Dune 2000 - House Ordos - Three Great Armies in Ruin

Combined Mission Briefing of House Ordos in the computer Game 2000. Perrsonally I found this my favorite faction in this game. The Atreides are just .. well .. offensive to my tastes. The Harkonnen are .. too cliché to be taken seriously and in the case of the Ordos, the idea of a Cyborg Mentat .. sounds just .. interesting.

I owned this game back in the day. That...is a pleasant memory. I played all three Houses. I found Ordos to be the most intriguing. That...is truth. I enjoy seeing these cutscreens again, and especially Edric O. They take me back. That...is reminiscence. If you have not played House Ordos yet, do so! THAT...is both advice, and....the mission!

I find it interesting that these strategy game scenes start with the player being the target of skepticism, distrust, pressure, contempt etc. in its "function". As quests pass (successfully) and you show your "worth" to the House, this treatment changes, members are more transparent with us and occasionally you are praised and rewarded. The difficulty and complexity of quests increases, of course, but with luck this dynamic can even motivate you more to make your House victorious.

There were some interesting twists and turns as well, not just a clear linear rise through the ranks - Command & Conquer 1's NOD campaign being a famous example where your superior grows jealous of your success and tries to send you off on suicide missions, until his superior steps in and puts an end to that.

Based on the fact this ending had Elara poison the emperor and the recap at the start of Emperor: Battle for Dune told that the Emperor was poisoned (with the same video used for the recap as in the ending here, although in that video no saboteur was shown), it would seem the Ordos won this war.

There are amazing ideas behind these cutscenes. I totally agree with the uploader and their description - the Atreides were meh and Harkonnen were too cliché. But the Ordos... The story is decent, the script is ridiculously awesome ("They are unreliable. They come and go. When the casualty count grows high, they WILL go....but the spice will flow.") and the staging is really interesting, like the images of what Edric O is currently talking about in the background. Wish there was more on this particular Mentat, even though he is not canon in terms of the book.

It's possible, in 1999 or whenever Dune 2000 was released, the idea of cyborgs was already well established. He could be part human as Edric O says he is Ixian technology, not just a machine. In the books, there are cyborgs of Ixian origins, so perhaps Edric O is just that.

I forgot to mention, Elara in the other victory videos apparently died in the ensuing explosion caused by the houses' attacks. Here, she seemed to have escaped. There's also the fact that the Executrix of Emperor: Battle for Dune, were supposedly the masterminds of a takeover of house Ordos, making them the new leaders of the house. This action would explain the instability that would have led Dune to be left without a coherent force. Why you ask? Because the Ordos weren't as organized and cohesive as the other houses due to their mercenary and mercantile nature. Meaning the forces employed to keep Arrakis would desert and leave when no more money came their way during the disorder in the house. This is my theory of how Arrakis came to be the location of the War of Assassins during Emperor: Battle for Dune. It would coincide with the fact that the Fremen leader during one of the Atreides cut-scenes bitterly commented that their fathers spilled their water/blood for house Atreides and gained nothing.

Old necromancy to be commenting to a comment made 6 years ago but I'd assume maybe Eldric-O was something like a thinking machine rather than a mentat. Likely the power went to his head and they had to annihilate him, then when the dust was settled they split the power between a new invention: the Executrix, which was basically group-thinking humans but amplified by machines, but while one Executrix might go high on power or spice the others keep them in check. Likely they had to remove the machine influence as well

But one of thé most useful pieces of advice he gives you is in the Mission-8 briefing: 'Avoid the Death Hand'... erhm,, Derp? How to Avoid an incoming missile? The only way to avoid it, is attacking the Harkonnen base ASAP, and destroy their Palace, which.. is a costly endeavour, if you consider you have the Atreides, ánd (a smaller contignent of)the Imperial forces opposing you as well: You'll háve to weaken thém a bit atleast, or they'll raze your base down before you even réach the Harkonnen installations... Still think the Mission-9 briefing is one of the best in RTS games thus far "We see the whole of it!, Three Great Army's in Ruin...The Padishah Emperor camps between the Baron and the Duke, but he is weak, and hate will be strong! We see our mercenaries are restless, they would just as soon kill us as kill fór us, We must be prepared to slaughter our own! We see Atreides attacking the Fremen! Knowing that the Death Hand missile flies up off the map and then straight back down in alignment with where it's going to hit, I'd scroll my cursor down ahead of its path when I saw it pop in from the top of the map. I'd then move any units that were in its path out of its way. If the missile detonated over a building and it looked like the building was going to be destroyed, I'd immediately sell it. The munitions would then hit the structure while it's in the process of being sold, but since buildings that are being sold are indestructible, all that would happen is I'd get some funds back and some infantry. Splash damage could be repaired, and the building in question could just be rebuilt. If it's the construction yard that gets hit, then I just let it get hit and repair it as soon as it takes damage, since I know the Death Hand missile can't kill it by itself (provided the construction yard is at full health).

