Marble, gold, brass, hard woods, leather, fine silks... mostly not fully paid for, and a lot of Mexican workers who weren't fully compensated, too. I used to think this movie was convoluted and confusing, but I kept referencing it to explain stuff to friends after we saw the new Dune. I suppose those intrusive voice overs in Dune ‘84 actually do efficiently get a lot of plot out.
@tbirdparis2 жыл бұрын
Very true. And also, it's not like the whispered voice-overs were a totally contrived idea in the first place. Part of Frank Herbert's writing style for the Dune series includes all of the characters thinking to themselves in internal monologue. Indeed, it was a technique he used in the writing to help get across both exposition of the story and also the deeply complex motivations and secret plans the different characters had. So it made complete sense to use a similar technique in telling the story as a film.

@EternalRoman3 жыл бұрын
Although many things on this video are correct, a lot of them are also completely wrong. 1st: Paul name as Muad'Dib is not the title of the Religious and Political leader of the Fremen. Muad'Dib is his Fremen NAME, along with Usul. The name Usul means "The strength of the base of the pillar", Muad'Dib means "He who makes the way or creates the path or The Teacher of Children" in reference to the Desert Mouse from Arrakis that is in fact called Muad'Dib. The Political and Religious Leader is called the MAHDI, which sounds similar to Muad'Dib, but not really. Mahdi means "The steward of the Desert, The One Who Will Lead Us (The Fremen) to Paradise", his other title is Lisan Al- Gaib "the Voice from the Outer World". 2nd: Paul doesn't have an "adverse" effect to the Water of Life, the water of Life opens his entire Prescience powers. His developed Prescience was incomplete and he was born a generation ahead of his time from the expected schedule the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood wanted him to be born so he could be trained and controlled by the Sisterhood as the male Bene Geseritt or Kwisatz Haderach, the one that would possess both Male and Female Genetic Memories since Bene Gesserits only possess and can access female Genetic Memories. All this was so that the Sisterhood had control of the Landsraad and the Empire of the known universe. The breeding of Paul was prepared by the Sisterhood, But Jessica who was a Bene Gesserit birthed him ahead of time against the Sisterhood's orders and plans, so even though his powers were developing, his time on Arrakis and exposure to the Spice advanced his development but the Water of Life unlocked his full Prescience powers. He was the one Male that was able to do this because all other males that tried taking the Water of Life died, but him being the Kwisatz Haderach was able to survive.

Lynch's version feels more like mysterious artistic movie, where atmosphere is heavy build with fantastic soundtrack (Brian Eno, Toto), and artistic quality visuals, which was also supported by great casting. Apart to this, 2021 version feels like modern realistic war movie from Iraq, with great fantastic foto realistic VFX, with modern "striking - fighting - ethnic" soundtrack, but somehow completely lack mystery, dreamy atmosphere, and artistic feel from original one. Obviously they targeted more to mainstream audience, as 84 version was not properly "recognize" in time when was released, only later one became cult movie.

The "weirding modules" are certainly not the biggest or most "criminal" deviation from the book. They're just a bit superfluous. The biggest deviation is turning Paul from a gifted guy making use of BG propaganda and worrying about djihad into an actual Messiah-like figure fulfilling genuine prophecy.
@Timelord200110 ай бұрын
I disagree about the weirding modules and the 3rd stage navigators. First the lesser objection; the navigators. I get that their appearance in David Lynch's film isn't all that pleasing...but they weren't supposed to be. The point was to show how far 4,000 years of forced spice rapid evolution had moved them from traditional humanity. In the novel and other screen versions, they seem *too* humanoid. I for one am glad Lynch took a more bold approach, even if it wouldn't win any beauty contests. It shows how humanity had become at least a little less superficial. Now for the major objection; the weirding modules. Not only do I agree that the battles weren't really a good idea to have with martial arts just due to the look and how difficult it'd be to fight ankle-deep in sand, but much more importantly, because it would fail to make sufficient sense of how the Fremen could finally free themselves of Harkonnen and Corrino oppression; especially from the Harkonnens. But the weirding modules *do* answer this dilemma, honestly, in my opinion, better than even the great one himself, Frank Herbert, did in his novel! I will explain. No other production of DUNE has the weirding modules, and some would say they were an FX gimmick, but they're wrong. They were very much needed to resolve an otherwise sticky point about the Fremen. How is it that the best hand-to-hand fighters in the universe -- better than even the Sardaukar and *far* better than the Harkonnens -- were held down and oppressed for so long by House Harkonnen, until their messiah came along? If the excuse is supposed to be it's because they were scattered and ununited, I ask why was *that* the case? We can quibble about how those of the North and South didn't trust each other fully, or similarly juxtapose the city-swelling Fremen with their desert-dwelling counterparts. But that just doesn't hold up, because the sheer brutality of the Harkonnens would've long-ago caused the Fremen tribes to unite, -- probably under Stilgar -- despite these far-lesser issues / differences, and throw off their shared oppressors. So why didn't it happen until the coming of Paul Maud'dib? The answer, it seems clear enough, has to be technology. Until the messiah came to them, the Fremen's best weapons were knives made from worm teeth that can sometimes break, -- hence the Fremen curse, "May thy knife chip and shatter" -- and their emblem of adulthood, the maula pistol...a spring-actuated dart gun! Meanwhile, House Harkonnen had air power to drop bombs, body shields (which were only a problem in the open desert sands where they might not work and would drive the worms into frenzy if they did work, but which would work just fine in cities), lasguns, and other forms of high technology. Think about why the Emperor was afraid, not only of Duke Leto's rising popularity, but also of the new secret army House Atreides was building. It represented a genuine military threat, because the technology was new, potent, and even worse, not well understood by anyone outside the House. And it turned out the Emperor's fears were correct! The weirding modules allowed domination on the battlefield, even over the Sardaukar, despite the technological advantage they'd heretofore enjoyed over the Fremen. I say, then, this is *no* FX gimmick! You *have* to have the superior technological advantage this films' version of the weirding way represented. Otherwise, even with Paul's prescient vision, his revolution may well have failed. Other than that, I agree with everything else in this video. Thank You, and Good Job! 👍

