A breakdown of the latest news including all the recent comments from production staff and examine whether the prospect of Dune 3 is a realistic expectation. Both before and during the highly anticipated release of Dune Part 2 cast and crew along with industry insiders were discussing the prospect of Dune 3, referring to it as though it was already a sure thing. However in the weeks following its release there has been no confirmation of a third installment. Not only that but recent comments from Legendary and Dune director Denis Villeneuve have cast a shadow of doubt over whether or not an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sequel novel Dune: Messiah will see the light of day.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: DUNE 3/DUNE: MESSIAH has been CONFIRMED to be in DEVELOPMENT by Legendary Pictures. HOWEVER, this simply means that they're working on the script/screenplay, which has been widely reported on for several months. The next BIG ANNOUNCEMENT we are looking forward to is when PRODUCTION is greenlit. 🤞

If we don't get Denis Villeneuve's Dune 3, it will literally be a crime against humanity. Not when Marvel and Star Wars get to keep churning out their drivel and Godzilla and Kong dominates the box office... It wouldn't be a horrible thing to wait for the 3rd movie. Dune Messiah takes place 12 years after the ending of Dune. I've heard elsewhere that Denis has plans for directing another film before going back to the Dune Universe. He's working on the screenplay as this video stated and the composer is working on the music already too. Other actors have said basically "Let me know when and where and I will be there". This video makes it sound so pessimistic that Dune 3 won't happen. I'm very confident it will. It might be later than people want but it will happen.

Dennis has also said in interviews that, if DUNE Messiah goes forward, he wants to take a few years off to work on other projects, which will also give the cast time to "age up", so that they can come at the story fresh/revitalized and be able to appropriately portray their characters after the time jump in the story. Messiah is supposed to take place twelve (12) years after the end of DUNE Pt 2. Which means, if they adhere to that framing, Paul will need some significant " Adulting" before they start filming. If they want to cut down the time between films, they could recast, but I personally don't foresee that option working well. They could also reframe the story to take place, say, 5-6 years later, but that would also cause issues with the timing of certain events. Not least of which would be the age of Paul's sister, Alia.

I wouldn't worry. DV has always stated, that before returning to Arrakis for Part 3, he would do at least one movie unrelated to Dune. Also, he wanted Paul to become a little older as "Messiah" plays 10 years after his ascension. And casting superstar Anya Taylor-Joy for just a 5 second scene in DP2 would a be a collossal waste, should there be no further plans for her playing Alia. I think he needs time to come up with a good script after he (kind-of) wrote himself into a corner with changing Chani. And he needs to come up with a guild navigator look that tops that of David Lynch, which is next to impossible...😄

But if this is the issue that clouds his mind about the sequels, I think he is wrong. SPOILERS Starting with the Dune Messiah, the terraforming of Arrakis is completed in time. In the Messiah, the planet slowly begins to green and irrigate. In Children of Dune and especially in God Emperor of Dune, the planet has been completely transformed and is almost a lush water planet. Even though the 5th book and afterwards the events are reversed again, the 2-3 films to be shot after that can be shot in very spacious environments to a certain extent. I wonder if the current silence is a sign that Legendary are having a deep think about how they are going to adapt Dune Messiah, given that Denis Villeneuve went way off track with this ending of Dune Part Two. I haven't seen the film and have had to rely on synopses from elsewhere, but two facts stand out quite clearly. One is that the Jihad that Paul had been trying to prevent has two very different origins. In the books, it is the Fremen who head offworld to convert the rest of the known universe to the religion of Muad'Dib, by sword if required, whereas in the film, it is the rejection of the Great Houses of the Landsraad of Paul's claim to the throne that starts it. Thus, Paul goes from being a helpless pawn of extreme religious zeal to someone leading a war to force people to accept his rule. The other stark difference is one that may cause the most headaches... and that is how Chani has been portrayed. This is where the modern view of women may have tripped DV up. In the book, it is made quite clear that Chani fully understands her role and place in Paul's life, especially once he becomes Emperor. She also understands that Paul's marriage to Irulan is one of pure convenience, and exists in name only. Paul even asks her to enter negotiations alongside his mother on his behalf. There is no schism between them, no separation, which makes what happens in Dune Messiah all the more intense. DV had Chani storm out at the end of Dune Part Two, which, whilst this is the expected reaction of a modern woman, kind of wrecks the delicate weave of politics being set up in the books. Much of what happens in Dune Messiah hinges on the political manipulations and schemes of various factions, some of which focus on Chani and her role as Paul's mate. By having her becoming estranged from him, DV has sent a wrecking ball through a significant part of this book... and it's going to be difficult to adapt without either spending much unnecessary time having them reunite, or else just 'forget' the estrangement ever happened.

