipulative as hell, I feel so bad for him. His life was filled with so much sorrow. Like, seriously, he was alone for the most of the time of his life, and his life wasn't exactly a Christmas. Grindelore is my favourite ship in the whole potterverse 😭

So, in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Dumbledore tells Harry that if he looked in the mirror, he would see a worm pair of socks. But, in Fantastic Beasts, he sees a younger version of himself, with a younger version of Grindelwald. Does that mean he got over Grindelwald by the time Harry was at Hogwarts? Unpopular opinion here but BEFORE anything, just know that I always loved Johnny Depp before this whole custody being. I loved him as an actor and I loved him as a human. Anyways, I don’t think Johnny gave the image that Mads Mikelsen (sorry I misspell his name) and the charisma for Grindelwald. When I saw SOA last week I just saw the character rightfully belong to Mads. That’s all I had to say.
