Anton Zuykov TV attempt failed. Failed what? Your expectations. Who really cares about that. The movie and the SyFy take are interpretation of a complex universe that could never achieved the scope of the books. That said, Dune (the movie) and SyFy take are light years beyond the overrated Star Wars franchise.

Princess Irullan looks very impressive. If you don't know Irulan Corrino, this is an allusion going back to Anna Comnena - the daughter of the Byzantine emperor Alexei, the first woman historian, the creator of Alexiada - the main historical source of information about the first Crusades. Actually the spice gas has nothing to do with "folding space", the Holtzman drive on the heighliners does that, the spice give the mutated navigator a kind of prescience, allowing them to plot a safe course for the heighliner through the universe.

The intro without music is so much different. One of the best soundtracks ever. Coming from a pop band makes it even more amazing. What a great film. Underrated. Misunderstood. Then ... as now, 30 years later, you can't not watch Virginia Madsen in any scene and not see the wheels spinning in her head. She knows the power of stillness and not having to 'work the room' in a scene. If only Mr. Lynch had been able to make and edit the film his way. Welcome to Hollywood. D.A.

Not the suits. Lynch threw a hissy fit when they added the explanation of the Landsraad, the Guild et al and the history of man over the last ~10,000 years at the beginning of the film. He was so pissed that he demanded his name be removed from the film when it was re-released. This is why you will sometimes see "Dune" as directed by Alan Smithie...not David Lynch. Alan Smithie is a fictional name used for instances like these.

I thought the fade-in-and-out effect was a subtle and important means to hold our attention; especially younger members of the audience, which I was one of at the time in 1984. It acted as a perceptual and psychological form of punctuation, separating distinct points of thought, like paragraph indentation. Some complain about this, but I could tell, then and now, its purpose and how some of the audience might've gotten a bit lost without these breaks. It is also why some of its contents were wisely moved to scenes further on in the story, helpfully shortening the introduction.

if there's ever a Dune RTS, this should be the onscreen advisor.

SO... irulan is Benne Gesserit, saphu is derived from the spice, and from spice, indirectly, mentats take their ability. I've watched dune twice, first the theatrical and then the 170 mins version and only now o got to know this. Each time I watch, I get the feeling Mr lynch was just overwhelmed with the amount of details of Herbert's universe, and was unable to determine what to pick and what to leave in the transposition.

Bringing the complexity of Frank Herbert's Dune to a single movie would be incredibly difficult. Read the book and you'll understand how much was left out, not necessarily in plot, but in multilayered themes of philosophy, religion, politics, language and even anthropology.

When I first read the book Dune, in the late 60s, LSD and so on was just getting its second wind, so to speak. Hence the seed idea for the book. Dune while being entertaining was a sign of those times.

@MaskedMan66 Weirdly you can still hear Irulan's prologue in the Extended Edition during the scene when Paul is studying the filmbooks.

My very fav, definitely, for ever and ever. I have read it several times and it helped me discover once and for all who was my favorite character in the Duneverse, Sheeana. Have you read it again in the last three years? Lol.

love any extra "anything" from Dune.. saw an alternate Ending.. which was WAY WAY more fitting than the original.. and about 5 min longer too.. loved this film from day one. Watch the Extended DVD now n then.. seen it... 20+ times ?? great cast, great movie.. still the benchmark for many that came after, despite the lack of CGI super computers..
