Hey everyone! THIS MOVIE WAS FUCKING INCREDIBLE!!!! Literally one of the BEST movies I've ever seen in my entire life! I just wanted to thank each and every one of you for clicking on this video, watching, it, and commenting! You guys are the fucking best! In the book, a kerchief worn on the head symbolizes being a married woman with child. This was of course changed in the movie as they don't have a child in this adaptation, so instead it becomes a symbol of her love for Paul. But also in the book, a kerchief worn on the arm is a signal of mourning when you lose a loved one... So Chani moving this symbol of love to her arm really illustrates her broken heart.

Dilleneuve has already said he doesn't want to adapt anything past Messiah. I wouldn't be surprised if he completely wraps up the story in the next movie. Either with or without Paul's child. Just in case it wasn't clear at the end of the movie, you hit the notch, Alia (Paul's sister) did receive all the memories of Reverent Mothers just like Jessica when she drank the Water of Life. Alia literally became conscious as a fetus, with the hundreds years worth of knowledge. So her communicating through Jessica was the real deal.

Stilgar is the saddest part of the movie for me. "They were friends, now they are followers." In the books: "I gained a great warrior but lost a great friend." You can tell he was being a bit of the fun drunk uncle that has an equal amount of wisdom and humor, memeing about Lisan al Gaib for most of it until Paul rode the worm. At the end the uncle personality is gone and he's a zealous warrior.

He didn't see the Golden Path. His conversation with Leto II is pretty explicitly about the fact that Paul never looked far enough to see it, because he saw what that future held for him and noped out too quickly. He was too concerned with his own self-image and his belief that he could still be moral in a traditional sense, despite everything he'd already done.

@@colbyboucher6391 Paul DID see the Golden Path and knew that he would have to undergo the dramatic and terrible transformation to help carry it out but he turned away from it as he felt he could not shoulder such a LONG burden and sacrifice his humanity. Thus, his son Leto II chose in his place and the rest is Dune history. I think, in a way, it was easier (maybe not even the right word) for Leto II as he had not lived a full individual adult life and did not have physical children of his own to consider. In the Dune miniseries, he's just a teenager when he accepts the sandtrout skin and begins the metamorphosis and in the books, he's even younger, he's just a child then and not even a teen yet.

Problem was, the people of Arrakeen hated Harkonnens in general, not only Rabban...but by that point it was pretty much all over. In the book the Emperor captured Rabban and had him executed and his head put on a pole outside his palace.

The light on planet harkonnen also explains why all of the harkonnen are so pale. They grew up on a planet with almost no ultra violet rays. That is also why their suits for the desert completely cover up their entire body. They would burn too severely if they were outside too long in the desert. Their suits have small fans in them to cool them off since the wind doesn't reach them.

When you see it in IMAX, look closely at Guerney’s eyes when Paul puts his signet ring on. You can tell that he is filled with pride and joy. In IMAX, because of the bigger screen and different aspect ratio, you get a much better look at what the actor’s faces are doing. Everybody in this movie brought their absolute A game. The acting is phenomenal, without exception. Both times I saw this movie, I *knew* that I was witnessing cinematic history being made.

The worm riding is pretty cool. The "ledge" he's grabbing onto is the edge of one of the worm's scales. By prying it open, he's exposing those holes (some kind of sensory organ) to sand. So the worm adjusts to try and keep that section above the sand by rotating, so it doesn't get sand in the opening, thereby ensuring the rider is on top of the worm instead of hanging off the side (which is what happens to Paul in that scene before he pries open the scale). This will also keep the worm from submerging with its rider still on. There's a very similar detail in the 80s movie and it just shows the incredible detail that Frank Herbert used when crafting this world.

FYI, when Paul was riding the worm, he used the hooks to pry up a worm scale and expose the worm's flesh to the irritating sand, This causes the worm to roll so the exposed scale is top-side, and therefore Paul doesn't get buried under the worm. The process is described in a lot more detail in the book.

Yes. In the book she is immediately infatuated with Paul after he kills Jamis. One of my favorite and most ominous parts of the book is Pauls reaction upon learning his son was killed.

They had to make her character feel angry about the situation for some reason. Give her independence vs being like a slave wife (is the feeling people would feel about it.). In the book she just knows it has to be done and accepts it. Fremen aren't as attached like we look at marriage. I love what they did with the movie overall but that and a couple other things I wish they had done - like his sister being born and killing the Baron. Then at the end in his fight it feels like he's losing but in the book he's in complete control and makes feyd look like an incompetent fool. Still though this movie is a 10/10 for me.

