Dumfries House dates back to the 18th century. It’s set in 2,000 acres of land and Part Of The Prince's Foundation. It’s particularly well known for its amazing collection of Chippendale furniture which you can see in the house.
In 1743 William Crichton-Dalrymple, 5th Earl of Dumfries, retired from the army to his Ayrshire Estate and the Adam brothers, Robert, John and James, to design & build a grand house which was originally called Leifnorris House. The house was completed in 1759 when he changed the name to Dumfries House to reflect his title.
It remained a family home from 1760-1993, until Lady Eileen, Dowager Marchioness of Bute, passed away.
The house was offered for sale in 2007 and purchased by a consortium led by the Prince of Wales. Today it contains some of the most important collections of furniture in the UK
The Prince's Foundation have made huge improvements to the house and estate and is a very important part of the local community providing a wide range of training opportunities for young people and for learning traditional skills and crafts.
It’s a wonderful place to visit that provides local jobs and training opportunities which really has to be the right way forward for beautiful & historic buildings like this.
