The least Warner Bros. could do is to just release it with the full IMAX aspect ratio. Then it will be on the individual's side to scale up the size of their screen at home, similar to what Zack Snyder did with his 4hr Justice League. Give us ALL the picture and we'll worry about the size of the canvas
@jakethet3206

IMAX does not necessarily equal Academy Ratio. Not all IMAX movies use the Academy Ratio like Snyder did for Justice League. Lots of IMAX movies use an aspect ratio that’s close to 16x9 (I forgot the exact ratio.)

This. I don’t expect HBO to suddenly make my tv produce 12 channels of sound. But i would love to see full image and true composition of shots. It is like someone would put “lighthouse” in wide cut version, just cuz it “fits” tv.

Sort of like CGI overdose in The Phantom Menace, it takes more than technology and visceral influence to make a movie that gives the audience a reason to care. I found no reason to care about the movie , world, and characters themselves, but did appreciate the framing, technology, and use of pacing in the movie. Just felt like the movie spent way more time telling me why I should care rather than showing me. Apparently a lot of people liked it though, so I hope the second one closes the gap a bit.

I saw Dune at a regular cinema and wanted to see it again in imax but it had already left unfortunately. Which reinforced my feelings that imax theatres should primarily show things like Dune that were made with imax in mind, or will otherwise benefit from it. A lot of modern blockbusters are just more disorienting in Imax, but I feel like imax should be it’s own thing - an event with epic films that match its scale - rather than just a bigger cinema. Hopefully imax cinemas will re-release Dune part 1 when part 2 comes out 🤞

The metaphor of shrinking down the grand canyon was genius, there is a worrying trend of people becoming more content with lesser versions of films for the sake of convenience. There is so much thought and effort that goes into the production of these bigger budget films, heck, even from the few student films I've done I can tell you that the audio designers especially go into excruciating detail with their work. When people go out and watch these films through a lesser medium, well, you may as well have not watched it at all because you simply are not watching what was created, you're watching a downgrade, a demake, a different film entirely. Obviously not everyone has access to the likes of IMAX, I myself am one of the unlucky few to not have any such cinemas anywhere near me, but to be honest, I'd much rather not watch the movie at all than watch a completely inferior one.

People in general have always been searching for convinience unless it come to thing they care about. Like you would be perfectly content with a generic car and a reasonable priced apartment but have high standard for film. But somebody else have the opposite priorities. The problem comes when everything is forced to bow down to mediocrity to fulfill the economical needs: optimising the shit out of ROIs.
@oldoldmeme
@oldoldmeme 2 жыл бұрын
@@mdd4296 that's a fair point, it's just a shame that the seemingly vast majority don't care for art in the same way that most of us watching this video do. Personally I feel that if you don't take in a piece of art the way it was originally intended, you are simply not consuming that same piece of art, so artists, or at least their teams, should do everything in their power to distribute their work as faithfully as possible.

So what you're saying is the filmmakers set themselves up to fail from the get go? That mentality, "we made this product with this VERY SPECIFIC method of interaction in mind, and don't really care about or even balk at the thought of people who want to interact with our product in any way other than the one method," it's defeatist and shouldn't be encouraged. I'll analogize it for simplicity, video games are developed for the lowest common denominator in hardware specs, that's why a lot of AAA titles are never more complicated than your standard 16-button and 2 analog stick controllers can support, also why graphic design is never all that far apart between systems. Until IMAX grade displays and sound systems are more common in every day housing, making movies that will only work if seen on those displays and heard with those sound systems is not something to be praised. Oh, and INB4 people start getting on my case for hating the movie, I first watched it through streaming on my living room TV of 55" at 1080p, I loved it so much that I proceeded to buy and read the books, which only increased my admiration of Frank Herbert's work.

A surprising middle ground I found was VR. I saw dune recently again at home on my VR headset and it’s pretty good. Theater is still the best place for me personally to watch it. But I got about say 80% off the theater experience just with the headset on. The screen was about the same as a mid to average sized theater screen. (Definitely not IMAX) the picture quality was at worst standard HD. The sound was amazing. And with headsets improving all the time I imagine some people could just use them for a full on imax experience eventually. Only thing missing will be be crowd reaction. And that is probably irreplaceable.

