Dune is the science fiction equivalent of The Lord of the Rings. It is one of the pillars of the genre and inspired many beloved works, such as Star Wars, over the years. It is incredibly dense and rich with details that even this movie barely glosses over. The reason adaptations are so difficult is that there is a great deal of internal monologuing that happens which doesn't always translate well to screen. This movie did a fine job of doing the first half of the first of 15 books, thus part 1.

Yeah exactly, its always interesting seeing reactors who know nothing about it. Many comment on the similarities to other science fiction, especially Star Wars, not knowing the original novel heavily inspired those more well known properties. I'm sure it'd probably seem somewhat less original and groundbreaking than the original book really was, since Dune has been so liberally borrowed from in genre fiction since its release in 1965. It's also funny seeing how many people see Paul as a straightforward hero on a straightforward hero's journey if they've just seen this movie, although it does leave hints that his future isn't quite so glamorous.

Watching the trailer for part 2, I was thinking this could be like LOTR. You can still watch LOTR after 20 years and there's no fantasy film like it. They did as much without CGI as possible, and the CGI they used was with good taste. It still doesn't look horribly dated. Now with Dune it looks like everything comes together, the actors, a director with passion, vision and mastery, and movie technology.

I think one of my favorite lines and deliveries in this film is, "I recognize your footsteps, Old Man." Clearly in the moment, we think Paul is just referring to Gurney because of their conversation during the sparing practice, but from the novel, we know that the Fremen refer to the largest of the sandworms as the Old Man of the Desert.

Time coded comments (Part 1): [02:30] Thufir Hawat is a mentat. Essentially a human computer. The rolling of the eyes is just a visual way of showing that he has a special way of remembering and calculating things. [05:18] Yeah, he sounds kinda like Thanos, doesn't he? [13:55] There's some debate about what this spider creature is. I think it is a person the Harkonnens are torturing. Later in the film Dr. Yueh says his wife was being torn apart and put back together over and over again. I think this is what was happening to his wife. It is even possible that this IS his wife. [14:50] If you could float around like the Baron, and not worry about tripping on your own clothes, would you wear a dress that long? (Of course, I'm sure it wouldn't be a creepy one like the Baron is wearing...) [15:33] The "dragonflies" are called "ornithopters". How they look and fly is exactly how they are described in the books. [18:05] The film doesn't go into detail about the Bene Gesserit. I suspect this was done because a tv series "Dune: The Sisterhood" was in the works. AFAIK they haven't given an official release date, but I've seen 2024 tossed around. The closest real-world analog to the Bene Gesserit is the Society of Jesus (Jesuit priests). They say they only exist to serve. The truth is they manipulate politics, religion, and even human genetics to further their plans. Paul is an unwanted mutant in their eugenics program. They've been arranging marriages/births to produce a person who can see all of space and time. Jessica was ordered to have a daughter. But Jessica disobeyed because Leto wanted a son. The Bene Gesserit wanted someone they could control, but Paul's ability to see all possible futures allowed him to evade the Sisterhood's manipulations. [22:01] I suspect that, in this film, Dr. Yueh has sensors implanted in his fingers. In the book, he uses medical devices. [34:50] Kristoff: "I'm gonna tell Maple about Duncan Idaho." Anna: "Don't you dare!" [36:29] Don't be too hard on Dr. Yueh. The film only hints at what actually happened. Yueh is a Suk doctor, given supposedly unbreakable condition so that he can not harm anyone. The Baron abducted his wife, and used her torture to psychologically break Dr. Yueh. The torture probably lasted years, if not decades (a regular diet of spice can extend a person's life 3 times normal. E.g., 300 years instead of 100) [40:07] They didn't use Voice for several reasons: 1. The Fremen have a certain amount of resistance to Voice 2. The whole point of finding the Fremen was to make them allies. That wouldn't happen if the Fremen realized they were being manipulated. 3. Voice isn't magic; its a skill. You first have to "read" a person before you can use Voice on them. Jessica had never met any of the Fremen, and Paul had only met Stilgar briefly. 4. It was dark. Paul and Jessica had no idea how many Fremen were out there. They might have been able to control Stilgar, but there were others who might not be controlled. Jessica and Paul would have been killed instantly if the Fremen noticed any "witchcraft". And to be safe, they'd pour their body's water on the sand so that it wouldn't contaminate the tribe. 5. It is very difficult to control groups of people with Voice. Later in the story, after living for years among the Fremen, Paul was still very careful about using Voice on groups of Fremen. It is a LOT safer to sway Fremen with logic and reason. [40:54] Paul has only seen these people in visions of possible futures. Paul had visions of being taught by Jamis. But something happened (a gust of wind, a different word spoken, etc.) that drove the present into the future where Paul kills Jamis.

