On most of the Optiplex models I have worked with you can JUST fit in a 80mm fan to intake in the front (i super glue them in but you could probably use a drill to screw it in). Makes A LOT of difference on temps.

New i7 8700 builds when new would have more than likely been paired with 1070 or 1080 GPUs. In my opinion an 8700 and 1080 is still a completely usable gaming platform. My play with an Optiplex like that is to find a similar vintage gaming rig real cheap, and swap the i3 or i5 then sell the Optiplex for what I paid for it (normally under $100), and the value of the gaming PC goes way up. In your case, it isn't a bad setup even with the GPU limitations and cooling issues, turned out pretty solid.

The problem with saying that the RX 6400 only loses about 15% performance in a Gen3 slot doesn't really give you an idea of how bad running one in a Gen3 slot can be. Just look at some of the frame rate consistency in your own testing. That's because the RX 6400 just had too many corners cut. Too few PCIe lanes, the constricted memory bus and only having 4GB of RAM are the issue... and it has issues even in a Gen4 slot. Gen3 just compounds those issues since you're now cutting the bandwidth in half. This leads to not just a loss in average frame rate, but more importantly, frame rate consistency. It's not so much an issue with bottlnecking the GPU itself, it's that you're seriously bottlenecking the communication between the video memory and anything that needs to access it. That's not to say it has problems in every game, but it's certainly a minefield I'd rather tell people to avoid. Especially when you don't even have to stick to a single slot card in these systems... at least the 50 and 70 class Optiplex SFF.

You can eliminate the thermal throttling by controlling the fan speed manually by running the fan on 100% speed and removing the lid and that plastic cover.

I was peeping the internals and noticed that the top PCI-E slot was shorter, which yeah means less lanes and a bit of a performance drop, BUT it had a cut in it meaning it could probably take in a longer tongue. Meaning your gpu options could possibly fight that lane cut since you'd be able to do double slot LP GPUs. Maybe, though. Not entirely sure.

PCs like these could be a great sleeper build, the Dell Optiplex looks good, maybe you could try improving the airflow by drilling holes into the case and replace the CPU cooler with something like a stock Intel cooler from Facebook marketplace or eBay.

What you didn't include in the video however is that the best performance upgrade this PC can get (And got as shown in Diablo) is the RTX A2000 which technically performs like an RTX 2060. Great card but hard to find and usually pricey. Awesome find and great video. I can only wish one day I can learn to do quality editing like you. Cheers.

Definitely try to go for a mid tower used pc if you can find it. The limitations on sff builds really kill any performance per dollar. If you can manage to find a 6th gen or later i7, you can pair it with a rx 5700xt for around 150 bucks, the same cost as the 6400.

Looking at this performance wise, it might be better to get an Arc A310 and A380 for cheaper. Those 2 cards are right around 100$/130$ and perform much better than the RX6400 and have AV1 Encoding which the 6400 doesn't even have one. The A380 doesn't get limited by the pcie gen 3 lanes, just activate rebar and boom you're good to go. But either way good video Zach.

Definitely try to avoid Optiplex small form factor PCS. If you can find an EliteDesk instead, they actually put the PCIe slot in a sane place. I built my EliteDesk g2 up with a 3050 6gb lp and it's running great after I cut a hole in the side for GPU cooling and added some tiny 40mm exhaust fans lmao

That PCIE x4 slot will take a double width gpu. You do lose a bit, but likely similar as using gen 4 card in gen 3 slot. A gtx 1650 would pair well or rtx 3050 lp

a score of 116 on steel nomad is not good. i know you are limited by the low tier gpu, but for the value of this system, not bad. my 6 year old laptop with a core i5-9300h and an rtx 2060 mobile gets over 1500 on that benchmark.

A year and a half back, I needed a laptop that I could take to college, but I also wanted it to be able to play games decently, After much research I decided on the Asus Tuf F15, i5(don't remember gen) 8 gb ddr4, GTX 1650, and 144hz refresh rate, But when I went to the store to buy it, They were out of stock, The store recommended me another laptop which was on sale(black Friday) It was Lenovo IdeaPad gaming 3, Ryzen 5 5600H, 8 gb ddr4, RTX 3050, and 120hz refresh rate, it didn't have rgb back-lit keyboard and I couldn't upgrade it to more than 16 gb ram, but it had a better graphics card and also had a camera shutter. So I bought it, I also got a Logitech g402 and a laptop bag with it for free, In the past year tho, I've had to call customer care multiple times to solve problems with the laptop, I've had the ram change once, mic change once, motherboard change twice and the screen change once, Fortunately it was all covered under warranty and the laptop does run smooth, but did I make a mistake buying it?

Very good for low 1080p gaming with a great future upgrades. Just now slapped 5700X into asrock b450m pro 4. 4.7GHZ PBO manual OC, cooled by LC-CC 120mm, single fan tower coller. My GPU is 6950XT. Came from Ryzen 5 1600AF and RX 580 8GB. From 75Hz 1440p 32" monitor to 165Hz 1440p 27". The difference is there. Spent 1050 euro for upgrades. Used cpu and gpu. New power supply, 1TB nvme ssd, 7 arctic P12 fans and a monitor. I will be good for at least 7 years if everything work. Now going to upgrade my router, 4G/5G mobile net is the only option for me unfortunately. Honorable mention to Cherry MP 2000 XXL mouse/keyboard pad. Such a good product. My hand feels great.

the dell, hp, etc prebuilt office pc's sometimes have BIOS/UEFI that limits what cpu/gpu you can shove in them. It's a main reason why folks who want to get a cheap gaming rig should probably avoid buying them. The prebuilt market has tight profit margins, and HP, Dell, etc want to get folks to buy new instead of upgrade old.
