Okay, this fact is actually misconstrued all the time. But the 10,000 year timeline is actually 10k years from the ending of the Butlerian Jihad (the war against machines). Dune actually starts about 20,000 years after our current time. More or less. 😅

I think where people and "explainers" get confused is that it's 10,000 AG (After Guild formation) which is 10,000 years after the first development of FTL (non-instantaneous) travel. There's also speculation that the Dune timeline doesn't share our own but is set in an alternate universe, but it's hard to prove given the lack of information on the Old Empire.

Disagree. The Lynch version is as complete as it was meant to be. It simply didn't get a sequel. Same with the mini-series. Hopefully, all of Herbert's works will get their adaptation in one form or another, though a mini-series works best in this case, IMO.

@@Aven236 Anyone who reads Ed Naha's The Making of Dune would know that there's so much more that Lynch wanted to do with that movie that was either cut for time or wasn't possible for a whole host of reasons including the frustrations of shooting in a country (Mexico) where they had constant issues with the corrupt government and customs who would often extort money to let them get what they needed into and out of the country in time.

David Lynch for the aesthetic, Villeneuve for the cinematic experience, SyFy's mini-series' for the lore. I'd read the books multiple times prior to the Syfy series' and can safely say you probably don't have to read the first 3 books if you'd watched them. Yes, you'll be missing out on some deep lore and the full experience by not reading them but the Syfy adaptations were very well done.

The major problem is Dune 1984's production value was so amazing you didn't even want to watch this for the story. And I don't care what people say they did a good job on Dune(1984). The casting most likely could have been better but the acting, writing and graphics were great.

Yes, this version is the most faithful to the books, and imho this is the only format Dune can be done. The new movie (don't even want to talk about it, it has its pros and cons) is just a Dune themed reinvented popcorn firework compared to this. I highly recommend the series over the movie. AND highly recommend the books. even this covers the book only around 60%

I liked the miniseries a lot. I was actually surprised that they even attempted to adapt Children of Dune. After the 2nd book Dune Messiah, each book got increasingly complex and more difficult to read, but rather than being too complicated, I thought the Children of Dune miniseries did a fine job of making the story easier to digest.

As a fan of the entire Dune book series, I think all the adaptations are great in their own ways. I like the Lynch version for its bizarre and goofy interpretations of the characters, though the story itself was incoherent to say the least. I enjoyed each series as a mostly faithful interpretation, though it is painfully low budget and the acting wasn't particularly good in my opinion. And I enjoy the new movies for their cinematography, excellent acting, and epic moments, even though it deviates from the book in a number of ways. I think attempting to precisely adapt any book to film is a fools errand. Not only is it not possible, it's boring and pointless. I love seeing different iterations of a great story.

Wait....why is it impossible to adapt a movie or show 100% accurately to the book? It's not impossible. It just requires more money to get every single detail. Probably more money than it would be worth. But it doesn't mean it's impossible. All they have to do is write the script following the book precisley.
@Cethinn
@Cethinn 2 күн бұрын
@@jamesvan2201 No, it's impossible. When reading each reader is filling things in in their own way with their own ideas. Making movie or show requires solidifying the ideas into one version, which is not what's in the books. You have to create new things, adapt some things to make them fit, and choose specific interpretations of what could have multiple interpretations.

I own both series on blu-ray. They’re the most book-accurate versions I’ve seen so far. Seeing most of the original cast return for the second series helped considerably; the montage at the end of Messiah was almost heartbreaking because we’d had hours getting attached to the characters already. The recastings of Alice Krige and Steven Berkoff was a bit unfortunate, neither really had the intensity that Jessica and Stilgar had displayed in the original series, both seemed to be “phoning it in” on this production even though they’re both demonstrably very capable performers. The note that the original series feels like a stage play is fair comment - it reminded me of the “feel” of Tom Baker’s later Doctor Who era; so for the more wrinkly viewers among us that’s actually no bad thing, but for those with less attention span or less appreciation of how CGI has evolved it’d disappoint. Meh, those same people probably wouldn’t appreciate Babylon 5 either, so...nuts.

I couldn't agree more. These mini-series do not need to be apologised for, they still are fantastic. I bought them all in boxed set DVD's and watch them every now and then and they never disappoint. As a 61 year old my fear is that the generations raised on TV and now digital media of any sort never read a book to allow them to make a comparison between the written words and another's interpretation of them. I enjoyed Villeneuve's first instalment and look forward to the next. Sadly I will never see Jodorowsky's attempt but so it goes.

