@@TheAxtonman The next two books should be read to appreciate the flow of the story, but TL;DR it's detailed in Dune Messiah (especially) and Children of Dune that the Fremen legions from Arrakis and the Fremen Fedaykin death troops spread out to bring Paul's jihad to the rest of the populated planets in the Imperium, a war that kills ~61 billion people. This movie diverges dramatically from what actually happens in the next two books because "peace" and "love" were not what Paul was after, and he falls into despair over what he caused and became. Paul is a messiah for about 5 minutes before everything goes to shit with his name on it. Oh, he does not cause the rain either. Precipiation eventually happens on Arrakis but it's not because he's a literal god.

Despite it’s box office failure, I’ve always thought the film a victim of the science fiction purist critics, I still regard as good, but somewhat abridged. However, the many alternative scenes illustrate how much better it could have been .
@deanfirnatine78143 жыл бұрын
I do not think the book purists caused the film to fail, average movie goers did not get a more intellectual film like this in its era just over their head most wanted dumbed down entertainment, plus Hollywood execs forced massive cuts to the film which really hurt its story and the marketing was terrible compared to other high dollar films, so it was a combo.
@Korvintage643 жыл бұрын
@@deanfirnatine7814 I always find it strange that the film became a cult classic after home release. Perhaps because the viewers had more time to study it & appreciate the nuances. @robwebnoid57632 жыл бұрын
@@deanfirnatine7814 ... That's true, it was originally planned to either be a trilogy or 2 parts. I'm certain of the 2 parts though, which was discussed when Ridley Scott was the hired director in the late 1970's during early screen writing, a few years before Lynch. Today, the Villeneuve version gives redemption to that 2-parter concept to help flesh out the novel twice as long as the Lynch version. However, I might have preferred a trilogy, but space them out 1 year apart instead of the normal 2 years. Having read the novel in 1983, there is just so much detail to get through, but I do "get it" that a normal viewing audience would probably get bored with the religion & politics in the story as well. It would take a really good script & director to keep the audience watching without confusion or yawning.

@robwebnoid57632 жыл бұрын
@@moffch4319 ... Well the other thing too is Lynch thought he was getting another actor named Patrick Stewart, not this Brit. There was probably no more time to cast another actor as they had to keep production schedule going. Aldo Ray did "look" the part of Gurney, wise, stocky & surly. Perhaps thats why they got Josh Brolin to play the part, because he looks like a mean SOB since Gurney is a military/combat leader. The problem with Dune 1984 is Universal Studios cut it down to 2 hours. Not good for a 400-page novel. It was originally planned as either trilogy or 2 parts (2 parts I'm certain), back when Ridley Scott was hired in the late 1970's during early screen writing. After the cut, it was honed down to 3 hours, then again finally to 2. This really disappointed Lynch & he had to cut a lot out of the script & hence it just turned into a mess for him. He disowned the movie in later years after all the flack he & the movie took. Today, the Villeneuve version gets to redeem that 2-part concept, which is really more reasonable for a long book, although maybe a trilogy may have been more respectful to the length of the story.

It's amazing how many people are so certain they're "right"... and are willing to kill for it. Every time I read Dune or see one of the movies, that point stands out above everything else. Are Paul and Leto the heroes... or are they worse than their predecessors? Although Dune is science fiction, it very accurately portrays the atmosphere of real life: several "houses" all controlling the lives of their citizens... or else.

“A beginning is a very delicate time. Know then, that is is the year 10191. The known universe is ruled by the Padishah Emperor Shaddam the Fourth, my father. In this time, the most precious substance in the universe is the spice Melange. The spice extends life. The spice expands consciousness. The spice is vital to space travel. The Spacing Guild and its navigators, who the spice has mutated over 4000 years, use the orange spice gas, which gives them the ability to fold space. That is, travel to any part of the universe without moving. Because the Guild controls all interplanetary travel, they are the highest power in the Universe. The Spice also plays a very secret role in the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, of which I am a part. The sisterhood has been interfering with the marriages, and the children thereof, of the great Houses of the Universe, cleverly intermixing one bloodline with another to form the Kwisatz Haderach, a super being. They plan to control this super being and use his powers for their own selfish purposes. The breeding plan has been carried out in a strict manner for 90 generations. The goal of the super being is in sight. But now, so close to the prize, a Bene Gesserit woman, Jessica, the bound concubine of Duke Leto Atreides, who has been ordered to bear only daughters, has given birth to a son. Oh, yes. I forgot to tell you. The spice exists on only one planet in the entire universe. A desolate, dry planet with vast deserts. Hidden away within the rocks of these deserts are a people known as the Fremen, who have long held a prophecy that a man would come, a messiah, who would lead them to true freedom. The planet is Arrakis, also known as Dune.”