I loved playing as the Ordos, it was definitely the most challenging House to play as on Hard difficulty. Their missions were the most challenging, and the most complex, having mercenary allies on many maps that you need to protect. The Deviator always sucked lol, I didn't really like it. The stealth trike raiders and Saboteurs were the best part of the Ordos.

Deviators require more micro managing, but they were great against slow units like devastators or siege tanks. And you could use them against enemy harvesters to get more spice while blocking their income.

Yea, the Stealth Raiders were a real pest. You could easily uncover the entire terrain & pick up tons of crates, thus, getting huge amounts of cash. Deviators are most excellent if there are moar then 1 enemy: if you destroy everything and deviate the rest of the enemy vehicles, they will _permanently_ belong to you!!! (of course, if an enemy Deviator deviates them, they'll permanently revert to that side as well)

Rohan Zener The Atredies mentats probably were reassigned to certain positions or given other objectives. Either that or they were simply replaced. Except for Hawat. He killed himself since Harkonnen tried to get him to kill Paul Atredies, and so he didn't want to do it so he killed himself instead.

Hayt was indeed tortured to death, but he was just a ghola of Piter anyway. :p Yanich was probably killed since the Atredies swarmed Geidi Prime. My guess is neither end is canon. More like the war just went back and forth. But it uses elara killing the emperor but without the ordos winning. Both ordos and harkonnen were seen with their disgraced commanders (not the players) about lost territories

Landsknecht 86 Its based on the book, where the Atreides were put in charge of mining spice on Arrakis and were put on after many years of stewardship of Arrakis by the Harkonnens. If you read the backstory of Dune, the Emperor was scared of Duke Leto Atreides as he was very popular and his army was well trained and a threat to the throne. So what happens is he colludes with the Harkonnens (using the age old conflict between these houses) to stage a coup and remove the Atreides from power. The Emperors Sardaukar troops are disguised as Harkonnens as he cannot openly attack Atreides as they are popular in the Laansraad (a council of all the houses in the universe). The emperors army is very strong but a combined assault by all houses could remove him (this is stated in the books). So to answer your question it was a trap and this is what happens in the game (except there is no Ordos in the book) and the emperor sides with one of the houses to remove another. Also remember "the house which controls the spice controls the universe". Don't ask me why the emperor doesnt mine it himself, maybe he just sees is as a way of maintaining a peace, its been a while since Ive read the books.

In the Game, three Houses are engaged in this War of Assassins for the control of Dune, but they can only fight on Dune - its one of the rules of engagement. The Guild, Bene Gesserit, Tleilaxu and Ix act as arbiters of the conflict, trying to support or submine their favorites. Again, this is what happens in the game. In the books, War of Assassins happens only between House Atreides and House Harkkonnen, but is not limited to Dune. Also, unofficially, the Emperor, head of House Corrino, helps the Harkkonnens, by supplying them with Sardaukar troops, the deadliest fighters in the Imperium. Later, between 1st and 2nd book, The Empire actually goes to war, or rather Jihad, when fremen legions of Paul Muad'dib conquer basically every single planet in the Empire(a million planets), eliminating all opposition and installing the religion of Muad'dib as law.

+Peter Van The Emperor doesn't mine the spice because The Guild, Bene Gesserit and the Landsraad are all against it. If he would be allowed to do so, he would control the only source of melange (read oil, or electric power) ergo control the Universe - which happens at end of 1st book through Paul. CHOAM actually has the rights to mine the spice, they do all the trading in the Empire. Emperor and everyone else are like shareholders. Is stated that by the events in 1st book, Emperor and his allies control 56% of CHOAM shares, giving him majority control, so he has a saying in distributing the CHOAM directorships (like a CEO office) also he can appoint who mines the spice on Arrakis. Is not because he's the Emperor, its because he has majority control in CHOAM. That's one of the reasons "Dune" is a true masterpiece, unrivaled in sophistication. Economics, religion, ecology, sciences, all intertwined magnificently.
