VIDEO NOTE: First, I apologize about the pronunciation. We did some research into it and I just got the wrong impression about how it was said. Kind of sucks because I really did try to find the correct way he says it, but now realizing I probably should start learning some French 😂 anyways, thanks for being patient with an English speaker such as myself and I'll definitely revert to traditional French pronunciation in the future. See below where we got a bit confused 🥲 To clarify, did some research into pronunciation for Villeneuve. Traditional French is a silent "e" but then I watched this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnaqpHmsl6mge9ksi=-_mQleedUBYap831 The latter half there is an "eh" or "ay" he adds. I try and go for the way our specific subject says the name. I also could have misunderstood the over annunciation of the "v" in the word, if so my bad! I'll stick with the traditional French pronunciation in the future. My bad but also just wanted to let everyone know we did try and research it, just maybe tried a bit too hard on it 😂 Slightly frustrating to have this distract from a cool story about a cool director. Appreciate everyone watching!

@K.C-2049 I feel like an outcast because I thought Oppenheimer missed big time on the pacing, some of the parts before the bomb were rushed way too much, and since the test itself was so hype, the whole third act after the test felt like it overstayed its welcome. I think Interstellar is a much better movie. With Villeneuve on the other hand, I've only seen BR2049 and the Dune movies, but they've all been awesome. I don't pretend to be a film kid so Villeneuve impresses me because I think he's the first director whose work I think I could recognize if someone gave me a blind viewing.

The whole atmosphere I felt such a strong and emendate connection with. Made me feel very strange actually. It felt so familiar that I almost felt as though I had worked on it in a past life or something. I’m not one to believe in such things but that’s how it felt. I’m an artist/designer. Ive invested my whole being into this lifestyle. Some of the concepts and imagery are so similar to actual thoughts and visuals I’ve had it kinda scared me. Like “omg there it is! There’s that vision I’ve been chasing in my mind but have thus far been unable to grasp.” The films just resonated so deeply with my soul for whatever reason. Anyone else have a similar relationship with these films?

For me, as a French Canadian myself, it was the pronunciation of Villeneuve that was problematic. 😅 Not going to criticize, but inform, haha! He added an "é" or "ay" sound at the of his last name, which shouldn't be the case. The "eu" phoneme in the middle is unique to French, like "th" is to English, if you want. It's closer to "eh", but not quite; a little higher. So the closest I can come phonetically while writing it down for an English-speaking audiance is this : "De-nee Vil-nev". I tried it using Google Translate's Listen button and it's pretty close.

Villeneuve has become one of my favorite directors -- and straight up my _favorite_ sci fi film director -- in just a few years. Arrival was the first film of his I saw, and it was instantly one of my favorite sci-fi movies. As much as I love Star Wars and the like, their plots are pretty straightforward. I love DENSE films. And Arrival fulfilled that desire. Then Dune came out, and again, I thought "YES. THIS is the kind of sci-fi I want to see." Just as dense, just as expansive, just as visually breathtaking. Then, I just saw Dune Part 2 yesterday. I would put that film on the same shelf as LOTR. No joke. It is a MASTERPIECE. I'm pretty sure Villeneuve's sci-fi movies will be the only ones I ever rate 6 stars out of 5. I also love how you pointed out that Herbert was kind of upset that readers thought Paul is the hero. I have never heard before that he said that, but it makes perfect sense to me. From when I read the first book, I saw that it was probably going to be a tale of a Chosen One gone bad. A will-he-won't-he story, watching him walk the tightrope of dictator/god vs humble hero. When I saw the movies, I LOVED that I could tell that Villeneuve had picked up on that too, and was NOT portraying Paul as a straight Chosen One hero. It's brilliant.

And I wonder if it's because his movies are brilliant but under perform for being slower and longer. Even though that's part of what makes it so good.

Dune 2 is a masterpiece
@3choblast3r410 ай бұрын
@@poindextertunes I've loved every Villeneuve movie, so far, they've all been masterpieces. I personnaly still haven't seen Dune2. But I have noticed that most people that are disappointed are disappointed due to the changes with Chani. So that kinda confirms for me that I will also be disappointed with that. But outside of Chani and changes from the book that I might not like. I have no doubt it's a masterpiece of a movie. Just maybe not as good of an apdation as it could have been. And I'm 99% certain that's purely because some tards wrote "this is a white saviour" movie about the first one so they needed a strong women of color to be a bossgurl and go against the prophecy, be an "independent thinker" Which is dumb, because Chani is madly in love with Paul. The man she loves, fits perfectly in her people's messiah prophecy. She'd be the one that would most easily believe and support the prophecy. She'd be his most loyal and obsessed follower. Not the one that would stand up and question the prophecy. Think about it, men or women. When we are in love we tend to ignore all the red flags. But now .. Chani has to be "strong and independent." I get setting up Dune Messiah but they should have chosen another character to be the scepitcal one. It's really bad that it's Chani of all people.
@Largentina.9 ай бұрын
@3choblast3r4He didnt make Chani the protagonist. He made it so its more clear that Paul is not a good guy. The reason he did this is because Frank Herbert was upset that people didn't get that message from the original book. Which is why he made Messiah in the first place. He in no way mad Chani the main character.
@3choblast3r49 ай бұрын
@Largentina. he says he made Chani the main protagonist in interviews. I've still not seen the second movie. But people will always love a sympathetic villain or boy turned evil dictator. The same way the joker wasn't supposed to be someone people idolized, but they still did. Not to mention Chani is the WORST possibke choice to oppose Paul. She's in love with him ffs. People are even more blind to red flags when they are in love. But she's just so special, strong and independent .. lol

