Many MMO's make statements like this. If they're not showing it, I don't believe it. Hopefully they're being honest and not just hopeful, but heard all this before from other marketing teams. Reminds me of this old test I did where they invited literally thousands of players to take part, all playing on one map. It was these weird spider aliens vs humans, very very basic, but successfully ran thousands of players on a single map/instance.

Seriously concerned about overpromising it all sounds great on paper but seems enormously complicated under the hood IF its as dynamic and deep as they are making it sound. I sincerely hope they can pull it off as I would love to dive into a game like they are describing.

Nothing about what they explained in this trailer is 'enormously complicated'; many of these aspects already exists in Star Citizen and Star Citizen isn't even a completed game. I assure you, if they overpromise anything, it'll be their competency to implement these existing mechanics. That, and 'thousands of players on one map'. Modern MMOs can't do this, and they won't be able to do that either. It's technologically impossible. Even Ashes of Creation, which is toting incredibly high numbers of players on the screen at once, has only reached about 400 actors on the screen while maintaining performance. They won't get anywhere close to a thousand. They can't even host reliably host 100 player servers on Conan.

Overpromising? It doesn't look promising at all. It looks like a Battlefield game. Just pvp in a desert with guild battles interrupted by worms. Not the most imaginative use of the Dune IP imo.

It's a Funcom game so my excitement is equally tempered by the realistic expectations that they're not going to execute fully on the ideas they're expressing. That's just been a reality since the days of Anarchy Online; I've loved all their games, but I've never felt a single one reached the level it could have.

On the "water management" side of things. It would make sense for water to be a big deal at first, however if they follow the lore it should not matter nearly as much once you find or make a stillsuit as that recycles almost all of your water.

Of course water matter for the fremen? Stillsuits are not magic, however they have a strict water discipline. You could argue that they have water caches but these are for vegetation

Yep. You can see in the clip where the person is panning through concept art pictures on the computer that there are stillsuit "tiers". The one shown was a "tier 5". I assumed the same thing where once you start getting stillsuits it'll be less of a problem

To Funcom's credit, Anarchy Online's tower wars with hundreds of players was still some of the most fun I had in any MMO to date. Yeah you had to look at the ground part of the time or the lag would get you, but it was in the very early 2000s, 2001-2004 for me, so it was normal for the time's connections and PCs.

It all sounds pretty cool and interesting, my biggest concern is that the entire environment is desert. How much desert can you take before the environment gets old itself. I understand the storms and changing sands/rocks and points of interest, but I think this might push players away at some point.

yeah I kinda agree. Even tho its sticking to the lore, gameplay wise I think for a lot of people it might get stale after a while. I think Conan Exiles did it great in this sense, whole early game is spent in a desert, but as you progress more you discover harder zones which are different biomes.

I played conan exiles which has about 6 biomes, and found ourselves always playing in the desert for some reason.......maybe all that vitamin d just kept feeling great.

Unforgettable fights. Having just 2 factions often turn into zerg vs zerg and the exploiting of chokepoints. No risk of flanking nor anything the overpopulated realm needs to react to. I wish it turn out great, but knowing how I've tried Age of Conan, Conan Exiles, Secret World and even Anarchy Online when they all released and I didn't stay too long in either of them due to not having anyone to play with I don't expect this to be any different unless I actually find a fun group to play with.

This seems like a repeat of the type marketing and hype campaign they laid out for Conan Exiles. It's very easy to spin concepts to sound epic in scale and presentation when you weave a tale around them when in reality they're a pretty simple mechanic in the actual game. For example: They call the style of combat "Combined Arms", then proceed to explain that basically what this means is that there's abilities, melee weapons, ranged weapons, and vehicles which is... well, a basic feature in a game like this in 2023. They then hype it up to its theoretical most epic scale (tons of players simultaneously warring with vehicles and infantry in massive battles) and paint the image in your head that this will be your bread and butter gameplay, when actually they're presenting what looks like another flavour of Conan Exiles, where you theoretically *could* do all these things too, but really, it's not the usual scale of the game.

I completely recommend the audiobooks. They are well voice acted and help with the daunting task of interpreting the vision of Frank. He is a blackbelt of the written language. Dune is a hard read, but more because his sentence structure is so amazing and not necessarily using obscure words.

Funcom is *really* good with lore and world building. That makes me expect an very immersive game experience. They are however utterly incompetent with balancing a game (weapons/damage, etc.) and making a functional in-game economy. So, I think I’m going to enjoy the game a lot, but expect to having to tolerate at ton of frustration with the gameplay.

I know what you mean: Age of Conan was actually terrific, at least the world was and the first 50 hours of play. Then they didn't find a way to follow it up with a game you'd stick with. Was playable and fun to start with. Better than many.

There’s a big piece of the lore I think theyll need to ignore in favor of fun - in the books part of why melee combat is favored is because shooting a shield with a lasgun results in a massive explosion that would usually kill the shooter. But having shields that attract worms is cool and using lasguns is cool so I think they’ll just need to shrug and say that’s not how it works in the game

@Force Gaming You should start keeping an eye on a game called SCUM. Still in early development, currently on 0.9 build. Its the most advanced and detailed survival game right now. They just introduced hostile NPCs. I would love to see a video of your thoughts on the game.

