Thats absolutely amazing that you saved it for the channel, but its indeed a sacrifice. Can't complain as a fan of yours tho. Absolutely delightful reaction Calypso. Some observations as an obsessed fan of the books. -----Spice is indeed important, but not only for the allucinogens. Its the only way to "see" secure paths beyond the stars to allow for interestellar travel, so its basically the blood vessel of trade, transport etc. It also allows humans to extend life. -----The green garden wasn't Arrakis, it was Kaitain, capital world of the Imperium and seat of House Corrino (Christopher Walken and Florence Pugh). -----Jessica was revealed as pregnant in Part One. They conceived her before Leto's death. -----The sniper were lasguns, yes. Its not recommended to use lasguns against shields, cause it can cause an atomic reaction. But in the desert no one uses shields because their vibrations attract agressive worms. The fremen were using lasguns against the snipers, thus why the commander orders no shields, as it would be catastrophic for everyone. Warfare in Dune is a bit of a rock, paper, scissors. -----Stilgar doesn't want Jessica to puke because of the cultural fremen trait of not wasting humidity. They don't even cry for the dead. -----In the books the fremen are quite monolithic. The movie did a good change in showing more diversity of ideology and opinions. The more younger northern warriors only want to fight, without believing in the messiah. The more older and strict southern fremen do believe in the Lisan al-Gaib. -----The daughter recieved the same multiple consciousness of ancient reverend mothers as Jessica. She "awoke" even before birth. This is considered an abomination by the Bene Gesserit. Its like she's a reverend mother without the training and tests an adult Bene Gesserit would have to pass before drinking the poison. -----The big contraption is an spice harvester. -----His eyes are already blue, yeah. In the desert you live surroundered by, smell and breath spice, and with the fremen you also eat it. So the overexposure of spice in your organism makes them blue with time. In the books other non-fremen have also blue eyes because they are spice adicts, and in the imperial ""civilized"" society that's not well considered, so they use contact lenses to hide it. -----To stop the worm you usually tire it or simply jump when its secure. You can also let go of the hooks so you stop exposing its inner skin, the worm goes under the sand and then you jump. -----Yep, the Emperor was behind the Atreides assassination. He loved Leto, sure, but he also hated his way of doing things. Leto (at least movie Leto) was far more honorable and sentimental in his ways than the more pragmantic and ruthless Shaddam (the emperor), and that makes him a problematic political rival in the Landsraad (the assembly of all the great houses). But the emperor cannot take part in a minor war or attack a house without a legitimate reason, so he helped the Harkonnens in secret. With Paul alive he now risks that secret being revealed and thus civil war. -----Giedi Prime (the Harkonnen world)'s sun is black - it absorbs all color. This explains why in the interiors and night scenes there are colors, but when they get out its all b&w. -----No, the doctor was killed by the Baron. This one is an Atreides officer that was captured during the attack in the first movie. The actor is actually the fight coordinator in both movies, Roger Yuan. In the movies he's Lanville, and can be seen in part one being a part of Leto's high council. -----Yep Feyd-Rautha is another Harkonnen nephew. He's the na-Baron, which means he's the heir apparent. Rabban (Batista) is his brother. -----The black dudes are just arena slaves, they are there to ensure the prisoner doesn't try to avoid the fight and to ensure Feyd wins, but now Feyd understand he's being put to the test, and he's kinda obsessed with his own personal honor so he doesn't want them to intervene. -----Yes, the Bene Gesserit have almost absolute control over their bodies and can choose the sex of their children. This is super useful for their millenia-long eugenics plan to produce the Kwisatz Haderach. Originally, Paul was supposed to be a girl, and then marry Feyd so they would have the Kwisatz, but Leto wanted a boy and Jessica gave him one because of love. Love is the detonant of this story. -----Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) also writes a lot in the books. Every chapter in book one starts with an epigraph written by her. -----Anya-Taylor Joy is indeed Paul's sister, called Alia Atreides. He's seeing the future. This is how she will look like in future movies. -----I don't recall Jessica having inscriptions in her face in the books, but I would say those are the words of the Lisan al-Gaib prophecy, written in chakobsa, the fremen language. -----In the books the use of atomic weapons is considered taboo. If a house uses one, all the other houses will have a valid cause of war against them. In the book, Paul only uses his atomics to destroy a mountain (the Shield Wall), to allow passage for the worms during the attack. -----In the books the Baron is a pedophile who is obsessed with Feyd's lips and beauty. He was super abusive to his nephews, so I can't fault Feyd for enjoying watching him die lol. -----Paul, because of his status as Kwisatz Haderach and as a result of the millenia-long Bene Gesserit genetic plan, has a natural predisposition to prescience (to see the future). But his visions are fragmented and imperfect, he can't see that far away, he couldn't see the destruction of Sietch Tabr (where the fremen stored the sacred water). By drinking the Water of Life, he now sees multiple clear paths and he can choose which one to take. In the absolute majority of them, their enemies win - his sister, mother, Chani, the fremen, he himself, they all die. He sees one tho, the only one - this path to survive means he has to take the mantle of Lisan al-Gaib, which means risking the other visions to come true - the ones about a massive war and billions dying because of him. This is why he's not a hero, but he's also not a complete villain because he tries to contain the risk in multiple ways, like trying to gain political legitimacy by marrying the princess. This is why he looks so sad and resigned when the houses still reject him and he's forced to give the order for the holy war. He's risking billions, but he also can't simply allow his enemies to murder him and his loved ones, its an impossible choice and this is why Paul Atreides is a dark and tragic figure. -----Its to be expected for Chani to understand all of this in future movies, as Pauls says he has seen she will come to understand. In the book Chani is much more accepting of Paul as the messiah and has no problem with Paul marrying Irulan, as he assures her that the princess will have no moment of love from him, and no sons. -----100% agree on Paul being at his peak in that final scene lol Chalamet was absolutely transformed. Between the blood and the ring and the dark turn and the way he promises violent consequences for the Emperor just with that stomp on the floor. He's not a hero but its impossible to not love him as a character and vibe with his fury against all these ancient and arrogant orders and inviduals that aspired to control or kill him. 100% will have a third movie. Denis Villeneuve is already working in the script. Very perceptive in understanding Paul's decisions at the end, and the fact that he control the only source of spice and his fremen are the best warriors of the Known Universe. He's essentially unstoppable but there's still a lot of drama incoming.