It’s not fair that Dune Messiah’s fate should be at the mercy of a spinoff show that not only nobody asked for but is currently in development hell. It’s like WB is setting the franchise up to fail by making it a bigger franchise than it is just on film. As much as I'd love to see it, a lot of people in the industry just have huge dollar signs in their eyes now and will have no problem releasing something super subpar because it will still make tons of money. Also don't even get me started on how much I disliked Zendaya's Chani and per the final shot of Pt 2 we would see a whole lot more of her and a lot of the nuance of her character from the book will be stripped away into a spiteful, aggressive, "strong" girlboss who don't need no Paul. 😒

JJ Abrams loves to create mystery boxes with no plans on how to solve them, much less solve them with satisfaction. This is partly why Rian Johnson threw out what JJ set up, which just created more problems, on top of what Rian did to all the characters and lore. JJ basically just ripped off "A New Hope" with shiny new special effects, inserted mystery box garbage, and hoped no one would notice. Hollywood is almost entirely devoid of creativity and talent.

Sadly the ending of part two was wrong to start Messiah. It was so easy the have another ending where you can express Chani's discontent but not make it look like she's leaving, because she wasn't. What would have done was Chani looking down to a square and see fremen kill another fremen for not accepting Paul as the Lisan al Gaib. That way you would also have the impact of her doubt but also a reason why she would stay, because leaving might get her killed also. That is how you create impact.

That ending was really bad. The performance by Zendeya in those final shots kind of ruined the whole film for me. If DV was going for a strong but slighted women, then Zendeya is not the right actor, regardless of her performance. Instead of showing a stoic resolve, as per the novel, she looked and behaved like a petulant schoolgirl. Despite her poor performance - I lay equal blame with DV for this - it could have been so easily fixed in the edit, and remained more faithful to the book. I am intrigued how DV will adapt and re-imagine Channi and Paul's relationship? Because, as it stands, it's so wildly different to the source, that it will require a huge 180 of Channi's attitude to Paul, whilst trying not to make her look more infantile than she already does.

I've seen several sources painting this as some unexpected news of unexplained sudden hesitation, which seems bizarre to me, as for anyone following the production more closely over the past couple years, especially interviews of Villeneuve, it's been pretty damn clear that there would likely be an actual break between the productions of Part Two and Messiah, for numerous and good reasons (some of which you already bring up in this video). People need to chill and re-read some books and rewatch the two incredible Dune movies we've gotten so far xD Let Denis Villeneuve cook. I'd rather wait till 2030 if it means he gets to do Messiah on his terms. It's actually a blessing that the studio isn't pressuring to bank on the momentum and making hasty announcements. ...but yeah, the only part here I'm worried about is about the potential for that Max show shitting on the IP in some way, but who knows. I hope it surprises us in good ways or something.

Personally I feel conflicted about it. On one hand I want to see more of these high concept movies that require the viewers to focus and not treat them like a bunch of idiots. On the other I feel that 2nd movie didn't do justice to the book. There are so many omissions and changes in it It's making the whole story too flat. I understand that characters in movie have more personality (I would dare say more of it visible) but at the same time they are not as nuanced as the book does. Additionally some elements are straight out weird or don't make sense when comparing it to the book. Time compression is one of these elements. Lack of Paul and Chani's childs death also takes the edge from it all.

