I just completed an eight months javascript fullstack bootcamp (Kanzucode bootcamp) and i don't regret it. The eight months included working on a live project and mentorship. Everything you've said about bootcamps is true so thank you Larry!

Just found you and subbed! Been in the process of learning and applying for a year, I take breaks often so I’m not the 6-10 hour a day coder but that allows me to comeback to problems with a fresh mind and not burn out. But hopefully get into tech in the next 6 months🤞🏾

I went to CodeClan, a coding bootcamp here in Scotland and when you talk about interviews around 5.12, we had a week or so preparing us for this and also had a speed networking session because they have a great network of tech companies looking to scale their workforce. I think if a bootcamp doesn't have these things in place, things are going to be tougher BUT even having a good mentor in place (which CodeClan also set up) will help steer you on the right path.

I think the problem I'm facing right now is that I tend to prioritize my friends, family and entertainment(youtube, video games) over my progress. Almost like I'm looking for any excuse to not do the hard work. I feel like the big thing I need to do right now is really sit down and grind out the habit of coding every day and build up to a full 8 hours of focused effort. It feels good when I complete objectives and solve bugs but it feels soo bad when I get stuck. I guess I'm just looking for opinions and feedback.

the key is repetition. I haven't started coding yet but I've been grinding for the past year since I started working a full time job. repeat as much as you can until it happens without thinking. that's the beauty of repetition: you don't even have to think about all the unnecessary stuff and can focus more on the detail oriented tasks and have breakthroughs. it also helps when you have personal interests nearby that can be distracting to allow yourself a stopping point. things become overwhelming when they feel like they're never ending or when you're stuck behind a wall. take a short break and get back at it. getting used to stopping and starting on your own terms will allow you to be able to effectively self start and maintain because you know how much you can really get done before you hit a wall

I'm fortunate to have been accepted on a free 4 month bootcamp here in the UK, currently am half way through. And I can 100% agree, the community is the main thing. The content is great don't get me wrong, but at the end of the day you could learn the stuff they're teaching by yourself, at your own pace. But the community you don't always get when you're learning to code by your own. You could join a Discord channel or a slack, but it's not the same. Great video and great insights.

You're so lucky. I finished one of these free software engineering courses here in the UK and it was the worst course I've ever been on. The level of disorganisation was unbelievable. In addition, our specialism teacher was awful. It was so bad that 3 days before the end of the course the student's anger with the teacher's lack of teaching skills & her sheer disrespect of the students who were struggling bubbled up to the surface. There were ongoing fights between students and the teacher for the last 3 days. I have never seen anything like it. I was not involved in the fights but I did chime in once to show her how rude she had been to those students who had been struggling. I wish I had just done my own learning and not wasted 10 weeks of my life. Additionally, there was no way for the students to meet and have a community, the course provider removed this option. A friend of mine who was on a previous cohort said they had a community space where they met and discussed things daily, so she was surprised that my cohort didn't have the same.

@@hils1015 that sounds so bad!! I'm sorry your experience was like this. I can't say mine is anything like that. The coaches are very professional and have a deep understanding of what they're teaching us, and if they don't they get back to us after they've researched it, (further proving to us students, no one knows everything). We're encouraged to go to events and network with people in person, either events setup by the bootcamp themselves or 3rd party. We have 2 times a week an outside speakers come in to give us real insight to how the inner workings of a tech company/job role looks like. A recent one was during our testing week where a core member from cypress gave a 2 hour talk and presentation. If anyone else is interested have a look into the school of code bootcamp here in the UK. Quite possibly the most intense and exciting thing I've been apart of

All your videos are very useful just because you’re so relatable and we think alike. Though I’m 40 years old, I’m learning from you. I did go to bootcamp and my first salary was $125,000 plus $5,000 signing bonus after I earned 6 technical certs in 108 days

I normally don’t post comments, but wanted to share my appreciation for the consistency of what you share (your content). I started following you a while back because of what you shared on “black tech” and your content gave me the extra push I needed to start my own tech journey. Programming didn’t work out specifically 😂 but I just learned about data analytics and decided to transition to this area of tech. So, just wanted to say thank you and thanks for coming back 🫶🏾

Just discovered this channel, great videos! I agree with the bootcamp experience, I have a friend who just finished her 6 months bootcamp and the description you are giving matches very match hers. Other than learning, you are there for the community, and very often she found herself in a difficult position, perhaps because of a challenging problem, and I think that having peers going through the same process helps you out psychologically. As you say, there are many ways of getting into software engineering, and in many circumstances a bootcamp may be the better choice, be this because of financial availability or time. On the other hand you might not have the time to commit full time to a bootcamp, for instance I got a degree in software engineering whilst juggling part time jobs. This said, I can guarantee that a degree nowadays in our field it is no better than a bootcamp, the material was often outdated and tutors weren't always around to help. Furthermore, In my third year I secured an internship with a small company and the amount of things I learned on the job was much higher than what I had done in 3 years at uni. Would I go back and do a 4 year degree again? Probably not, but I wouldn't go to a 6 months bootcamp either as I feel that the pace is rushed and you don't have the time to retain the material. Nowadays in the UK there are degree like paths, which can last for 2 years. They may be a better alternative if you need time to work, look after family, etc... but at the same time you have the time to really retain the material as the learning is spaced out. As regards the self-learning route, unless you have a background in a STEM or hard discipline I think it would be quite difficult to piece together what to learn, and I think it may leave you with some gaps, not to mention the motivation side of things. To conclude (since this comment is getting already too long), there are other things to consider, such as what field you want to get into, for instance if you are interested into data science or AI a degree would give you the foundation for those things. Ultimately I think it comes down to time, money, personal interests and self-discipline.

We have 2 year programs in the US too. Its called community college. Usually cost between $1-2k per year and you can transfer the credit to a 4 year university or try to start working after. I feel they're not promoted enough so people forget about that option or are just unaware. I'm going to community college for computer science myself while working part time
