David lynch said it himself it was the production execs who wanted a 2:30 movie instead of 3 and no parts 1 and 2, just in one. Poor man had to work with what he had
@Afdog Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure that extra 30 minutes would’ve saved the movie - it was a mess, poor visuals, odd acting sometimes, complete disregard of almost all important side characters like Stilgar and complete change of plot and meaning behind it The original story was about the fact that religious messiahs are usually not messiahs, and this all thing is manipulated and people should really beware of charismatic leaders. I guess that’s why the book is such a blast - it leaves some bitter sweet ending. Like good guys have won, but you’re not so sure it’s a good thing anymore and even if they’re really good guys. While in Lynch version this topic is completely erased and it’s pretty standard “revenge story” without any extra layers of meaning

@@Afdog Yup Lynch fans want to relieve him of any responsibility for how crap this movie is. But the truth is that he also flopped and even if he had no influence from the studio, He can never adapt Dune well. It just isnt within his capabilities and past his limit as a director. Not saying he's a poor director, obviously he's Great! But Lynch fans should get off his dick. He is limited in some regard. Oops, hope they dont attack me now for stating facts.

@Leslie Bannister just curious, but did you also read the 3 books after the first? Paul and his children do have prescience and his son mutates into a worm. Lynches creepy directing style captured the bizarreness of it all fairly well, special effects or not
@Afdog Жыл бұрын
@@Pete-jr4lw yep I read them and actually bizarre stuff started mainly from Leto and progressed further as I see it First one was much more direct in this without all these partially incomprehensible speeches of Worm Leto. By meaning of the story I meant that in the book it’s literally was said that Paul isn’t even happy that he will win himself as he knows what is expected to become of the universe if he wins and even considers that maybe if he kills Jessica and himself it will be better option for humanity. And this topic is almost completely skipped in the movie. That’s what I was talking about. Regarding Paul’s mad dreams - I actually prefer new version more as it more looked like visions of the future (and even confused ones, as first we think this is future and then we understand that this is only possible future), while Lynch’s complete surrealism maybe more conceptual, but it tells you nothing as you can’t understand what this means

The second acts biggest flaw is that it barely spends any time when Paul is with the Fremen. And the worm ride is very anticlimactic. Also it does exposition very poorly so that if you have no knowledge of Dune then you will have no idea what’s going on. The acting is terrible especially with Paul; who has little to no emotion. And mediocre acting for most everyone else. The only standout is Brad Dourif as Piter who was quite good.

He changed the story a lot and added elements that were not in the book. I just re-read Dune, it's one of my top favorite books. I actually have been thinking of writing a paper on the differences from Lynch's Screenplay and Frank Herbert's text. The talk Leto and Paul have before leaving Caladan is beautiful, but not in the book's text. It adds to the movie splendidly. "I'll miss the sea, but a person needs new experiences. They jar something deep inside, allowing them to grow. Without change, something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The Sleeper Must Awaken". The heart plugs are Lynch's creation, they are such a vile and disturbing yet perfect addition. The Barron's skin disease and the fact that he flies in his suspensors (vs them just helping support him) are Lynch's additions. In the book, Paul asks about the mice that hop in the desert and what they're called. That's how he gets the name Muad'Dib. In Lynch's film, he asks "what the mouse shadow on the second moon" is called. I love that the Reverend Mothers are bald. There is no mention of "folding space" in the book but it fits perfectly. There is no mention of Guildsmen living in Spice tanks or being disfigured until Dune Messiah. It is a perfectly Lynchian creation! The utterly vile looking, alien Guildsmen in his movie! The casting is Amazing and poignant. In the book, Chani says, "tell me of the waters of your homeworld, Usul". Movie: tell me of your homeworld, Usul. Frank Herbert writes of "the Weirding Way" in the book, but never extrapolates on it. Hence, there are no "weirding modules" in the text. Lynch's addition of weirding modules is genius. I could go on. In conclusion, Lynch's movie Dune from 1984 is delightful, ingenious and one of my top 10 favorite movies. It showcases the brilliance of his creativeness. I prefer it to his other films, since I am such a fan of the Dune series. But Twin Peaks and FWWM are also my Lynchian favorites. Don't diss Lynch's Dune without giving it a good go and I highly recommend reading the Dune Series! Father, The Sleeper Has Awakened! Also, think of the cinematic technology of the 80s. There was no CGI in 1984 and I think the special effects were groundbreaking. If only Jodorowsky had finished his version!!!

The theatrical cut is sadly the ONY official Lynch approved cut even if he could not make it himself. He felt the 3 hour TV Cut was absolutely horrible and refused to have his name in the titles, hence the TV cut says "Directed by Alan Smithee". I would LOVE to see how an actual Directors Cut by David Lynch would look like if he would be given the chance but to this day he still refuses to touch Dune again. They really broke him with it back then. But i think it's important for him to find his peace with it and face it once more to ACTUALLY finally have HIS version.

@@KRAFTWERK2K6 He has said many times there is no "his" version. The film he shot was predicated on that 2.5 hour limit. There is more "stuff" but there is no significantly longer film that embodies his full vision because he never shot it.