Some people have kind of mentioned it, but Villeneuve changed Chani’s character b/c Frank Herbert had expressed disappointment that readers of the book thought of Paul as a hero and didn’t see it as the cautionary tale he meant it to be. To better convey this, Chani was written to be a counterpoint to the believers which she wasn’t in the books. Also, they don’t mention that in the book Paul becomes responsible for Jamis’s wife and children (two sons IIRC) when he kills Jamis, and as well at the end Alia (his sister) is like 4 and freaks everyone out b/c she’s basically an adult in a little kids body with all the memories of people’s pasts

32:11 I was just surprised, that Irulan wasn’t angry at her father. Not in the “how could you do that to the Atreides” way. Irulan probably understood piting the Harkonnens and Atreides against each other was necessary. But then her father ruins everything out of petty jealousy. Not only the complete eradication of the Atreides kills the entire plan of them and the Harkonnens exhaust each other, but her father lends his personal army to the cause. With this he gives such a weapon into the hands of one of the most cruel and ambitious house, that they can use to dethrone him anytime they choose. In the mind of someone intelligent and good strategist as Irulan, this move is infuriatingly stupid and ultimately ruins their entire house. Shaddam lost everything with ONE stupid descision.

I assume what happened with Chani at the end of this movie was done as a sort of cliffhanger for a possible 3rd film - Dune Messiah. That was not how it went down in the book. After defeating Feyd-Rautha in hand-to-hand combat, Paul subjugates the emperor and claims his daughter's hand in marriage, a political union essentially making Paul emperor. But he makes it very clear to the entire room that the princess will lead a barren, isolated life, as he will never touch her. Chani would officially be called concubine, like his mother, Lady Jessica, was to his father, Leto, but in every way that mattered she would be his wife, his only love, and the mother of his children. She understood this and stood by Paul through it all. I think a number of the changes we see in Dune 1 and 2 are a result of looking back at Frank Herbert's interviews, opinions, and commentaries on the themes interwoven within the story and what he meant to convey as the author. So, this movie, while absolutely MAGNIFICENT and thus far my favorite on-screen telling of the Dune story, was not altogether faithful to the story as told in the 1st book - Dune (which I highly recommend you read). I'm definitely excited to see what they do with the 3rd movie. I'm not sure they'd be able to do justice to the 4th because of the massive CGI that would be required to tell the God Emperor of Dune story (no spoilers!), but we'll see.

In relation to how far along the prophecy the factions are (Paul/his mom vs. Bene Gesserit). The Bene Gesserit assumed Paula and Fayd were about 1 or 2 generations from the genetic breeding program getting to where they have been trying to get it for centuries. That's why the fact they didn't realize Lady Jessica (Paul's mom) was Harkonen, and that Paul was further along than he was is a little sus. If they're so cautious about their breeding program, you'd think they'd have a detailed list of everyone that works for them's pedigree.

SPOILER: The Bene Gesserit know that Jessica is a Harkonnen, the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam is literally her mother. They just didn’t tell Jessica or Duke Leto in order to ensure the bloodline merge. But Lady Jessica didn’t listen to the Reverend mother‘s request in creating a girl (Bene Gesserit can control their body to such perfection, they can even pick the gender of their child) and birthed Paul because Duke Leto wished for a son so deeply. And because Lady Jessica thought that Paul might be the Kwisatz Haderach, she trained him in the Bene Gesserit ways. He proved that he could be the one when he passed the test with the Gom Jabbar and later with the Water of Life and that‘s when the Bene Gesserit notice how dangerous Paul is, because he can see now, yet remains out of their control. What happens to him will probably be covered in Dune 3? If not, read the books or google Paul‘s fate (I recommend reading the books, I‘m not yet done with them, but they are awesome and Denis Villeneuve literally took dialogue passages from them)

The worms have basically big scales all over their bodies, and underneath the scales is soft flesh. The hooks pull the scales back and expose the flesh underneath to the sand, thereby irritating the worm. The worm then maneuvers to keep that part of its body away from the sand. That’s what allows them to steer, and keep the worm above the sand.