I've been a fan ever since watching BLADERUNNER 2049 (I still regret not catching it in cinemas when it first came out). I hope he directs films based off Frank Herberts' other books outside of Dune (Hellstrom's Hive, The Dosadi Experiment, etc). Hell, maybe even delve into the horror genre as well. Either way, I'm on board with whatever he does next!

I love Denis's pre-sci-fi era movies better, since I'm more interested in personal, intimate stories of human beings rather than in futuristic dystopia or universe/mega-cosmos scale stories. Anyway, I love both sides of his art.

I respect anyone who goes into the world of sci-fi cinema. Sci-fi is where the dreamers go. Villeneuve, in four science fiction films, can join the ranks of the best sci-fi directors of all time, names like Spielberg, Scott, Kubrick, Cameron, Nolan and Verheoven.

After being in a Hollywood woke trope driven cinematic desert. Who would have thought a sequel movie about a desert plant would be an oasis for escapism. This movie was amazing!!! Well acted, great visuals and not one blatantly obvious woke trope.😁 I am reinvigorated with hope that the art of storytelling is still alive. If I could send a letter of thanks to Denis Villeneuve I would. He is an absolute example of an individual who still sees film making as an art and not a cash grab. After watching your episode I now see similarities to Denis Villeneuve and Miyamoto Musashi. Particularly Musashi lesson. “For men who want to learn my strategy, this is the Way: Do not think dishonestly. The Way is in training. Become acquainted with every art. Know the Ways of all professions. Distinguish between gain and loss in world matters. Perceive those things which cannot be seen. Pay attention even to trifles. Do nothing useless.” Great episode Sir, very educating. Because of your episode I see how Denis Villeneuve has correctly allowed each life experience shape him into the storyteller he is today. Thank you for this perspective.😁

We did it based on this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnaqpHmsl6mge9ksi=-_mQleedUBYap831 Latter half he adds an "eh" or "ay" and I really try to find examples of how the specific person says their name. Especially since we bounce around languages so much. But it turns out I may have misunderstood the over annunciation of the "v" in this. In any sense, my bad I'll just use the traditional French pronunciation of it in the future
@thuryn.mitchell10 ай бұрын
@@FrameVoyager i checked the video, in those two final examples sounds like he was adding another word right after, resulting in a linked pronounciation but the edit is real fast and cut. As a french Canadian i can assure you Denis would NEVER pronounce his name Villeneuv-ayh, its just not in our language. Ville is like drill, try vill. Neuve is harder cause you dont have the equivalent in english. Try listening to some french interviews with him, or google translate if youre willing to pursue and finalize the matter 😉

@@FrameVoyager "Neuve" is like "nov" of the last Russian Royal family, the Romanov, plus a very little "euhh" (not é). So I sounds like "VilleNov.euhh". But as he said, so your content was good, Denis would never mind about how you pronounce his name.

BR2049 was brilliant, don't forget the original was considered a box office flop as well. It pisses me off that the way it gets talked about suggests it failed because it was bad rather than the fact that audiences are mostly thick as shit

Technical suggestion: use a film grain overlay on screen mode rather than a noise filter (which still leads to some KZbin artefacting) thanks for the video though
@FrameVoyager10 ай бұрын
For which part? Some of the artifacting your might see if because a lot of the time we can't always source high quality videos or photos. So we smooth them out with film grain which tends to look a lot more pleasing than digital artifacting.
@jonnowocky817910 ай бұрын
@@FrameVoyager to be more constructive sorry: I find the noise from a straight noise plugin sometimes tends to ‘dance’ excessively in flat areas and gather around edges in a sort of busy, diffusing manner, especially if the picture is going through a TV and its inherent image enhancement software. I have everything disabled on mine but it still reacts to it more noticeably than an apple screen for example. I’ve noticed even a few recent Netflix shows and films where they’ve employed VST noise as visual ‘glue’ and to combat compression, but where the results are artificially busy because the noise is calculated randomly per frame, and so looks ‘detached’ from the image. I do some editing and found the best solution was ‘emulsion 4k grain overlays’. Not only does overlaying this produce a much more pleasing and diffuse effect, but it makes rendering 10x faster, noise was always killing my export times prior. I bought a pack from them a while ago and I can now always find the correct amount and I’ve probably saved a couple weeks of my life starting at an export bar…thanks again for the video btw

@@jonnowocky8179 ah, fair points. I actually use film convert for the film emulation process in the videos. I might need to just adjust some settings on it to tone it down a bit. Now, for the CRT tv effects? That's actually real CRT TV's I've been recording on 😅
