Actually, the guy who plays the Harkonnen mentat in the Dune 2000 mission briefings, Robert Carin, was a much better Piter deVries. It says in the books that Piter had a sweet, musical voice. His portrayal literally gives me chills. Brad Dourif has a harsh, grating voice. They should have hired Carin for the movie. I know Dourif is a much bigger name, but sometimes lesser known actors really are better.

Yes in the new books he was a clone or a gona of the original who was killed attempting to assassinate Paul as he was being born and he killed the emperor's first wife and mother of irulan who witnessed the events , he also used to take so much spice that he had visions of the future one included the fall of house harkonnen and the other alternative was a harkonnen on the imperial throne ( I think )
