I truly wish so many scenes developing Yueh's character weren't cut. I feel like this betrayal came out of nowhere for people who hadn't read the book. It was a very interesting detail that the way Yueh's Suk conditioning was broken wasn't due to his love for his wife, but for his hatred of the Baron. He betrayed the Atreides family because he *wanted* to kill the Baron. I think that also adds so much to the Baron as a villain as well.

I don't think they could've gotten everything from the book in there, but I think it would've been enough to know Yueh's wife was captured by the Harkonnens--could still have the twist that it's not about his wife, but about his hatred for the Baron.

In the book, Yueh knows 95% that his wife is dead. He knows he will be killed too. He is after vengeance, not after saving the wife. The tooth is his one and only trump card. Unfortunately, the Duke is too drugged and confused to properly use his opportunity ideally. He crushes the tooth while the Baron is too far away, and ends up not killing him in the end.

@NACLGames2 жыл бұрын
It was not a flaw. You need to read between the lines to see that Yueh understood the Harkonnens well, he already expected that his wife was most likely dead. Especially critical is that Piter De Vries, whether knowingly or unknowingly, broke Yueh's Imperial conditioning not by holding his wife hostage, but by implanting the desire in Yueh to sacrifice everything to kill the Baron. In the process, Yueh could reason through his conditioning that he was not betraying the duke. Hatred is also implied in the Dune-verse to be one of the most powerful of motivators. De Vries underestimated Yueh's ability to find a way to kill the Baron either way...he was an arrogant twisted-mentat who believe he could reduce humans down to the calculations in his head. Yueh was much more interesting than just some random doctor who broke under the enemy.

@@Jin-1337 Part of the training of the Suk doctors, of which Yueh was a member, was mental conditioning that made it impossible for them to even consider taking a human life. @davidintrabartolo5887 Жыл бұрын
Yueh was literally the last person anyone thought of betraying the Atreides due to his Imperial conditioning and this surprise went a long way. Sukh doctors like Yueh were thought to be totally incapable of betraying their clients no matter what thanks to the conditioning imposed upon them by the Sukh school. This allowed for a healthy level of trust between Sukh doctors and extremely powerful clients, namely the Padishah Emperor, in a world where poison, betrayal and plots run rampant. Yueh was the first and only exception to this otherwise ironclad rule.
