Not the suits. Lynch threw a hissy fit when they added the explanation of the Landsraad, the Guild et al and the history of man over the last ~10,000 years at the beginning of the film. He was so pissed that he demanded his name be removed from the film when it was re-released. This is why you will sometimes see "Dune" as directed by Alan Smithie...not David Lynch. Alan Smithie is a fictional name used for instances like these.

I thought the fade-in-and-out effect was a subtle and important means to hold our attention; especially younger members of the audience, which I was one of at the time in 1984. It acted as a perceptual and psychological form of punctuation, separating distinct points of thought, like paragraph indentation. Some complain about this, but I could tell, then and now, its purpose and how some of the audience might've gotten a bit lost without these breaks. It is also why some of its contents were wisely moved to scenes further on in the story, helpfully shortening the introduction.