Well, Villeneuve cannot blame anyone but himself. He wanted to impress by using the best technology, which is always to a degree an externalizing of excellence. He knew this would make it inherently less impressive and less matching the original format and that IMAX showing would be time limited. He would also have to know that the simultaneous release wouldn't have made that much of a difference because people who want to watch it in IMAX would anyway, and they would probably also have learned quickly that there is a difference. So basically this is not a tragical loss, but a deliberate niche strategy chosen. And it is a pschological deception, because it is not so much that the regular format degrades the movie, but that the IMAX format was the 'extra booster' beyond the usual. Although if it is unique enough, maybe it makes a comeback at some point? Dunno how unthinkable that would be for the (IMAX) cinema business. - But if high tech movie culture is fixated on new content all the time, then that nature serves it right. This is like a spiritual lesson about humanity and technology.

And Vellineuve said he can't imagine the film in any other format than Atmos - from a sound perspective. So, visually he dreamt it for IMAX, but sound-wise, Atmos was always his go-to. The IMAX 12-track comes close, but there's something more naturalistic and dynamic about the Atmos mix vs the IMAX 12-track

Ima a frustrated mad book reader because I FINALLY could LIVE the DUNE novel with this film but all of the Game of Thrones nitty gritty politics and interpersonal story arcs were cut/hinted at and then the length was cut still (many scenes were filmed but dropped) for movie theater showing times so it ended on a hanging unfullfilling confusing note that works when you can JUST TURN THE PAGE or watch the next episode ie Syfy Dune series, it should have ended on Paul swearing to his mother he couldn't leave due to already being affected addicted to the spice, a freak and seeking revenge for his father's death then facing the worm THE.END and the next movie becomes his facing becoming one with the Fremen and if Shahalud wills a Third movie covering Dune Messiah his failings and the jihad in his name. For me it's like many shakespeare plays are done and this one is a good one but never definitive vs the book, rather LISTEN to the audiobooks my IMAGINATION is better than films.

I disagree tbh. I think enough of the politics was included, it was just delivered more visually compared to through dialogue, which I didn't mind. I would've maybe liked one scene between Jessica and yueh, but that's all. But I thought the ending was perfect. It makes more sense to me to end with Paul finding his determination. As the movie says, Paul has to die for the kwisatz haderach to rise, and jamis' death is the marker for that. He has killed now, and the movie finishes after Paul has undergone a great change. When they walk off, it's clear that they're headed to the sietch. And the next movie can start by welcoming Paul into the fremen community, an ominous sign for how that movie will end

@@klyanadkmorr fair enough, if it doesn't match your vision that's understandable. I would've liked a street scene of arrakeen too, but at the same time I liked the feeling of distance it created, between the atreides and the people. They weren't there for the citizens, they were there out of necessity, and I think Denis chose to emphasise that. I can see Denis contrasting the lifelessness of his version of arrakeen (a city oppressed) with the freedom and life of the sietch communities in the sequel. The dinner scene is one of my favourite scenes in the book but I understand why it was cut for the adaptation. I dint think they actually ended up filming it, from what I've read. Is a bummer though. But genuinely i think Denis made all the right cuts/changes, for his specific vision.

Never have i seen a better indictment of directors like Villeneuve's "no directors cuts" policy. This is proof that Dune part One does not work, edited as it is. The home release needed an extra 30 minutes of all cut material (dinner scene, yueh and jessica, the baron taunting Leto with the fingers and the note, more Arrakeen scenes, etc) and reedit them into a "whosgunnadoit" (as opposed to a traditional whodunnit) revolving around Leto. The first part needs a complete reedit into a reverse betrayal/murder mystery that ends in exactly the same way as the theatrical version did. Then thr second part is the vengeance/war film. Also, the world doesnt work if you dont mention the Butlerian Jihad and thereby explain, subconsciously, to your audience, that the world regressed in technology willingly. So many more things couldve solved this issue, but those are the main ones. You really dont need more than three hours and a rethinking of pacing and structure to achieve it

This happens in many instances of the film where it tries to establish enormous clashes of scale only to reduce those moments to sheer farce. A very tedious film that took all of me to sit through to the end.