As for 13:55, I think it has to do with the Tleilaxan genetic engineers who ended up creating Duncan the ghoul. Baron likes to surround himself with expensive oddities.
@axebeard6085
@axebeard6085 Жыл бұрын
@@ivka4762 I think that would depend on the method of alteration. Do the axolotl tanks only grow things, or can they alter existing organisms. If the changes aren't done in axolotl tanks, were they done with mutagenic agents, and are those agents only known to the Tleilaxu? The thing that leaves me with doubt is Dr. Yueh's description of what is happening to his wife. I don't have my copy of Dune ATM, but I recall something along the lines of "they're taking her apart". To me, that suggests that some form of surgery is involved in the process. There is a valid argument for the "taking apart" to mean that her DNA is being taken apart and put back together again. Unfortunately, we'll never know what Frank Herbert meant with that statement. What I am certain of is that the spider-thing was added to give a subtle clue at how vile the Harkonnens are.

But something happened (a gust of wind, a different word spoken, etc.) that drove the present into the future where Paul kills Jamis. You also have to look at it between Paul's idea of teaching the ways of the desert, and the actual way they are taught the ways of the desert. For all we know and are shown in the movie, jamis only exists at this point, we know nothing afterwards, so was this paul's mental interpretation of what jamis was really going to teach him

Dune is possible one of the greatest sci-fi epics ever written. The book series is so intricate and involved that it is beautiful to see a studio give it the treatment it deserves. One thing I personally love is the use of smaller character actors in small, yet meaningful roles. A prime example is Jamis, the actor (Babs Olusanmokun) I first saw in Too Old to Die Young, and remember thinking he would be an epic stoic companion in a film... and here he is, being the key to Paul's evolution.

The Bene Dessert had a programme of seeding myths, legends and religions everywhere they went, so that if one of their sisterhood was in need, or when they finished their breeding programme and were ready to reveal their Kwisatz Haderach to the the universe, they could manipulate the populations to accept them via those preexisting dogmas. They called it the "Missionaria Protectiva". That's why, when the Atreides went to Arrakis, the population there were already primed to see Paul as their Messiah, the "Lisan al Gaib".

The thing about Yueh is that he’s actually really underdeveloped in the movie compared to to book. In the movie, he just seems like an idiot that thought the Harkonnens wouldn’t kill his wife if he betrayed the Atreides, though in the book it’s more nuanced. In the book, Dr. Yueh knew his wife was already dead and (as well as the Atreides which he served) knew that they were walking right into a trap. Yueh knew that he could only kill the evil Harkonnen Baron (that killed Yuen’s wife) if Harkonnen got close to Duke Leto, and Yueh knew that Harkonnen would only get close to Duke Leto if Harkonnen was absolutely certain of his victory. Had Yueh not intervened, there would be no chance of killing the Harkonnen Baron tyrant. I fucking love Dr. Yueh

It's good to feel bad about the death of Jamis. It's a very tragic event. Given the visions Paul had, he was very likely a potential friend and mentor for Paul, but something small was missed somewhere, and that future became impossible. I love the scene at 20:39 because it's so layered. Paul claims to recognize the old man's footsteps and most people think he's talking about Gurney Halleck but it's a double entendre, since the Fremen call the worms "Shai-Hulud", something akin to "old man from the desert". It is also a callback to when Paul is training with Gurney after Duncan's departure, where he says "I could tell it was you from your footsteps" and later taunts him by calling him "old man. A lot of people have also missed Gurney appearing seemingly out of thin hair, you don't see him approach Paul while he's hallucinating, adding to the eerie and paranormal experience of the hallucination. Denis is a master at his craft and I will never stop singing his praises.

Where you said "all they have to do is whip out the voice"...in the novel Jessica analyzes Stilgar's vocal patterns and imprints him almost immediately. She knows she could disable him with a word, but she also knows if she did that she would humiliate and cow him in front of his men, and that would weaken him, and they needed his respect to be accepted by the Fremen. So she decides not to.