They'd have to cut swaths of content to fit that into one movie, of course, but they'd also need to have Chani perform a 180 and get back together with Paul, reconcile their differences about him betraying her ideals, and want to have his children and heirs.

They're going to make a 3rd movie, no doubt about it. Any disparaging whispers from industry insiders are just publicity/a plot for increased budget. The 2nd film laid so much groundwork for a 3rd movie, if there was no pay off for any of that it would be a huge waste of money. The reveal of Anya Taylor Joy as Alia for example. If they don't use her in a future movie, that scene was a total waste of time. Or the fact that Paul and Chani haven't officially reunited romantically (they were together throughout the ending of the book, so the conflict and relationship drama in the movie is all just fodder for continued intrigue). If they didn't make a 3rd movie it would be a colossal waste of money, not to mention they'd be throwing away the enormous profit they'd be practically guaranteed to make on a third installment. And mark my words, it will be within the next few years. They have to make it soon or Jason Mamoa and Anya Taylor Joy will be too old (shes already too old. So she'd be WAY too old).

I’m wishing with all my heart for Dune Messiah the movie, but totally agree with Legendary’s approach. The script would need to be superb and the cast, crew and everyone involved must be top notch if we they want to finish the series with the same or better quality as the first two movies. The worst sin would not be not having this movie. The worst sin would be this movie not fulfilling expectations and being the very best it could be. Two more things: 1) Denis Villeneuve always said that he was going to do other projects before “returning to Arrakis”, and 2) he’s always been a very strategic and careful movie maker. He hasn’t changed his position about Dune Messiah. He’s politely telling us he won’t be rushed into making the third movie, and he will only make the film he wants to make and when things are completely ready. Let Denis Villeneuve work at his own pace and do his magic. The problem for the Dune universe is that the first novel is by far the best from a story telling standpoint. The rest of the first trilogy gets progressively darker and more complex in a way that is difficult to show visually. Still doable through Children of Dune though. After Children the story becomes more and more abstract and nihilistic so it has a very limited audience even if you find a way to do it in a visual format. Previously untold stories that are hinted at by the books have a much better chance of becoming good movies (which are often not the same as good books).

Dune Part II currently sits at $628 million dollars worldwide. Using the usual X3 equation to assess profitability, it sits slightly north of their break even point. Sure it is slowing down since it has been out for four weeks so let’s say it lands on $700 to $750 million worldwide, and then a bit more in PPV, licensing, etc. That’s a good but humble profit. But there is something else that I think needs to be taken into account when deciding whether to do a third movie. Dune is quickly taking a spot in the culture that is currently vacant. Despite it’s meager returns, there seems to be a groundswell of new fans that had never heard of, known about or understood Dune’s influential place in sci-fi . Before the movies, and particularly before Part II, people had no clue about who Paul Atreides was, what Frank Herbert’s saga did for sci fi writ large and in general, how much upside the franchise has in a market place where juggernauts like Star Wars and Marvel are in steep decline. In business, everything is a gamble, but if Legendary doesn’t see the upside in taking the saga all the way to God Emperor then they lack vision.

I believe the word "Messiah" could be a problem for some. It may need a new title like, "Dune: Land of Rainbows and Unicorns" so modern audiences can understand what and why Paul feels the need to rule the empire. After the deletions of characters, storylines, change in the timeline, 180° shift in characters, and otherwise condensing the story to prevent a 3 or more hour movie, I can't see how Dune gets back on track with the storyline. I would've HAPPILY sat in the theater for 3hrs and 15 minutes or more for a story if it remained closer to the book and, then I would've GLADLY gone back to watch it again and possibly a 3rd time. Seriously. But, as is, I walked out of the theater pissed off with the obvious chopping up of the story and changing Chani's characeter. I acknowledge that part 2 was an amazing movie. Its visuals and music are AMAZING. But for those of us that know the story, it left A LOT on the floor.