The fascinating thing about the Dune movies - especially about the second one - is, that the director managed to tell the very complicated and very detailed story of the book... and he did this with the smallest possible amount of exposition. A perfect example of: Show, don't tell... which is a very important rule in cinema. Denis Villeneuve is not just the director of Dune. But the creator. He said in an interview that he had (early versions) of the sortyboards already worked out, twenty years ago. The idea to direct this movies was his life's dream. And they became his masterpieces. Frank Herbert - the original author and inventor of Dune - wrote six Dune books. The story of the first book has now been told. Denis Villeneuve is already working on the third film. It will probably carry the same title as it's literary orgin: Dune Messiah

Despite us wanting a reaction from you, you really SHOULD HAVE seen it in theatres... Not bashing you but the experience is largely worth it. If they rerun it in theatres, you know what to do, go watch it there ! In the cinema, Thumpers and worms make the whole room rumble. Whether you find pumping water not satisfying anymore is irrelevent, the Fremen don't waste water, no wonder they didn't want Jessica to puke, that's some wasted water. And in fact, it's just for the movie, in the book, Jessica controls herself enough to not vomit in those circumstances. Not said in the movie, Chani is the daughter of Lyet Kynes. So she has an education that goes beyong religious teachings. Bene Gesserit sisters can control their physiology on the cellular level. They can neutralize poisons they absorb and chose the sex of the the children they bear. Usul is just a secret Fremen name. Officially he is Paul Muad'Dib Atreides. Baby worms tolerate water, grown worms are allergic to it. Yes Gurney defeating Rabban that easily proves something, the Harkonnens usually rely on their artillery and snipers to do the job, they are terrible at sword fighting. (remember how Duncan made them stand back in the first movie?) In the bok, Paul publicly states that Princess Irulan, while married to him will bare no children of his nor will she share his bed and those privileges remain with Chani and only her. They didn't do it in the movie just to have Chani go away distraught... I'm not convinced that was the right choice. If Villeneuve follows the timeline, Messiah takes places about 14 years later (12 in the books because Alia is supposed to be born at the end of the first book and that the operations against the Harkonnens take two whole years before the Emperor moves his ass trying to intervine), takes place AFTER the war and after Paul controls the whole galaxy. Other factions like Bene Gesserit plot to overthrow him but are blocked by his Prescience. And BTW, the Abomination is Alia, not Paul. An unborn child should not be exposed to the Water of Life and gain the knowledge and counsciousness of all who preceded that child because it could influence them alot. Villeneuve said that from Book 3 (Children of Dune) and on, the story was too esoteric for him, making a trilogy on the first two books is enough and somewhat closes Paul's arc. The second book is very short, perfect for a single movie.

