At the end of the book, lady Jessica pulls Chani aside and tells her “history will remember us as wives” she explains Ireland, who is technically Paul’s wife, will never feel tenderness or love from Paul, and she will live as “less than a concubine”. Meanwhile the ones who the great leaders, Leto I and Paul, loved in reality were the unofficial wives. Also, cool thing to notice. In the first movie Chani asks “who will our next oppressors be” and the first thing we see after she asks that is Paul waking up. They told us in the first movie what was going to happen

@@paulkellerman2603 actually not really. As Leto ii makes a point to create a whole mythology of his family and canonized his mother as a goddess figure when he becomes god emperor so ultimately even though she writes histories it's chani who wins. What an amazing continuation and experience. What really made me tear up was at the very end when Paul just accepts the holy war by saying: Lead them to paradise. "“No more terrible disaster could befall your people than for them to fall into the hands of a Hero.”"

The Harkonnen stuff isn't meant to be a big story reveal so it hit about right for you. In the books, it happens even before Paul meets the Fremen and it's more of an aspect of the worldbuidling than a plot twist. The Bene Gesserit breeding program wasn't really that focused on in the movie so the reveal feeling unimportant is a victim of not being able to adapt all of the text to screen. Think of it as setup for now rather than a "I am your father" moment.

Great reaction to a great movie. FYI: they get off sand worms by… riding them till they get tired and slow down or stop. Yeah a little anticlimactic, but realistic if nothing else. They expose the sensitive skin under the scales and that’s how they steer, I’m guessing another more bad A way of getting off is just unhooking your “controls” and possibly the worm would dive back under the sand and you could time it right and hop off maybe. Awesome that you understood the warnings of charismatic leaders that was underscored in this movie. A lot of people missed that, the tragic aspect of Paul

Crazy thing is that people who read the book back in the day would STILL often read it as a classic hero tale where the good guys win. Just adds credibility to the point that the book is trying to make about the power of a satisfying narrative and how we are conditioned to interpret it as something good, even if it's a narrative that anyone can exploit. In book 2 there's even a chapter where Paul compares himself to an "ancient emperor" when mankind shared a single world. That "emperors" name was Adolf Hitler, who himself made himself seem like a hero to those he sought to lead in order to enact his insane war.

He didn't choose the Emperor's daughter over Chani, & in the eyes of the Fremen they are actually married already since they just starting living together as a couple in the sietch one day.🙂 But legally he is not married yet in the eyes of their political system. From their point of view any lover he has is just a concubine at best, just like his mom was the Duke's concubine. (Remember in part 1 when the Duke tells Jessica he should've married her long ago? He had kept his political option of an arranged marriage open for a long time, but clearly Jessica was his only love & he regretted not just making it official because he wanted to erase even the very tiny worry she had that she could be replaced one day.) Paul manipulated the same system & offered an arranged marriage to join the houses as a peaceful resolution now that he had captured the Emperor. But it's only a legal marriage. As you will see later in the saga, he has no intention of sleeping with her ever, & he will never even consent to her carrying his child by insemination. Not only does he not care about her at all, her being the last of her family is the final punishment for the Emperor trying to end the Atreides line! Paul will also not bow to the Bene Geserit Withes' plan that he breed only with those they deem genetically ideal. He has no plans for children except with Chani, no matter what comes politically. Though only he knows it because he hasn't even trusted his mother enough to tell her all the possible futures he sees, he already has an heir for the Atreides/Harkonen line anyway: his little sister. He has already seen that she will always be by his side, understanding & supporting his choices, even when he goes against the "advice" of their mom who wants things to go the way the Bene Geserit plan, with their Messiah as their puppet. In the books, Paul describes Alia & himself as the 2 faces of a coin. On the surface different, but in reality once past that surface they are actually exactly the same. Despite him being 17 by the time his sister is born, they will actually understand & love each other fiercely. (Oh, & if I remember right, Chani is like 5 years older than Paul, which is why when she meets him & he hasn't even turned 17 yet she calls him a boy. She is decidedly putting him down because of his age.😂 Then she goes & falls in love with him. 🤣) But the real lesson of everything so far is "Why deliberately cause trouble?" If the Emperor had just let things be, House Atreides would still be popular politically because they were successful in managing their area of the empire & also doing it in a fair reasonable way, rather than over-taxing the citizens under him or threatening them. Because he was a good man that actually didn't crave power (remember him telling Paul he also hadn't wanted the burden of the dukedom & wanted to just be a pilot like an ordinary guy?) Duke Atreides actually would not have ever made a play for the throne, even though he had gained enough power & respect that he could overthrow the Emperor if he teamed up with some of the other houses. He didn't want to though, & he didn't like the idea that any house that helped him overthrow the Emperor would then have leverage to ask too much from him in return. Blind debts are not a good idea. They can be taken advantage of. Still the Emperor couldn't believe that any man didn't desire that level of power because he himself did. So paranoia won & he decided to get rid of the Atreides. So he made his downfall by the Atreides into a self-fulfilling prophecy, when they never had their eye on the throne or had ever made a move to try to gain more power than they already had in any way, good or bad. How dumb! In the coming saga installments, Paul himself will actually show what you're talking about with that dynamic of seeking power vs the humility of a real hero. From the outside, he appears to have changed, but on the inside he still doesn't want to be either Emperor or Messiah. He is forced to do it by circumstances because he sees if he just turned away completely that he just winds up dying anyway & the people of Dune never get freedom & nobody ever challenges the manipulation of the Witches , but his powers to see the future are stronger than the Bene Geserit predicted & he can see that if he lets them get their way then things will be no better for the Fremen or any other common people on any of the planets. So he takes on the mantle of power & acts as if he believes it's fine & not dangerous for someone to have that much power. He slowly subverts it, 1st attacking the influence of the Witches on politics, then while being in essence a literal god, he starts attacking the religious manipulation too. It takes a long time, but eventually Paul shows that he is in fact the hero of the story. He fights like hell for him & Chani to have a normal life, to keep their personal life & their relationships with family members as the most important thing in their life. In the end, he actually is the anti-organized religion & anti-establishment hero. He doesn't just fight the system, he becomes the system to tear it down. In tge Dune series there is actually a lot of intense bashing of how organized religion & greedy/evil politicians manipulate & use & abuse the "common" people to keep themselves in charge.

Paul was changed because he wasn't just Paul anymore. Absorbing the memories of countless dead Fremen without it changing his personality would have been silly. And given the history of the Fremen it isn't a shock that he didn't emerge a kinder, gentler, and more understanding version of himself.

I would give the Emperor and Irulan a few more minutes of screen time. Their whole part seemed rushed, and also visually too minimalistic. Why does the throne room and court of the Emperor of the Known Universe look like a corporate retreat for the board of an insurance company? There's an air of exhaustion to it that doesn't seem like a deliberate artistic choice. As flush as the budget was, I could easily imagine them beginning to feel a pinch by the time they got around to those scenes.