Making films just for IMAX is just plain stupid. There are too few IMAX screens. Make films for cinema. Make sound so that dialog is clear. Screw the number of audio channels - make a good film!

I have a different perspective. Accessibility and longevity. Accessibility is obvious. There are many people that cannot spend the extra cash on a imax experience. From the moment you make a movie be a lesser version of itself on a non-imax system, you are aggravating the access to culture by class problem. Longevity I think is also obvious. If a movie doesn't work on a small screen, it won't survive the moment it leaves theaters. After that people will only be able to watch it on their TVs or if they are lucky and a theater near them to show it again. If a director makes a movie thinking only on the big screen and completely ignores that it will be also on TVs to the point that it stops working, they are sacrificing an important part of that movie's lifespan. All that doesn't mean the director can't choose to sacrifice those stuff if they want and have a specific vision, but it shouldn't be on the viewer's shoulders to watch "the correct version" or not bring able to speak of the whole movie, as the movie viewed on my TV is still the movie and if it doesn't work than, it's a problem of the movie.

I disagree. Why would you say every art must be mediocre to be optimized for convenience and compatibility like smartphone screens? Rather than building a tall, aw-inspiring monument like the eiffel tower, we should spend to money to build many small versions all over the world, so that people who cannot afford to go to Paris have a mediocre, insignificant tower that nobody will care about in the first place, because it is so small and insignificant?
@TheLucasdms

@@felixschweigkofler7630 what I mean is that the burden to watch the "best version" shouldn't be put into the viewer. When the film maker decides to do something like Dune that is supposed to be viewed in IMax, they have to understand they are sacrificing the experience for the largest portion of the viewers that will only watch it on lesser theatres rooms or even their TVs, and not complaint that not everyone is paying the expensive IMax tickets to "watch it properly". Therefore, it is a valid criticism that the movie doesn't work as well on the other screens. Not that they should make it less, but they shouldn't only focus on the IMax experience unless they are completely ok with sacrificing the long term life of the movie.

@@TheLucasdms You are working under the assumption that they are not ok with "sacrificing the long term life of the movie". It was never indivated that villeneuve wasn't aware of it and accepted as price for making an artistic masterpiece. In non-IMAX cinemas it was still good and nobody can expect him to reduce it so far that it can be watched anywhere. Furthermore, this Dune will live on in the people that have seen it and the overwhelming impression might lead to more of such movies being made. Tolkien also "sacrificed the long term life of his books" by writing in such a unique style that many people find unreadable, but nevertheless his work lives on.
@TheLucasdms

@@felixschweigkofler7630 He has stated his dissatisfaction with people watching it in non IMax rooms, as if that is the main way it was supposed to be watched, and that's the parameter it should be evaluated. What I was trying to say with my comment is that is the wrong take. The normal movie theater version and even the TV version of the movie are valid experiences to be criticized upon, as those are the ones that will reach most people and will live on after it leaves the cinemas. Dune still works wonderfully even if I was to watch it through my phone, but if it didn't and it was only a good experience through IMax, that would be a more than valid criticism.

I've been listening to the soundtrack for a long time before it was available in my country's theaters. After seeing it in a Dolby Atmos theater recently, I can tell you that the soundtrack just sounds so DIFFERENT in the theater. Literally the same specific music cues, like the orchestral blast when Paul looks up at the Reverend Mother in defiance, sounds extremely different. Almost like all non-theater sources of the soundtrack were, compressed or squished, losing all the detail.

I've seen Dune 3 times, twice in Imax, and once on HBO (but streamed in a private, miniature theater). Even though the latter was technically still a theater, the difference was palpable. Not only just for the trimmed down shots, but the perspective from viewing the imax screen in the audience. It really did reshape how the movie 'felt' to watch. It is a shame that the experience won't be the same at home. I hope the blu ray/4k releases at least have some aspect ratio options, to at least get the full picture, if not at the full size. (Either way I'll be watching it at home many times, I loved this movie)
