I loved that short scene where she is running across the desert to Paul rocket launcher in hand, laughing, giggling as a burning ornothopter falls from the sky.
@XieRH198811 ай бұрын
Regarding your comment on Chani gradually switching sides and becoming a believer, that never really happened. She never wanted Paul to become a messiah figure and detested the idea of her people becoming radicalised by religious fervor. You can see in the final scene how she was the only Fremen who didn’t kneel before him or cheer when he ordered them to begin the holy war. All she ever really wanted was for Paul to just assimilate into the Fremen community and fight alongside them as a fellow comrade, instead of being elevated onto a pedestal and worshipped like a god.
@BucyKalman11 ай бұрын
Chani and Irulan are the only characters that do not kneel to Paul. That is not so much because they don't recognize his "divinity" (other who don't either do kneel, like the Emperor). I think it is more to make the point that Chani and Irulan are elevated to Paul's equals in the story.

I loved your analysis during the Stilgar: The Believers sections! As you mention, the film does a great job of setting things up so that you can simultaneously feel the dread of the Holy War that is coming while also celebrating and feeling the rejoicing of the Freman as their Messiah is “leading them to paradise.” And I think it’s so great because both reactions and feelings are valid and resonate, even as they are directly competing.

I agree with your point about the final battle. Everything was building up towarss this epic battle scene, and we get that 20-30 second one-shot take that reminded me of the Jon Snow one in the Battle of the Bastards, and then you cut to the throne room. I feel like we could have seen more of the battle itself. The way I saw it after walking out is as if in Return of the King after you see Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli arriving on the boats to Osgiliath, you would just cut directly to the battle being over and that shot of the ghosts entering Minas Tirith
@aidanpearce983911 ай бұрын
About the final battle, in the book Frank Herbert notoriously doesn’t describe the battles. Just, and then they fought, or something like that. But he doesn’t describe the fights, more people in a room talking about what is going on around them. So the battle we got is way more than what’s in the book. That being said I would still have loved to see more of a fight like you said. Just something to keep in mind.

the scene where Feyd-Rautha tests his knife by cutting the woman’s throat and repeatedly stabbing the other woman elicited multiple groans from our audience. it was truly disturbing. However, I will say, I think that people hyped up Feyd-Rautha to be an insane psychopath, and the movie did portray him as that but I thought he’d be more aggressive and relentless. I guess that has to do with the PG-13 rating. But hey I still think it was a great character.

I agree the Emperor is underdeveloped. I feel like Princess Irulan (the Emperor's daughter) is actually more developed (and more empowered) in the movie than in the novel. She is basically a side character in Dune, but becomes more important in the next two books. Denis anticipated a little bit her future role as being in league with the BG and an agent of the Reverend Mother. You can see how Chani and Irulan are elevated to Paul's equals when they are the only characters who do not kneel before Paul in the throne room scene. Note that Irulan never says either that she will be submissive. She says she will be a willing bride if Paul spares his father. But her dialogue with the Reverend Mother makes it clear, at least in DV's version, that Irulan is making a play to keep her House in power even when her father is dethroned. That is why I think Denis makes Irulan a more powerful and scheming character in the movie than in the book.

It is really interesting. This movie was already very long, and I agree with Sean that there aren’t really any “wasted” scenes. Everything that’s in this movie is awesome. So I can’t easily pick out things to change without adding to the runtime. I just feel like the second half of the movie skipped out on details/development for the sake of action. It’s a very minor gripe (again I loved the movie). I’m just with Sean on this also where I wish some of the scenes (how Feyd found the Fremen so quickly once he arrived, the battle to the throne room, the fight between Gurney and Rabban, etc). The issues raised here are not issues for me-as the movie has a good run time. For instance, I like that Feyd did not have more time on screen as this bully does not need any more glorification. Umm, how is part 2 not as good as part 1 when it comes to visuals and sound? There are more stunning visuals in this one, because of how much more happens. The score was also better. To each their own I guess.

I agree with you on most points except about Leto. He didn't care about the fremen, He did what he did for his family. Yes he was noble and a good man, but that doesn't change the fact that his motivations were to himself.

Appreciate how you articulated your opinion on Paul. Ive been frustrated by book readers since seeing the movie. I think most picked up on what you are saying on Paul but still cheered for him. Book readers are on a shaming campaign if you rooted for Paul to win the final fight. Seems like its partly based on whatever happens in Messiah. The attempt to ruin the experience for people of another medium is not like anything I experienced with anything else.

Yeah there’s a weird vibe. Instead of being excited the series is getting a wave of new people interested, they’re like acting like elitist…and basically spoiling what’s to come. So weird.

Funny you mentioned the last jedi. I always personally felt the problem was indeed as you said that it kinda insults you for expecting certain things but then i also feel it didn't subvert enough in some places. I remember watching it in the theater and when kylo reached out his hand and asked rey to join him I Felt kinda cheated when she declined. I was like: "wait, so we're just doing empire again not even like a reverse but just the same thing." You had the opportunity to do something different and you clearly wanted to, but you keep this the same ? That's always bothered me. But then the whole sequel trilogy could be described as missed opportunities. Then in ashoka when they had that scene about how the galaxy is this neverending cycle of repeating events i was kinda interested in seeing where it goes. Sadly with the death of Rey Stevenson i doubt they will return to this plot point. And even if they do i don't think they would ever change the foundation of how the star wars galaxy works a la Earthsea style. That would mean having to explain how the force functions and disney is never gonna go that route.

He marries princess irulan but his concubine n who he loves is chani she has his children. Marrying irulan is just for the throne he has no interest in her but she cant have kids but paul loves chani n shes his concubine during the whole time hes officially married to irulan hope Denis Villeneuve doesnt change this.

Jessica was supposed to have a girl, who would then be bred to Feyd. Their male child would have been a Kwisatz Haderach. Feyd was a candidate to be a breeder. Paul is a generation early and is lacking he genetics that would enable the Bene Gesserit to control him.

As a fan of the novels and the 2 miniseries and how much I dont like the Lynch film I came to Dune part 1 skeptical and hoping it would be great and then hoping part 2 would happen and also be great. Im very happy that we now have an adaptation that is just as epic as the novel.

The emperor plays a very small part in the book and the other families are not really explained all that much. Villeneuve worked with what he had in his hands. I agree Walken seems a bit tame though.
@CliffKarrow11 ай бұрын
They explain a lot of the politics and the landraad in the book, especially in the dinner scene which was unfortunately not in the movie. The Guild was another vector in the book that gives an extra dynamic to the politics, which was barely mentioned in the movie. The book does keep a lot of background open which I think adds to the world building.

I thought Part 1 & 2 were great, but I wasn't a big fan of the pacing at the end of the first and start of the second. It's probably not a movie problem, but that's probably just how the book was. They're both great though

As a native Hawaiian, I think the reason Dune has impacted me, more than films like Avatar for instance, because it truly reflects the effects of colonialism on our world through a grand sci-fi opera.

I loved the fight between Paul and Feyd. I think that whoever choreographed it really liked the final fight in Rob Roy. Even how it ended was really similar. I think that Villeneuve could’ve gone harder on the Harkonens by just giving them more screen time and giving them more interactions with the Fremen. In Rob Roy, the final fight felt way more tense because Cunningham had more screen time to show how much of an asshole he was. Feyd had 2 or 3 scenes in an almost 3 hour movie to hype him up. I think it is a testament to Villeneuve as a filmmaker and Butler as an actor to still have that fight be satisfying and tense.
