Dump Truck vs. Dump Trailer: Which Is BEST For Landscaping?

Having ran with both for years now I'd go with the dump truck. It's so nice to be able to drop a locked equipment trailer and put the truck bed right where it needs to be. Plus loading and unloading tools at a shop adds up to be a crazy waste of time over the span of a year and guarantee someone forgets something crucial.

Great Great video we own both 10 ft 1 ton dually single cab and 2 dump trailers. They all have their purpose. Great advice!

Gret video....Agreed on debt. I believe in zero personal debt and mostly zero business debt as long as 100% depreciation sticks around. We do commercial landscape maintenance and haul mostly mulch and a little topsoil/rock. We have to have heavy pickups anyway so for us dump trailers make sense so we're not registering/insuring and maintaining dump trucks as well. They're definitely not as maneuverable or nimble. I think we're going to try dump bed inserts plus trailers so we can get three or four yards of material into the tight spots. I have the same solar panel and it seems to be working well so far in conjunction with the trickle charger off of the 7 pin. We have tractor trailer loads of mulch shipped to our large sites and then distribute it throughout with the trailers and a small loader.

Dump trailer is great for starting out without equipment to load with. Much lower deck to load brush/wheelbarrows by hand than a dump truck. Plus, when you do buy or rent loaders you already have a means to haul it.

Hey thanks for the video but quick question. The GCWR of dump truck and an equipment trailer would be well over 26k. Even if the dump truck is empty the ratings with the equipment hauling hitched on back wouldn't you need CDL for that recommended setup?

Yes. Careful thought needs to be had about the combination of truck types and trailers

I don’t know I feel like we could have a long conversation about this. Ultimately, it just depends on how much stuff you’re hauling bulk material wise.

Also it would depend on where your work is located sometimes a dump truck is easier in city environments va trailer

Hey Caleb, great video. I run an International single axel on air with an Ampliroll 9ton hooklift system. 33,000GVW. I own a 259D, 303.5E2 & a 306. All loads run legit for weight, even the 306. I interchange my truck bodies. I have bins for my side hustle disposal business and a 17.5' flatdeck. I load everything at essentially ground level. We load green waste into one bin, concrete rubble into another etc. This is being accomplished as I am off picking up and or moving another machine on the deck. Super versatile, efficient and profiable. one truck doing the work of two or more with one to mechanically maintain. I plan to never go back to a dump trailer, or without a hooklift for that matter. What is your experience or thoughts regarding this system, and have you considered this for your future truck upgrade?

I believe he’s trying to stay under cdl so his guys can drive it. Although with having the shop and supplies on hand he might be better off biting the bullet and getting himself a cdl and do some running around during the day while also fulfilling quotes and estimates

Before watching, I’m going to guess… Dump trailer. So you can use the truck for tools, and not worry about them when you need to dump. I was wrong. Basically, either can be great, depends on finances , type of work, and other factors.

I've been using my e350 van for dump runs. Super ignorant. I had 5 tons of old sod in there once 😂. Debating buying a small dump truck with a flat trailer and a skidder, or a pickup with a dump trailer and skidder. The dump truck could tow a lighter trailer allowing for a heavier skid steer to keep me under the CDL limit. But I won't want to daily drive the dump and it'll suck more gas. And the dump truck probably won't haul as much weight as the trailer. Right now just planning to hire a dump truck but that's gonna be $400 minimum charge many times plus any disposal fees. I'm looking at doing more concrete work so I need a beefy machine and ability to move max weight.
