This is what I appreciate about Bautista, he is willing to take roles that would be degrading, such as losing in a fight, kissing feet in humiliation. Dwayne Johnson on the other hand refuses to be in a role where he would lose a fight.

that view seems narrow and superficial, the rock may not have been offered any degrading roles in the first place, or refused them because he does not think he was right for the role.. the rock from the movies i've seen of him is always the same character just having a different level of gravity. he is a one dimensional actor but not a one dimensional person.. why compare even them at all in the first place, because they both were wrestlers and bald?
@vincenzodelavega528416 күн бұрын
There are multiple interview where they explained that the Rock and Vin Diesel had contracts explaining how many punches they can take, fights to win/loose etc.
@Willy253716 күн бұрын
There was a time that Dwayne would play roles that cast him as villains or losing fights, like in Doom or Get Smart, but nowadays it seems he let fame get to his head and start to think that he owns the industry despite only really playing pretty much the same role every movie lately. Arguably, even John Cena has more range than him nowadays. His performance as Peacekeeper is surprisingly quite compelling, and even before that he already showed that the he can be more than just tough guy personas, like his character in Bumblebee or his cameo in Barbie, for examples.

In the book, Vladimir Harkonnen uses Rabban to brutalize the Fremen so Feyd Rautha, who's more charismatic and calculating, would look better by comparison. Meanwhile book Rabban was too dim to realize this deeper plan. That dynamic made the Harkonnens look much more conniving.
@George_M_16 күн бұрын
Herbert must've read the Prince. Machiavelli recommends using a hatable brute to pacify an area, then remove, punish, or execute them to make your regular regime seem kind and merciful. Herbert may or may not have agreed with the logic but figured someone like the Baron would definitely.
@getrekt57215 күн бұрын
They did simplify the plot a lot in this movie which is a shame.
@SlewedHydra15 күн бұрын
@getrekt572 Agreed. One thing I miss from the book, is while Raban does seem to be a brute, he isn't stupid. Both the Baron and Reuftha think there isn't many Fremen and they aren't as much of a danger, but Raban knows they are wrong. He is the one fighting, and knows there is a lot more Fremen then thought. So while Raban is a brute and unable to see the plans with in plans, he isn't entirely dumb.
@j.f.l.bousquet199815 күн бұрын
@@getrekt572 Sadly it had to be that way. Villeneuve did "DUNE for Dummies" because he knows how idiotic are average moviegoers. I don't hate Rabban. He doesn't disgust me, or frighten me. I pity him, deeply. He was never especially clever or skilled...just very strong and somewhat physically tough. But among the Harkonnens, you have to be cunning, and if you can't be cunning, you MUST be feared. So...he became the quintessential bully. Constantly terrified of his own family, he took it out on everyone around him wildly violently. He had to keep them all afraid, because there's no other way. He was never anything but a frightened child with too much authority, too much physical strength, and not enough brains...growing up in about the most abusive environment that could exist. It's just sad, really.

rabban was the barrons eldest heir. However the barron was a smart and cunning man, and wanted his heir to be the same, so he made him general, probably mostly for his natural loyalty. However, he is also stupid, and he can never live up to the expectations of his master. In an interview they stated he was a coward, however I strongly disagree, rabban is a victim of the politics of his masters empire, he has to meet an expectation he can never live up to, and everyone around him is smarter than him, likely frustrating him endlessly. He clearly demonstrates his bravery by attacking the fremen, attacking feyd and attacking gurney in the final battle. He's a warrior forced into the position of a general that he can never be, surrounded by people who outsmart him and who aren't his type, I'd say he's incredibly alone. But he's still a monster for what he does.

Such a stellar performance. I remember an interview with Bautista where he talked about how he asked Villeneuve how he should portrait the character. Villeneuve explained that Rabban is a coward at the core. Bautista brought that out so excellently in every scene. It is Rabban's own fear and insecurity that makes him so scary, as he hides it between rage and brutality. You can observe his anxiety in every scene. Starting from the opening narrative, his look when the Baron appointed him steward of Arrakis. When he has to answer to the Baron for the interruption of the spice flow, he almost doesn't dare to enter the chamber. When he ran back to his ornithopter after getting his team picked apart by the Fremen. When he kissed Feyd-Rautha's feet. Amazing cast. Amazing actor.

In the book, Rabban is a brutal, sadist who killed Paul & Chani's first child during a raid, plus countless other Fremen. It's actually part of the Baron's plan, so he can introduce Feyd as a "savior". In the movie, they turned him into an absolute wimp and loser, who gets bullied by Feyd. Villeneuve pretty much dumbed down the story on every level.

It’s actually smarter because it adds layers as we all know his uncle liked to touch his nephews so when the facade of rabbans beast like warrior crumbles you can tell he’s just a child throwing a temper tantrum not because he wants something but because he’s scared of being hurt now that he’s a hulking musclehead you can see it on his face when baron is with one of his slave boys and then calls him in next which itself raises the question if uncle tried that with them now would they even be able to stop him Feyd could but would he try? But like Feyd said “what about Rabban?” You can see it in his face when he kisses his boots he’s right back where he started but with a new family member and a new type of abuse, psychological rather than sexual

Pretty much the mountain, great fighter and terrorizer but not a tactician or leader.