Love this movie. Lynch is genius. Sadly we will never see his full vision. I don’t really care that it is not true to the book. As a film it looks stunning to this day (except few things) actors are amazing and it is not just a soap opera b movie. It is a really underrated

The ridiculous snobbery over the 1984 David Lynch film is overdone. It's a marvellous film. Cast and visuals and effects are top notch. I can watch it over and over. David Lynchs vision is exceptional and beautifully done. I've also seen the new Villneuve version and it's brilliantly done. So I now have 2 great films to enjoy and Villneuves 2nd film to come. Life is grand.

The Original movie is pretty bad because the studio forced Lynch to cut so much & change the placement of scenes but the version free on KZbin is far better & closer to Lynch's original vision & to the books.

My one hope is that use of the Bene Gesserit Voice doesn't make a character sound like he/she is demon possessed.

I love the book but I'm never sure how to feel about this movie. I love the sci fi adaptation in the year 2000. Great stuff there for sure. I still have to see the sequel. The 2003 TV series about the son of Paul, Leto II. Thanks again. Love your channel.

I bet this is the movie that Lynch did that convinced Lynch to have Kyle as his friend and good luck charm.

This was Kyle MacLachlan's first movie. Up to that point he had been a stage actor. Fun fact: David Lynch has a walk-on in this movie. He's one of the spice miners.

I don't believe that it's possible for any director to adequately surmise this outstanding story within a 2 hour norm allotted film. Although looking forward to seeing the next iteration, I am not enthusiastic about it being a decent rendition of the books either. Also I can't help but to mirror the state of the world of today's political arena with the Baron's "plan".

I already think the best adaptation, even with its differences, is the 2000s TV miniseries, and knowing that Disney's hand is behind this new Dune movie, I'm ready to be disappointed. But what really scares me the most today is Asimov's Foundation series produced by Apple.

Agreed. In one fail swoop Hollywood said let's destroy every major classic fantasy and sci fi story ever. Wheel of Time, Dune, Foundation and Lord of the Rings.

@phenrilwolf3 жыл бұрын
@@justonjenkins1589 Maybe my problem is that I know both original works quite well, and watching the trailers is enough for me to know if I will like them or not, and from what i have seen, for Dune they rely on famous names and CGI, which not always is a guarantee of a good adaptation, not to mention Disney ruined Star Wars, and for Foundation they created three new characters that doesn't exist in Asimov's original work, which already shows that they will not faithfully respect it. Hype is not enough for me.

As for the Lynch version vs this new one, I vote Lynch. His version is better and the changes he made are great in my opinion. Especially going against the anti religion angle Herbert has. I also like that it's one movie so you don't have to have the lame hype routine the popcorn eaters have to go through. Or waiting two years for a sequel. The new one is trying to compete with Lynch more than make a faithful adaptation. It's got terrible casting choices and blinding cgi day shots. Give me 80's cult classic let the kids have the woke-ified inferiority complex version.

Sorry, but taking the nostalgia goggles off, the 2021 film is far superior. More faithful to the book and its lore, more serious, and being split into two films means it will have the time to tell the story it needs to. It's not "boring", it's a slow burn that doesn't rush things. It's not "dull", it just isn't focused on being shocking and ridiculously grotesque. The 1984 film is entertaining. But let's not pretend it's a great adaptation, or a great film.
