Sardar Satwant Singh, born in 1962 in Agwan Kurd, Gurdaspur, was one of the assassins of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, motivated by Operation Blue Star. He, along with Beant Singh, fired sixteen bullets into Gandhi. Beant Singh was killed during arrest, while Satwant Singh was later sentenced to death. His father, Tarlok Singh, was a farmer, and he married Surinder Kaur in jail on May 2, 1988. Before his execution on January 6, 1989, Satwant Singh expressed no hatred and donated his organs. His lawyer, Bhupinder Singh Sodhi, admired his bravery and determination. Both were hanged in Tihar Jail, and their bodies were not handed over to their families. The ashes were eventually immersed in the river at Hardwar. Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh were the last men executed in Tihar Jail. In 2008, the Akal Takhat declared them martyrs of Sikhism, and their death anniversaries are observed by various political parties and communities.
