@@TooMuchToCareAbout2I haven’t read the books but I’m curious about what they changed and how different it is
@TooMuchToCareAbout23 ай бұрын
@mdmatt2632 Some of the major changes are: 1. Alia (Paul's sister) is supposed to be born already, and she is the one who kills the Baron. 2. Paul and Chani have a child, Leto II, who is murdered by Harkonnen and is a major turning factor in Paul's decision. 3. Gurney almost kills Jessica because he thinks she is the traitor. 4. Feyd tries to cheat in the final duel with Paul. He is not honorable and should never have been depicted that way. 5. Chani loves and supports Paul, ALWAYS! She wouldn't be upset at the end when Paul married Irulan for the throne. Jessica was concubine, and so was Chani. Both love their men completely. 6. They almost completely left out the "weirding way" which is the fighting style that Paul and Jessica teach the Fremen. 7. Paul's prescience, his ability to see the future comes on gradually, first in dreams, then waking visions, until he takes the water of life and can literally see all possible futures and outcomes. This was highly nerfed in the films and not done well. 8. Entire political and social parties were completely left out. That's just some that come to mind. There are a lot more. So many characters were either changed, sidelined, or left out completely. It's a terrible shame. The syfy series was soon much better in terms of storyline. Yes Dune II is a beautiful big budget movie but they didn't do the storyline the justice it deserves.

There still has never been a better Gaius Helen Mohiam. Or Duke Leto or Lady Jessica. When I imagine the world of Dune while reading the books the stylistic choices of ‘84 Dune still color my imagination. I STILL have not one wit of a problem with all the inner monologuing. It simply works for the film if you’ve read Hebert’s incredibly verbose writing style that includes tons of inner dialogue that only you the reader are aware of. The set construction and costumes comes from seemingly another age when there was little or no special effects and everything was painstakingly crafted by the most gifted of artisans. It just comes from another era. And yes I LOVE the new Dune films - FINALLY some real ornithopters. I love the depiction of that twisted human made into the form of a spider on Geide Prime. The 1984 movie is more directly pulled from the book, even utilizing inner monologue which is no easy task ti translate into a movie. But I think the newer versions are more practical looking in design. The books are whacky as hell in environment but are very serious in tone. Both these movies are definitely products of their time and how sci-fi was viewed in that era.

It’s not a good take to use inner monologue. It’s a bad idea here bc they didn’t know how to represent ideas with the tools of visualization. That’s what is this movie about. Cinema is not a book. It’s picture in motion. So they have very different interpretations and tools for that. Lord of the Rings understands the assignment here. The new Dune movie too.

@@nazimelmardii disagree, the scenes of their inner thoughts as whispers are extremely powerful to me in a way i found the new movies lacking. The way you stare into the eyes of the actor and listen to their thoughts is amazing. Like when paul has his waking dream and speaks to his mother, and says she is pregnant with his sister. The way they did that scene in the new movie wasnt even close to promoting the same sense of mysticism and power from paul.

Villenueve stated, “I was very excited when I learned that the book would be brought to the screen. I remember watching the movie and being very mesmerized and impressed by how David Lynch approached it. I was destabilized by some of his choices. Yeah, David Lynch has a very strong identity as a filmmaker, of course, and it bled into the - it’s a fantastic interpretation of the book. But there were some choices that were made that was very far away from my sensibility. I remember watching the movie thinking to myself, ‘Someday, someone else will do it again in the future. It will happen.’ Because I didn’t feel that he captured some of the essence of, specifically, the Fremen culture - I felt that there was some things that were missing. That’s the nature of adaptation, you know?”

Diane, It's 11:30 am, February 24th. Entering the vast dunes of Arrakis. The air is dry, a stark contrast to the misty mornings of Twin Peaks. I've traded my black coffee for a spice melange latte, and I must say, it's a revelation. The locals speak of sandworms, creatures far more daunting than Bob, yet I find a strange comfort in the endless sands. This place, Diane, it's like the Red Room but painted in shades of gold and heat. I have a feeling that 'the owls are not what they seem' might have a whole new meaning here. Keep the pie warm for me; if I'm not back by 5, start the search party. Cooper out.
