The team behind DUNE in conversation with TIFF following its premiere at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. Denis Villeneuve’s much-anticipated retelling of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, and Zendaya.
The 46th Toronto International Film Festival runs September 9 to 18, 2021. For more, visit tiff.net.
Timothée Chalamet leads a remarkable cast in one of the most anticipated films of the year. Adapting Frank Herbert’s legendary novel for a true big-screen experience, Denis Villeneuve confirms his status as that rarest of artists, a visionary maker of blockbusters. DUNE delivers a complete immersion into new, spectacular worlds.
Paul Atreides (Chalamet) is heir to the throne that governs the most important planet in the known universe, Arrakis. His father Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) rules Arrakis, but the desert planet’s chief natural resource, a drug nicknamed the spice that gives its users superhuman powers, makes it the target of violent battles and the constant threat of political treachery. House Atreides will need the help of the Fremen people in the desert, but they insist on their own autonomy. The desert has its own predators as well - gargantuan, merciless sandworms. Paul, who has been raised in a bubble of privilege, now stands at the moment when he must prepare himself for leadership and for battle.
Villeneuve propels DUNE through eyepopping action sequences set against dazzling vistas, always grounding what’s at stake in the emotional lives of his characters. Josh Brolin does terrific work as warrior Gurney Halleck, training Paul for the battles ahead. Rebecca Ferguson plays all the complex nuances of Lady Jessica, a character expanded and given more depth here than in the novel. And just watch Zendaya work in her role as a Fremen desert warrior. From start to finish, DUNE is awe-inspiring - and it’s just the beginning.
Denis Villeneuve was born in Gentilly, Quebec, and studied film at l’Université du Québec à Montréal. His feature Polytechnique (09) received nine Genie Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. His other acclaimed features include Un 32 août sur terre (98), Maelström (00), Incendies (10), Prisoners (13), Enemy (13), Sicario (15), and Arrival (16), all of which played the Festival, and Blade Runner 2049 (17). Dune (21) is his latest film.

You know it’s awesome when the director is recognised as the true star of a movie. Along with Nolan, I think Denis V is the only other director’s name that gets the high budget movie hyped.

@Anonymus X Snyder to an extend, sure. For the others you mentioned, the star power in the movie definitely overpowers the director’s name; the posters and trailers alludes to their names to make a sell, like, a Martin Scorsese film or a James Cameron production; but the hype for a Nolan/Denis V movie around the world is purely based on them, despite whoever’s starring in it. The studio, too, trusts them, even after financial disappointments, because they know they make masterpieces or at the least, a theatrical experience, which will be recognised industry-wide.

@@akhiltrc9708 you're right. Nolan from Memento and on became the star of his movies. Denis from Prisoners and on. Nolan is leaps and bounds above Denis in terms of commercial name power, Denis however is on his way. If Dune make 800 mill plus, and garners critical acclaim he will take the crown as king of modern American cinema. Nolan is on the down down with his latest critical and commercial failure. However you're wrong abt Scorsese, he's someone who nowadays is the star of his movie. Like Denis, Marty became a revered auter starting with Mean Streets which is an iconic indie film that was a smash hit box office and critically, then Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, to name a few. Goodfellas perhaps put him on the map on worldwide commercial level.

@@akhiltrc9708 James cameron is also a household name powerhouse director that gets asses in seats. Hes the only director to make two films that consecutively grossed over 2 billion dollars, and holds the top spot for highest grossing movie of all time. I will agree that Nolan is an anomaly, he has a cult following that guarantees a minimum 100-200 million, and is undeniably one of the most original imaginative Hollywood directors. His box office magic has literally never existed besides perhaps Steven Spielberg. So putting Denis and Nolan together isn't quite accurate. But I can see why you draw the connection.

I read Dune in 1980. I have been waiting for this film all my life. I believe M. Villeneuve’s version will realize what I imagined as I read the book. It is very important to me that the film honours the core principles of the book & that it understands Herbert’s themes & characterizations. I trust M. Villeneuve to tell the Dune story properly because I believe he respects the art & he respects the work of others. This isn’t about his vision of Dune it’s about how he envisioned Dune as a 13 year old, his eyes swallowing up Frank Herbert’s universe just as it was for anyone who read the book at that age or any age. You fall in love with great books & Dune certainly qualifies, it must be respected for all that it is.

And the multiple instances of blubbery crying from her. One of my favorite literary characters destroyed. It was like he spent way too much time on the big epic nature scenes and montages. To be fair I don’t blame them, Denis more than any other writer/director/producer has spoken out passionately against WB’s awful business decision to release new movies in theatres *and* on streaming services simultaneously, as recent films like Black Widow and The Suicide Squad have flopped in the box office as a result of so many people having the option to watch it at home (whether on a streaming service or pirated, whether out of pandemic concerns or simply out of convenience) rather than in the cinema. It has also been this man’s *dream* for nearly half a century to create this movie for people to experience and enjoy on a *big* screen, to be immersed in the world and carried away by it, not casually and passively streamed on their phones/laptops whilst scrolling social media.

It can also result in the brain lacking a "filter" to sort out information, creating a sensorial overload. Secondly, it is not a mannerism in itself, but yes it comes with a series of mannerism and physical signs recognizable, like fidgeting, lack of eye contact, forgetting words, delayed speaking, speech bursts, obsessive tendency towards specific topic. Being diagnosed with high functioning autism myself, i recognize a lot of those symptoms in Villeneuve. @@agahnim0196 Then why did I just see a video of a autistic child punching themselves in the face? 🤔 Seems like people like you have co-opted the term to justify unusual personality traits? And of course to use as a defense whenever someone criticizes you-----"but I'm autistic!" 😃

That's nice that you acknowledge the native land. It makes we wonder though, if Canada has lately become very conscious of the native tribes, why does Canada continue to have such liberal immigration policies which allow ever larger numbers of non-natives to move onto native land? Have the natives been asked if they want their land to continue to become ever more populated by non-natives?

Enough of the native land acknowledgements every time you pick up the microphone. According to this logic every youtuber filming in North America would need to say this speech at the beginning of every video since all of it was native land. That's not gonna happen.

Seriously? Land acknowledgments are the least we can do. Indigenous people get so little representation as is, so if you can't handle someone taking a minute to acknowledge the land we're standing on, then that's your own problem. Also what is this constant obsession with "wokeness" just bc people are being respectful? It's one of the largest film festivals in the world, so your KZbinr comparison is a straw man that makes literally no sense

For me it is the scify version that is still tops. Even given the cheese factor, the less money and some bad dated cgi, some of the costumes. For me the scifi miniseries is still the best. This version had really bad sound and music for me. The use of grating shitty bagpipes was beyond stupid. The several parts of weird screaming chanting wasn't for my taste. The lack of character interaction and scene time. . . If you didn't read the book you don't get the full impact of Yueh's traitorous actions. He is barely in it. Remove the ceremony scene and put in the dinner scene. More interactions in made up scenes with the characters. Yet another hype disappointment.