Some details were omitted, but that's unavoidable when adapting such a lore-heavy book. As to give you some info on the lore and politics of the Duniverse, so it becomes a bit more clear: You have 4 major powerblocks in this universe: 1)The Emperor (and his army, the Sardaukar) 2)The Landsraad, consisting of a dozen Great Houses (and many Minor Houses, all vying for power). Think Game-of-Thrones here, but in sci-fi setting. ;-) 3)The Bene Gesserit; a semi-religious Order of women whom have certain powers (like the Voice, or being a Truthsayer, and some others not shown yet) and exert a lot of behind-the-scenes influence, but mostly stay low-profile 4) The Guild Navigators and CHOAM; a strong mercantile power, with a monopoly on spacetravel It was more or less explained in the beginnings when Paul talked with his dad on Caladan: House Atreides is a growing power, politically and military, and the Emperor feels threatened. But he can't directly attack the House, because otherwise the Landsraad (the ensemble of Great Houses) will turn against him. As said, they each constitute a "big power" in this Duniverse. So the Landsraad and the Emperor keep each other in check, as it were. Meanwhile, the Bene Gesserit are working from the shadows, on both sides - they primarily are concerned with their own plans and devices, to create the Kwizatsh Haderach. They manipulate from the shadows and actually form the third great power in this universe, but seldom show it openly. They also exert power by political marriages, or become concubines for political advantages - which is why Jessica wasn't married to Leto, though it was done to benefit him and House Atreides, not herself or the Sisterhood. The fourth independent power, which is hardly touched upon in this first part of the movie, is the Spacing Guild and CHOAM. They're like a huge mercantile power, and the Guild Navigators are the only ones able to move/teleport (technically folding space-time) between planets, so without them, there would be no viable interstellar Imperium. Which make them essential and an enormous powerhouse as well - though, of course... they are and remain dependent on the Spice. That's why: whom controls Arrakis, controls the Empire. So the Emperor can't directly attack a Great House like Artreides, or he risks all-out war with the Landsraad, consisting of the other Great Houses. Instead, he uses an indirect attack, with and through the Harkonnens - who want their fiefplanet back with all the Spice - doing the grunt work for him. The emperor knows they will be easily instigated that way, certainly because the Atreides and Harkonnen already have a centuries-old feud going on between them. It's a sort of proxy war, thus. He does help the Harkonnen to make sure they'll win - hence why he sends a few battalions of Sardaukar, his elite troops. But no-one (especially the Landsraad) may know about that. (That's also why they killed Liet, because she was going to expose the Emperor's meddling). Also, some details one might have missed in the movie: About the time in which the story plays: in the beginning of the movie they show it's the year 10191, but this is not 10191 AD, it's 10191 AG. AG (After Guild - when the Spice Guild was made and started exploring the stars), and BG (Before Guild) are the iterations used and the lore in the books gives some indication as how that relates to our AD (Anno Domini). The most precise date - with a high level of accuracy - is that the first Dune novel which is set in 10,191 AG, corresponds approximately to 23,148 AD. It is mentioned the "space age" takes place in 11,000 BG, and assuming this would mean it began in 1957 AD as this is when the first satellite, Sputnik, was launched, we can rebuild the whole timeline to our AD. So if you add the year 11,000 BG to 10,191 AG you’re left with a time span of 21,191 years. So if you add 21,191 years to 1957 AD, you’re left with 23,148 AD as the most likely date. Quite some time! Most casual watchers of the movie think it's almost 10000 years in the future, but it's actually more than twice as much! Now...as far as the melee fights and old/new tech are concerned, it's important to realize that in the Duniverse, while there is very high-tech at CERTAIN aspects, others are low tech (which gives the retro-feeling of the movie) but with a reason. It may seem strange at first sight, but note, however, that this has an in-story explanation, namely: thousands of years ago, there was a rebellion against "thinking machines" (AI) called the Butlerian Jihad. Humanity won (barely), but since that time there is a very strong taboo on creating anything resembling robots or AI, and humanity started to develop their own powers (aided by the melange/spice), such as Mentats (basically human supercomputers). This is the reason you don't see any highly developed robots, AI or even computers in this world. This mix of old and new tech is a defining, historically explained element of the Duniverse; it's part of the worldbuilding and lore. Now, specifically about the melee combat: maybe you missed it, but they explained the shields in that fighting scene; they said "the slow sword can penetrate it". This is a hint that ALL objects with high kinetic energy are stopped dead in their tracks when hitting the shield, but SLOW objects can penetrate it. Meaning: ALL of our "modern" warfare weapons would largely become obsolete: machine-guns and all fast moving shells/bullets etc. become useless, but swords and knifes that are SLOWLY moved can still reach a target through the shields. Making the use of swords and knifes, after thousands of years, the dominant way of fighting once again. It's actually a cool twist. That's all I'm going to say about it, because any more would get you into spoiler territory for part 2! ;-) Hope that made things more clear!