@mikesolomon55846 жыл бұрын
Hopefully Villeneuve's movie will do it. BUT, there were many places where Lynch got it right. You can't tell this story in an hour and a half. I was hoping for a 10 hour... Dune on Netflix so this story could breathe the way it is supposed to. Many folks would not like it because it would be too slow, but it would be proper.
@lucasd16466 жыл бұрын
The books told an extremly complex story that would need a 4 hour movie to just scrape the surface. David Lynch did a great job in the movie with what he was given, consindering that Delaurentis held him back, both in budget and ideas.

Nice job of editing. I also like the final few seconds when you cut Alia's rather stupid statement of the obvious and replaced it with the overlay quote. Somehow that seems more powerful to me.

I saw a special screening of this in Seattle with Frank Herbert prior to the theatrical release. I believe this was David Lynch's first color film. Eraserhead and The Elephant Man were the depth of his catalogue at the time. It was filled with his trademark low frequency and irritating sounds to unsettle the viewer subconsciously.

Love this movie. I watch it as often as time permits. This is the first time I’ve seen this. Think they should’ve combined this engine and the ending that was used. Remember, “Never a drop of rain in Arakis.” The whole point was to see it rain. Really well done.

Personal taste, I would have ended with Paul and Alia standing together without the rain, and kept the original credits with Take My Hand playing. Overall, good job.

Yeah, I still feel the "wives" quote is a better way to end it. Just a bit of rearranging of shots here, and no silly bad rain optical effects.
@brandonhall62906 жыл бұрын
The wives quote should be the last words spoken. Switch to epic image of Paul and Alia standing together, have the same music that leads into Take My Hand, fade to credits.

@rhaenyralikesyoutube62895 жыл бұрын
Sting was awesome in this movie, honestly. Feyd Rautha is much more disturbing and neurotic in the book, in my opinion. Sting sells his personality very well. However, he was toned down quite a bit for the movie. The Baron, his Uncle, was more sadistic than outwardly disgusting, and HR Giger really needed to do the concept design on their planet, like they originally planned, because Giger wanted to make the Harkonens very accurate to the book. It's a shame they were made more physically disgusting than sadistic and psychotic.

Yeah, I've loved this for over 30 years, but never could get into the books, so it was weird when I found out a few months ago that she was the Baron's secret lovechild...
@skepticalfaith52016 жыл бұрын
I didn’t remember that. I DO remember that Jessica went against the order when she had a boy instead of a girl. The girl would have married Feyad and THEIR son would have been the Kwisatz Haderak. That was why Paul was tested with the Gom Jabber - to make sure he wasn’t “a monster”.
@kuririn19755 жыл бұрын
It was revealed she is the second offspring the Baron. Her mother Mohiam blackmailed the Homosexual Baron into a sexual encounter which produce a somewhat ugly girl. Then the Baron raped Mohiam and that union produced Jessica

The original movie gave out small book that contained glossaries and the names of the characters written in it for the moviegoers. I was one of them! But alas, I lost mine! I would give a great deal for one of them; even for a glance and copy! I give the poster 10 STARS for putting this up here! I hope that you're not snagged by KZbin for playing copyrighted material, because this is definitely worth money. It's only available in certain circumstances.
@SKEptic-mg2dd4 жыл бұрын
Hearing the thoughts of the characters always struck me as off putting, like Lynch was saying, "It was in the book so I've got to get it in somehow." Other than that, a great visual experience. Herbert is said to have set out to create a different world(s). It's ok to read about such rich detail, but visually slows things down. Hope the new one just assumes an audience that either already knows or wouldn't care about things as knowing how to put on a stillsuit without being shown, that and they went too far on Harkonnen pustules and appetite for freshly picked cow tongues.

1984 DUNE is an EPIC MASTERPIECE! Now revered with a cult-like following. I fear the remake will fall short. Lynch's version has set the bar high. Most remakes are never able to outshine the originals.