Just so many things that Bylos is talking about, has already existed in Conan exiles. You could say that they are learning from their past works, but Im just wondering how much of Dune is actually unique.. For example, the talk about needing spice to develop abilities but more spice means you get addicted to spice - Conan exiles introduced this thing called sorcery. To cast different tiers of spells in CE you had to be different tiers of corrupted. Corruption would lower your hit points and stamina and cap out at -50%. To me, the spice addiction reminded me of that. Conan exiles obviously already has thirst and temperatures that can kill you, Conan exiles has sandstorm you have to shelter from, Conan exiles has god avatars which are somewhat similar to the Sandworm.. and so on and so forth. Most things in Dune:A seem to be a continuation from Conan exiles.

If you break down the 'consume water to stave off thirst' mechanic to a simplified perspective, it's a timer. The timer refills by visiting and then storing spare time from a specific timer location or locations. Sometimes you can generate time from craftable time devices, like wells and condensers, but it is a timer, at the end of the day. What would be nice is if water was lost from taking damage, as blood from your wound causes you to lose water, cutting your time, but a sealed still suit functioning correctly keeps your water timer from ticking down or at least drastically extends its timer to near indefinite timeframes.

If that gets you curious than the first saga (book 1to 3) is very nice and different from each other. The rest is basically world building, fun but not necessary... What I try to say is that it is not that hard to a Start the first books are not thousand and thousand of pages. Dune geeks signing out!

PlanetSide 2 has done largescale combined-arms battles for literal decades, with well over a 1000 people on the same map, and it's some of the best gameplay experience I've ever had, still is now in 2023. Surely something similar can be done with the Dune IP by this studio. Hell, I've been saying for years that if someone wanted to print money, just license the Star Wars IP to Daybreak, do even just a basic reskin of everything, and you'd make a mint. There are very few quality executions of this type of game, hopefully they manage to pull it off.

Guild warfare only works for hard core players. Getting two different guilds to fight each other and have it balanced and fun is extremely rare. Only base raiding works. But in this case you would just attract a worm to an enemy base. This game does not look like for casual players. Casual players only log in when they get free time and normally get killed and can't make progress because they can't invest enough time, and don't tend to want to play much with others as they don't have enough free time to sync up with others.

I'd assume based off of what Force said in the video, there may be safe or safer spots to build bases, maybe negating the entirety of having a worm attracted at a base location. Obviously just speculation.

I'm probably repeating something that's already been said but likely got lost in the many comments. Shields in the setting are absolute protection against anything coming in fast, and penetrated by anything coming in slow. Including blades. Bullets or a hard sword swing just get bounced or vaporized, but slow stuff gets through like air or something handed over or tossed gently or rolled along the ground. Watching a sword or knife fight in Dune based media is like watching in slow motion, or watching a sword dance. The combatants need to come at each other slow enough to not trigger the shields, and hard enough to actually get through each other's counter-moves and land hits.

Not enthused but the storm thing. It just means certain areas will be unavailable and be on a weekly timer. Maybe bi or tri weekly. Imagine you had a quest to turn in one of these areas and have to wait a week or two for the storms to uncover it again. Good on paper, probably crap in practice.

The shield actually protects you from melle attacks aswell, you however can penetrate it if you swing your weapon very slowly "The slow weapon penetrates the shield".

I dont really care too much about the number of players. If it's a good sandbox survival in the dune universe it could be 100 players on a map and I'd still be ecstatic. I had a negative bias against Funcom because I was pissed at them for how they managed the (old) game "Age of Conan" (not Exiles). Since then that stuck to me, which is why I didn't even bother, for example, playing Secret World. But with time, that bias is gone now and when I looked at Dune, I admit I was sold. I think it could really be a good game.

2 points why the game can be bad *no gameplay video(which means they don't have any special gameplay elements to showcase them) *bad "game developers" from gonan exiles(combat bad and the shop that sells the 90grat separate triangle floors that should be included in the main game which the players need/want for years to build properly. In addition, there are of course all the other shop items, for example a small decorative tree for 5-10 euros/dollar. do not pre-order even if gameplay material will probably be shown a week before release. please wait 1-3 weeks and look at the review!!

I'm also getting Rust vibes from this game. A Conan Exiles type survival game in the Dune universe. Expect janky gunplay, bad balance, and gimmicky PvP against massive factions that have lots of resources from lots of players, where the solo player has to suffer alone. Hopefully it will be better, but don't bet on it unless you like losing bets.

I kind of feel certain that you’re going to choose a faction that character creation climb, because in Dune some actions are very polarized. It would seem to me like that would be the basis for the open moral DVD ass crack, Saxonburg for faction, but you can’t just be changing on the fly that doesn’t get all that just makes it a big one for box fight that nobody knows who the shirt at or attack Seems like factions will probably be at a part of your character progression. You’ll have to choose maybe not at at at consecration, but somewhere along the character development you’ll have to commit

I used to play conan but coming from rust which is a survival game, in conan you don't get much pvp. But this sounds like conan but with way more players which sounds fun.