Yes, it's adapted from a book. Dune is one of the great classic science fiction novels. There would be no Star Wars without it. I think it's interesting that they changed the Voice in the movie. In the books, it's more subtle suggestion and manipulation, and in the movie it's more aggressive and emphasised with effects. I suspect it's because it would seem too much like the Force in the Star Wars movies. Ironic that Dune did it first, but Star Wars gets to be the defining example of it, so that the original has to change so as not to appear to be the copy.

The Dune Universe spans 30,000 years . If done right if any universe deserves to have a cinematic universe it's Dune. I just hope that Denis will be a part of this. But I believe Denis must have a part in this universe because he knows these books. I don't care if he directs or has creative control .

I think Denis has made a good choice only doing Dune and Dune Messiah. I would love for him to go all the way. But God Emperor of Dune is hard to make a version of that will appeal to the mainstream audience. Leto II has such a cool story, but how people are it is not the time. Just the idea of making a tragic love story between an immortal human/worm hybrid and a genderswapped clone of his best friend. If you pitched that idea to an investor they would think you have been to one to many cocaine orgies in Hollywood.

The worms were more fully visible in the IMAX version. 1.43:1 aspect ration 😉 you'll see more in part 2. For example in the vision pf battle they breached the sand in the background and flailed around. Or you could see it rising and diving near the spice harvester earlier.

I give to you a quote from the Princess Eralon *A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct. This every sister of the Bene Gesserit knows. To begin your study of the life of Maud'Dib, then, take care that you first place him in his time: born in the 57th year of the Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV. And take the most special care that you locate Maud'Dib in his place: the planet Arrakis. Do not be deceived by the fact that he was born on Caladan and lived his first fifteen years there. Arrakis, the planet known as Dune, is forever his place.*

Here's what I'll say about Dr. Yueh: the Baron had his wife and was torturing her and also the Emperor would have just found another way to kill the Duke anyway. What he did helped protect Paul and his mother and also gave Leto a chance to kill the Baron and get revenge, although it was unsuccessful.

Dr. Yueh is a much more complex character in the book. The movie couldn't really do him justice, because so much of his characterization takes place in his head, as he's grappling with what he's about to do, and why. Honestly, he's not that bad of a guy, and he basically saves House Atreides. He just wasn't able to save Duke Leto. The Harkonnen and the Emperor were going to wipe them out no matter what. The Atreides forces never stood a chance and Duke Leto was going to die anyway. Dr. Yueh helped with the plan, but Dr. Yueh had his own plans and they included giving Paul and Jessica every possible chance of survival, and he tried to help Duke Leto get revenge (sadly, that failed).

Lisan al Gaib is the Fremen term for an off-world prophet or messiah. The term comes from the Arabic, "لسان," (Lisan) meaning "Tongue," and "الغيب" (al Gaib) meaning "The hidden" or "unseen". It should be noted that in context of Islam, "الغيب" (al Gaib) signifies the 'unseen dimensions of Reality', and the "tongue of the unseen" is a "prophet", and not a "foreigner".

For as intricate and detail rich as the film is, it BARELY scratches the surface of what the books contain. The 1st book (movie 1 and 2) has the appearance of a hero's journey, and also a bit of white savior story. Book 2 (movie 3) takes that story and exposes it for what it is. Frank Herbert was fond of saying that "Charismatic leaders should come with warning signs." The things people will do for a charismatic leader, the danger the represent to all... that's the story of Dune.

Lordy, there are books. Dune was written in 1965. My mom read it to me when I was nine. I still have that torn paperback, and a 25th anniversary hardcover. There are six novels by the original author, and several by his son and a collaborator that are an extended universe. You should absolutely read at least the first two, as they are planned for filming. The world building is as deep as Tolkien. Some things you should know. In the past of this timeline there was a war between humans and AI. Humans won, but it prompted a religious taboo against thinking machines. All the tech is analog, or analog-ish. The eyeball dudes are Mentats, who undergo special training to allow their brains to function at the level of a computer in some respects. The shields, beam weapons (lasguns), and the FTL drives all use something they call the Holtzman effect. If a lasgun beam intersects an active shield it can produce an explosion equivalent to a nuclear bomb. This is why warfare has reverted to sword fighting. There is also a political thing called the Great Convention. Each Major House has a cache of nuclear weapons. Use of those weapons against humans triggers in kind retaliation by every other Great House. This will (should) come up in part two. The film is actually surprisingly efficient at explaining the world in many respects.