Re Paul's perspective: What's unclear is if Paul actually has agency, even though he's the protagonist and it's his story. It's not just his destiny that's unfolding, it's Jessica's and Stilgar's and even Gurney's, since his reveal of the nuclear arsenal is what helps turn the tide. Every step Paul takes here leads him down the path towards being a messiah, but it's never articulated if he's making his own choices or just being led by the fervor around him, even at the last.

I think it's crazy that you noticed and put together that when she was wearing blue she was in love and that when she wasn't wearing it (at least not on her head) she wasn't in love as much anymore One other thing I'm the book Chani believes in the prophecy but in the movie she is the only one who doesn't. Fun fact: the Giedi Prime scenes during the daytime were shot on an infrared camera, making it so that only infrared light could come through the lens, and not any visible light (color wavelengths). Since our sun radiates these infrared rays constantly, it creates this black and white theme to where the sun seems to be radiating pure white photons. These rays can’t be seen by us normally, so it also adds these mysterious effects to where the light is bending in odd ways or luminating settings in different methods.

i can confirm that seeing this in theaters was absolutely mindblowing, one of the only movies in the past couple years that had my heart racing after left the venue and drove home. just a masterpiece of artistic choices and scenes the whole way through. when the Worm broke through the dust cloud after the nukes hit and that hugedeep horn played, it genuinely shook the entire room with pure bass sound. it felt like the worm was speaking directly into my core it was astounding also, as for the kissing on the mouth thing, it doesnt generally bother me even if it is pretty weird. my biggest problem i had with that scene is that it's fuckin BARON LARDASS JABBA THE HUTT HARKONNEN that gets the kiss. if it were ANYONE ELSE i really wouldn't have minded it at all because i know its just to show how strange Feyd and the rest of the Harkonnens are, but that man is so disgusting just the thought of even touching him gives me nasty shivers

Timothy Chalemet's voice when he's speaking Fremen at the War Council is so bad-ass, and he sounds so different. The authority he conveys in that scene gave me goosebumps. What a performance! Rebecca Ferguson also did a phenomenal job as Lady Jessica. The way she switched when she became the Reverend Mother, and communicating with her unborn daughter, Alia was just outstanding. Zendaya was a bad-ass in this as well. But for me, the standouts were the cinematography by Greig Fraser, the music by Hans Zimmer, and of course the directing by Denis Villeneuve, and we can't forget the author, Frank Herbert, who created rich worlds, diverse characters, and a lore and mythology that will no doubt outlive us all. Incredible work by everyone involved. I wasn't sure about Austin Butler as Feyd Rautha when I heard he was cast, but now that I've seen it, he was actually great.

For the scenes under the black sun you were asking about, it doesn't look like regular black and white because it's not, it's in the infrared spectrum. They used a modified 3d camera rig, essentially a splitter that usually is used to put two bulky cameras effectively eye width apart. For Dune they instead aligned them with no offset, but one of the cameras was an IR camera so they could blend between them as characters moved between shadow (color) and sunlight (IR). I think its an ingenious effect that really makes the planet feel alien.

21:56 all those tiny details... because they filmed ON LOCATION. I'm talking about 150 degree tempatures, and 50 mph winds. It was brutal, but it gave the film that little extra 24:41 it's called a "still-tent" and it seals up, allowing people inside to get out of their stillsuits and relax. The moisture is collected by tent and reclaimed in the morning before packing the tent away. But yeah, i imagine Fremen sex as being quick with little physical effort. The Fremen have actually evolved physically to conserve water.

Interestingly the character of Chani becomes more important in this interpretation of the first book as she denies the prophecy and her own role in it while Stilgar embraces it so fervently. They dropped an interesting plot of the loss of her and Paul's first born son and put off the birth of Paul's sister since they condensed the history of Paul's becoming Muad'ib and reclaiming Arakis so drastically.

I saw this moxie in IMAX and I was moist 😂 the sound design was beautiful. Austin Butler as Fade Rautha in the Black and White gave me chills. The story of the White Savior, using the Natives to fight White Mans Wars is beautiful. Star Wars could NEVER. I was in the movie theater saying "wow" out loud... I couldn't help it. The Harkonnen scenes were shot here in Budapest. They built it up. My friend made the makeup for the actors, including Freyd. Insane, isn’t it, how it looks? No CGI. That shows a bit better than any Star Wars movie ever. Everything that is not desert is from Budapest, Hungary. Btw: the stil suits were made here too. The knive fight training was here too, some of my friends participated in it.