Dune 2 diverges from the book with some of the character arcs that will necessitate the re-working of Dune Messiah. Aside from that, I wish David Lynch could be convinced to create the final edit of his Dune as he intended. I would have liked to have seen that one. Fluffboy, Zenboreya, Bardem and the others are in demand and it may be a problem rounding them up (if) anywhere before 2025. Another factor is that its widely assumed Zazzy is going to sell part or all of Warners, and Legendary (which is owned by the very conservative Chinese) may be waiting to see if the new owners want to snort more spice. They're more likely to greenlight Kong x Godzilla x Sidney Sweenie and her chest cannons first and wait to see what happens with Warners.

It's the shortest book in the series, definitely possible in a single movie. It's arguably the worst book though, not sure it needs to be converted to the big screen.

Denis believes he can adapt it in one movie and I think so too. It just might be longer closer to 3 hours or longer. My guess at least

As the book is written, it can be done easily in 1 film. With the changes to the characters and lore from Dune part 2 (which will require explanations and scenes that weren't in the book, to undo the damage), and with Hollywood's penchant for inserting action into book adaptations that don't have it (like Dune Messiah), who knows.

I was looking at Dune 2 costs and spending 190M on a film with a large awesome cast, so much work needed and a rather long runtime is a pretty efficient use of money and a testament to Villeneuve's direction, inner mind vision and organization. The film has not only broken even but seems it will be a financial success for all involved. I would be surprised if they don't come back for more.

I don't understand what's going on with the studios because Dune was doing better around here in it's last week than it had in its second week and for some reason it vanished out of the Birmingham Alabama area suddenly to be replaced by Ghostbusters and Godzilla

Palace intrigue and royal Court politics rare translate well into box office success. Messiah doesn't have the action that Dune has, except the stone burner

I think Apple is doing a good job with adapting the "talking head" story of Foundation and making it entertaining to watch. It's not a perfect interpretation but it's better than watching people talk to one another in a room for hours on end, I'll just listen to the audiobooks again for that. Maybe they can take the lessons learned from that and do a proper Dune story from Dune to God Emperor!

Mary Parent greenlit Serenity while she was at Universal and it underperformed. I'm guessing she's a bit cautious about Sci-fi properties that have a lot of fan hubub.

I kinda feel like themes in Dune, and the later books, conflict with ideas that have been pushed in hollywood lately. I was surprised to see that Dune was as unadulterated as it was, and I wonder if ideology is preventing DM, CoD, and GEoD from being made. I could Amazon pulling another Rings of Power in the "Dune Universe."

The hesitation to put wheels in motion on Dune Messiah is actually some of the best news we could hear right now. It’s going to be an exceptionally challenging film to get across to viewers, so if they are taking it seriously and not rushing something out just based on momentum, there’s a good chance they’re going to do the source material justice.

The director stated he’s almost written the script, so in time he’ll probably film it. He wanted to have a break due to the amount of work Dune 1 and 2 required. I keep my fingers crossed 🤞🏼

Not concerned. There will be a Dune 3, as there is plenty of demand for it. Denis wants to make a better film than Dune 2? He is capable of doing so. It'll take time to write an excellent script, but he is smart enough and creative enough to do so

How surprising, well, not, really. Its always about the money first, and than comes the stamina of the director and actors involved with such a long term project. Thats why Peter Jackson's work with LOTR is so greatly admired. He went for it full steam. After Dune 1 they should have said: ok, we go for it, we do Messiah and Clildren and put something absolutely incredible on the moviemap for people to enjoy far in the future. Dune 2 just reaffirmed the massive succes of Villeneuve's adapatation. Just stay on course!

If they can't make a movie as good (or almost as good) as part TwoI hope they don't make any movie at all. Part one and part two are so spectacular I don't want the memory being a lame third movie.

Denise can take a break because he can do one of 2 things: recast or wait till everyone gets older and then make the second book because it is 50 years after the 1st one.
