Off the back of Part One in 2021 director Denis Villeneuve is back to deliver Dune: Part Two. Picking things up from where we left Paul "Muad'Dib" Atreides, Chani, Lady Jessica and more it's already outperforming the Part One in terms of box office and resonating strongly with audiences. It's pretty good also, that's what we reckon. Thanks for listening!

@@johno1544 although there is a debate as to whether the golden path truly was necessary. We only have Leto's word for it that this is the only way. Its made very clear that prescience is not exact or entirely reliable, and can sometimes be outright misleading or wrong. Fun fact - at one point they were going to give these films titles other than Part 1 and Part 2. The original Dune was just going to be Dune, but Part 2 had several names under consideration. Some include Dune: Prophet and Dune: Muab’dib. However, since Paul’s transformation occurs around consuming the azure water of life taken from the juvenile sand worm, it was nearly called Dune: Blue Harvest. Coincidentally that’s the working title of the original Star Wars and to avoid confusion, they just stuck with Part 2. (Also considered: Deuxne, 2UNE, and Dune 2: Dune it Again)

I think this touches on a difficulty I have with the two movies - you don't ever really get to understand just why the Bene Gesserit are so powerful/feared, or how things work with them. The changing of the Water of Life being another example - Paul sort of mentions "she's trained to do it" but that barely touches on the actual mechanics of it. Also very little real indication that he, as Kwizatch Haderach, gets access to the full racial memory, etc. I know you have to streamline things for adaptations, but in the first movie especially they could have sacrificed some of the massive sweeping landscape shots, and the scene with the "pet" for some more exposition around what the BG are and why Paul is so dangerous.

I knew he would have the skill to pull them both off in a way that would have more broad appeal, plus he's always been obsessed with Dune since he was a kid and absolutely geeks out over it. He's not some Hollywood Journeyman director who cranks out slop that makes a consistent profit, he genuinely knows everything about this universe. Fuck, I love this movie. @@IloveGorgeousGeorge I rewatched Dune 1984 to get ready for the new one-- in this case the Spice Driver fanedit which was a pleasant surprise with better pacing. I do get the sense that Villenueve's is somewhat sanitized, brought into more of this grounded and darker vision of the world with less fantastical elements. But... we're so used to having these lifeless movies made by a corporate board with a style sheet and focus test for every scene that having a clear visual identity to a work is so groundbreaking. And it helps that the vision is so entrancing. I genuinely regretted not seeing Part 1 in theaters because of the sound design, and that doesn't happen often.

The issue with Alia killing the Baron isn't that it is a bad scene, in fact its an amazing scene in the book - really shocking and sinister. The issue is how well can you ever translate a fully aware and articulate toddler to film. Lynch's Dune tried it and it was very odd, real uncanny valley stuff. I think Villeneuve simply wanted to avoid it. Another commenter suggested Jessica killing the Baron on Alia's behalf and, while logistically, it might of been weird to have Jessica so close to a still ongoing battle, the spirit of the original kill may have been better fulfilled.

The Giedi Prime (Harkonnen planet) aesthetic is inspired by H. R. Ginger (Famous artist and creator of the Alien design in Alien). He was originally contracted to design the Harkonnen planet designs for the first attempted Dune adaptation made by Jodorowsky. I imagine they stuck to that aesthetic as a homage - which works absolutely beautifully. Absolutely stunning visuals in an already visually stunning film.

16:35 the reason we use green screen now primarily is that CMOS digital sensors have twice as many green photosites as they do blue or red. It makes for a finer end result when you’re doing compositing work. Filmmakers still use blue screens tho because green is a far more luminous color and has the negative effect of spilling a ton on the foreground when it’s lit which is not ideal.

16:15 The shift to green-screens is mostly because digital cameras tend to have twice as many photosensors for green as they do for blue (Bayer patterns) so green screen is less "noisy" and error prone than blue-screens. Green is also closer to the centre of the human perceptual range so it tends to have more balanced lighting (particularly under lighting with black-body profiles where red is overlit, blue is underlit and green is just right).