Ian McNiece was (as always) incredible as Vladamir Harkonnen and much respect goes out too to William Hurt, Julie Cox, Daniela Amavia, Karel Dobrý and Saskia Reeves as well. Same, I watched it yesterday lol. I have enjoyed Villeneuve's Dune series so far and visually it is certainly amazing, but I personally prefer the storytelling and more faithful adaptation provided by the miniseries. It is simply impossible to properly adapt a book series as long and complex as Dune to movie format. The perfect adaptation to me would be a new "Game of Thrones" like TV series with Villeneuve's visuals/direction and the screenplay of the 2000's miniseries.

DUNE and CHILDREN OF DUNE were made on a budget! Each mini series had been done on 20 million for each! They ARE SPECTACULAR in their own right! The writing and acting are superb! The cast was excellent! The only way a truely faithful DUNE will ever happen is by a big budget mini series! With time contraints of a major movie too much dialog and the all important subtle nuances are lost! A FAITHFUL DUNE IS POSSIBLE! It will hopefully be done one day! Until then these are the best possible!!

Yes, some of the miniseries costumes were goofy, but I think they nailed the female attire much of the time. In the novel, the Bene Gesserit are much sought after as wives and concubines. That told me they were HOT, and some of Herbert's descriptions bear that out. However, both movies have them looking like witches out of MacBeth regardless of age or position. The miniseries does well to enhance their beauty and poise.

Yes!!! Where the hell is the weirding way in these films? People are wondering why couldn't the Fremen defeat the Harkonnens if they were that strong all along. Now people have pointed out that Paul needed the family atomics to threaten spice production, but still, by Paul and Jessica teaching some chosen Fremen the weirding way, it gave them the edge over the Sardaukar which the Fremen were roughly on par with in blade combat. Villeneuve made it as though the Fedaykin were Chani's unit good to go and match skills witht he Sardaukar.

@@Imhotep-Still-Juicy Another thing I have a minor gripe with is how the atomics are introduced in the movie as just another big and flashy weapon to turn the tide of the war. In the books they are a pretty big deal, not only for their firepower, but to the fact that they are actually strictly forbidden by the Great Convention signed by all the Great Houses of the Imperium, so it was going to be a controversial and risky political move. In fact, Paul uses it to open a breach in the shield wall during the final battle because such an use somehow circumvents the Convention as it does not directly harms human beings. In Villeneuve's Dune this also happens this way but there is no further context about why besides providing a distraction and letting the sandstorm wreak havoc in the Imperium's forces defenses and communications.

This is my definitive version of Dune, and I think all the characters were perfectly cast. It's hard to watch the new version because they're just too different. It would be like watching Timothee Chalamet play Luke Skywalker in a reboot of A New Hope.

Thanks for this video… So setting production quality and acting performances aside (the SciFi Channel just can’t compete with studios)- I love the miniserieses. They have kinda tarnished the new Dune movies for me b/c I expect more- which I got in production and acting talent but I really noticed the deficiencies in the story differences more and what the new movies had to edit out or chose to change. I wish I could mash both together ;)

Bingo! Same for me, the mini series is the most faithful and full telling of Frank Herbert's Dune there is. The changes made to Chani by Villeneuve are for me personally as jarring and saddening as 'warrior Galadriel' in the Rings of Power as is the splitting of the Fremen into religious South and less-religious North. I want Frank Herbert's Dune, not a reimagining where someone tries to tell the story 'better' by taking lines out of character's mouths and planting them in others to flesh out their character. There are plenty of ways to give Chani, Jessica and Irulan screen time without altering them. I found the devout, capable, but warm Chani of the mini-series to be more dignified and likeable and the same for Stilgar. Villeneuve made him a jest in Dune Part 2 and the character lost his dignity compared to the mini series where he could be both teacher and fanatic without having to utter "As Written" every time Paul farted. Villeneuve really hammered the point of 'false prophet', beware popular leaders, Bene Gesserit falsehoods etc over and over in the first film and second, which sort of ruins the whole point of Dune Messiah in which Frank wanted the peoploe who cheered for Paul earlier to question themselves on whether they should in Dune Messiah. p.s. I'm always cheering for Paul. Can't believe people read him as a villain, it's way more complicated than that. I'll stop rambling now, ha ha.

I was pretty disappointed with the new films honestly. Even with two long films they somehow had to cut many important scenes and vital subplots. Important themes are missing. It should have been a series. Every time someone suggests it should have been a series, the apologists storm in to say it couldn't be done on a TV budget. Has everyone just forgotten Game of Thrones and the advancements in last fifteen years of television? Dune doesn't even need to be special effects heavy. There are hardly any major set pieces in the books. It's a bullshit argument. It could have been a series that ran through the entire saga. In concerned that the director said he will only do 3 movies, so I hope he doesn't change stuff and close off the possibility for another director to continue after him. I need God Emperor to happen.