Aish! You need to read the Frank Herbert series of Dune novels. You have either come so close or hit the nail on the head of so many things. There are a few things that I will say about the novel vs the movie. - In the novel Chani is actually always on Paul's side, and does believe he is the Mahdi. There is a lot that was cut out about Paul & Chani's relationship, and it is truncated from the novel's timeline. - In the novel. Alia is born a full Reverend Mother because of the Water of Life. The timeline of the Fall of House Atreides to the Battle of Arakeen is about 2 years of Muad'Dib leading the Fremen and choking off the flow of spice. - The third film is greenlighted...and Paul's story mainly wraps up with the next novel, Dune Messiah, which Denis Villeneuve has said he will make. From then on, the story moves on with other characters taking center stage in the third book, and after that...Frank Herbert wrote 6 Dune novels before he died in 1986 (Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse:Dune). I recommend all of them. After that, new Dune novels did start appearing again until 2000(?) when Frank's son Brian Herbert and co-writer Kevin J. Anderson wrote about 14 to 16 more books, which were successful enough for them to keep being written. Almost all of them based on notes Frank made and hid in a safe deposit box on antiquated computer discs and in notebooks. - As for Jessica's parentage...the real answer was never known until the first trilogy by Brian & Kevin was written in the early 2000s. The first trilogy was a prequel series set before Dune, the Great Houses Trilogy. It also deals with a facet of the Baron's character that was sublimated in this production. The full story is horrific...but you are basically right.

Great reaction as always to a great movie! I was really surprised how well Timothee transformed for his role as Paul in this, to reflect his coming of age and gaining additional power (both personal and political). I also watched your Chernobyl series reaction videos just before this and really enjoyed them! Have you considered reacting to the recently released Fallout TV show? Even if you've not played the games, it's quite a good show.

40:13, just think of each of the Great Houses as a nuclear power like the US, UK, Russia and China. However, there are strict prohibitions about how these weapons can be used. Any House that used them against actual people would be severally punished by the rest. Paul using the three missiles against the Shield Wall at the end of this film exploits a legal loophole since it's just a big piece of rock.

You almost hit the point of the book series. Paul is becoming all powerful and you are on his side and he is a hero. This is a form of MAGA except that Paul is knowingly and willingly using the Freman. If you extend Freman to Freeman, he takes their freedom by having them willingly give it up to him. He is worse than a Mussolini because he can see the future and see the consequences of his actions. He’s a Julius Caesar, but almost a god. This is Herbert’s warning not to follow the hero and surrender your decision making to him.

I think there’s still cinemas showing Dune part 2, look around it Amy not be too late to see it on the big screen. I was often very distracted watching your reaction by the white circling border lines. Otherwise fantastic reaction from a smart woman. By the way the adult woman on the sand beach after Paul drank the Water of Life was a future vision of his sister Alia who is currently in Jesdica’s womb during the movie. Since Alia knows Paul is prescient, she can talk to Paul in the air at any time during her life and leave a message for past Paul to hear.

52:53, Two conversations are missing from this final scene. 1) Thufir Hawat Duke Leto’s Mentat advisor actually survived the Fall of House Atreides. The Harkonnens captured him and forced him to work for them. In secret despite being brutalized constantly, Thufir was still loyal to House Atreides. So he found out that Gurney was still alive and started feeding Gurney information to hurt the Harkonnens spice trade. In this final scene, Thufir lives long enough to stand at attention in front of Paul and address him as “My Duke”. It is a bittersweet moment for both of them as Thufir was like a grandfather to Paul. Thufir died happy to see Paul live to avenge his father and reestablish House Atreides. He had served Paul's grandfather Paulus Atreides and then his father Leto Atreides. So with his last breath Thufir let Paul know "I'm still your man now and for always". Denis Villanueve did film this final scene but left it on the cutting room floor. 2) Paul and Jessica letting Chani know that the marriage to Princess Irulan is merely political. They explain that Paul will never spend time with Irulan, show her any passion or sire children with her. The Imperial marriage is all for show. Paul basically marries Irulan then goes home to Chani. They never mistreat the Princess but everyone knows that she is Empress in name only. David Lynch the director of the 1984 version of Dune actually filmed both of these scenes and they can be found on KZbin.

_Dune: Part One_ and _Two_ are both just the first book. Director plans to make the shorter second book _Messiah_ as the Part 3 and then end it there. There's like 5 books total but Dune and Dune: Messiah come to a natural stopping point. I believe the director will wait like 4 years before making Messiah. One thing they don't really go into here but is super important for the 2nd book is that the Emperor doesn't control space travel; the Spacing Guild do. The Guild doesn't really care who runs Arrakis so long as their spice production they need too run their business is secure; the Emperor works _for them_ to keep production on track, not the other way around. The Harkonnens may be crazy, but they're dependable. Not even Feyd-Rautha would be crazy enough to nuke the spice fields. Paul's rise to power doesn't just challenge _this Emperor,_ it challenges the very idea of Empire as the galaxy knows it, and _everyone_ is shit terrified of what Paul might do to tear it all down.

I'm not sure what the director is doing with this rather notable scene, but please understand that in the book, Alia is the Abomination shunned by the Bene Gesserit because she received the memories and sensations of multiple lifetimes before she had even drawn breath. She emerges into the world as a fully empowered Reverend Mother, carrying all of the transferred memories of the Water of Life, and her ancestors. Whom she can speak with. As a fetus. Alia is the Abomination in the book. Quite clearly and intentionally so. That said, the adaptation is stunning, and I really want to know how they're going to treat Alia.