The basic scoop here is the blurays exist outside the USA, there are region free ones available from Germany I believe. The problem is the directors cut was only released on DVD, so you'd be better off finding it and then you can watch any extras available. Anyways it's even more complicated because Australia released a remastered bluray of Dunes series, to watch this you'd need to use a region free player. As for Children of Dune just buy whatever you can find because they're all the same versions. What we need is an all inclusive region free directors cut but that'll never happen since scifi is now syfy

Esthetically, this version was shit, but it was light years ahead of the total shit Lynch put out in '84.... As for plot and adaptation, well, I was impressed to no end. Compared to DV's DUNE this version is far better as it relates to story and adaptation. uuuuugh!

This is still my favorite version by far, ya people can complain about the special effects but its story is so well told that it holds up against the effects. I don’t think the new can, the effects are what hold the story together. That is why I love the miniseries. I wish more people would watch it 1st instead of the movies. They would definitely have a better understanding of the books anyway. Ya I say books because of the Children of Dune miniseries that follows which covers Dune Messiah and Children of Dune. There is politics but also the characters are just more fleshed out and more relatable.

I loved the mini series just not the costumes. Reminded me of manga and anime but not in a good way. Costume choices for some of the characters and groups were weird and made them look more goofy than fierce or strong. Medieval court outfits and jesters come to mind. Headpieces were distracting.
@Imhotep-Still-Juicy

I think the costumes let it down more than anything else. Could you imagine everything else the same but with the costumes from the new films and maybe a slightly larger sand-pit for the actors to perform in.... there would be no need for any remakes.

And BETTER than Dune 1 and 2 that just came out. Dune 1/2 have better CGI, music and locations but the 2 series had better acting and a better script. The two new movies had lots of big names but both movies were hollow. At times it seemed like the cast was at a table reading.

Saskia Reeves had done a great job in "Frank Herbert's Dune" (2000) miniseries. She has portrayed her charactr very well showing Lady Jessica's deep and complicated relations with her son (as a Bene Gesserit with a Harkonnen blood), and mourning the death of her beloved duke. I can still recall her words: " - And then, my heart turned into stone". She was truly captivating.

I wonder if there will ever be a video in which the narrator actually pronounces the characters' names correctly and doesn't get the facts completely mixed up and wrong. Leto became a worm by covering his body in sandtrout, not by taking too much spice. Alia's name is pronounced AH-li-a. Farad'n isn't offered any power by Leto. His role at the end of the book is to mate with Ghanima to carry on the Atreides bloodline. It's Farad'n's mother who wants him to overthrow the Atreides and take back the throne for the Corrinos.

I heard recently that both of these miniseries were the top ones shown on Sci-Fi, not failures as this video says, I personally don't know as I loved them all - Battlestar Galactica as well. It was killed by the merger with CBS and a pivot to cheap reality shows and away from actual Science Fiction content. No wonder they changed the name of the channel to Scy-Fy at the same time!

My wife and I thought they were marvelous. Dune and its two follow-ons are political-religious stories, not blaster-swashbucklers. Never meant for the big screen. They have a slower pace because they are slower paced. The 1984 movie has a few good visuals but the adaptation was trash. The recent movies are ruined with PC/DEI bullshit. Given their budget, SF Channel, and the producer and director, should be hailed as heroes for this adaptation. Excellent review.

I think the scifi mini-series is more wholistically believable and the character development far outweighs the new Dune movies. Chalamet's character comes off as pompous and filled with self righteousness from the get-go. The new Dune movies also try too hard to be artsy and dark. In the scifi series, the character of Paul develops and doubts himself, like any good hero-myth saga shows.

I am a fan of both. Watched on SyFy then, Have on DVD. I read all 6 original novels in my youth, in the 80's. The Lynch film ( and his films, creative view -admiration!) yes, was not allowed to be what it could be. Even the "alternative" version, isn't as complete as a version that can be found on the internet. I was happy with these TV adaptations. I hadn't read Messiah/Children in years, yet number of Herbert's story elements, scenes that still were in my mind -came to life in these adaptations. I hoped for a "God Emperor" series! The last two Herbert novels,...well, as a 16 year old, they lost me in philosophy, and debate. I have never returned to read them. I am now 54 years. The D.V. Dune 1 film, amazing -want the second! If D.V. makes "messiah",...I'll want "Children" and "Emperor". Yes, these adaptations are't perfect (not on location) yet actors, scope, design, intention -glad they were made, like Lynch's film, too.
