Christopher Walken, excellent portrayal of Shaddam: overconfident in his forces, but realistic about the powers and authority of others, and fear in his eyes that he might lose the grip on his empire. Beautiful.

The sisterhood made sure he doesn't have sons. They made sure he wasn't fully in control and I think it impacted him mentally. In the books he is younger, or at least younger looking, he takes spice so ages slower.

It speaks volumes about her hubris that she'd view a potential puppet being psychotic as 'irrelevant'. The ideal puppet is someone, ironically, like Paul Atreides: young, idealistic, and impressionable. Get someone like him on your side, convince him he's working for the Good Guys, and he'll do your bidding without even needing instruction. On the flip side psychotic personalities are far less reliable and can go from 'asset' to 'liability' without warning.

I think Irulan meant "psychotic" in a moral sense (people will suffer if he gets that position of power), whereas the Reverend Mother was thinking like you: what matters is the _puppetability_ of Feyd-Rautha.

Dune is basically the original Game of Thrones. Even George R.R. Martin has said that he drew inspiration for his "A Song of Ice and Fire" novel from Frank Herbert's. The Corrinos are like the Targaryens and the Atriedes are like the Starks.

I think Dune is much better compared to LOTR. Dune and LOTR, while very different series, are very thematically complex and thematically driven. They are also very similar in sheer originality for their time, which was waaaay ahead of the game for both science fiction and fantasy of the day. Consequently they have exerted by far the largest influence on their respective genres of any work, as well as a massive influence on each other's genres. It's easy to forget that Herbert and Tolkien were contemporaries. Although Herbert was a generation younger, Dune came out only 12 years after LOTR. Tolkien read Dune and "dislike[d] it with some intensity", which is hardly surprising, though he recognized Herbert was "working along the same lines".

To be fair, she put herself in a position to be pushed aside by remaining the creature of the pre-Paul Imperium, for her father, her sister, for the Sisterhood, etc. When she eventually relented and gave in to Paul, he accepted her in short order. She had her role to play, same as Farad'n did, even if it couldn't be formally recognized due to needing to push the Corrino name out of history's pages. The Twins never would've gotten to adulthood without her, and Siona never would've been born if Farad'n hadn't continued the Atreides bloodline. It's the counterpoint to figures like Jessica and Chani: they couldn't be officially recognized as wives due to politics, but that's what they were nonetheless.

When her father says , "You would be a formidable empress" , and they hold the camera on his eyes for a good second or two. I got the distinct impression, since he had Duke Leto taken care of, Leto who he considered to be "like a son", that perhaps his daughter would not be safe now that she revealed how capable she was - I got the feeling he doesn't want to let go of his position so easily.... something about the look in his eyes ... or maybe Christopher Walken was thinking he had to get to the bathroom soon. :)

It's irrelevant to the Bene Gesserit because in their minds, they've laid out the course for history. So as long as things go according to their plan, idiosyncrasies of individuals are irrelevant. When entities, empires and systems become idiosyncratic, that's a big deal again.

In the books, Leto (the father) was someone the Emperor considered a potential suitor for Irulan. But the balance of power between the Throne and the noble houses, combined with the work of the Bene Gesserit, means that the moment any one noble gains too much power in the Landsraat, they could challenge the Emperor. If Leto had married Irulan, they would have bound their houses, but the other noble houses would have unified against the Atreides and potentially even the Emperor.

He didn’t want to give his foes even more influence by making them marry the future empress. Like the Baron said, the emperor is a dangerous jealous man who doesn’t want to share his power.

I think Bene Gesserit and their breeding program had something to do with it. Original plan for Paul was to be a girl, who would marry Feyd Rautha. Their child would be the Messiah. With Jessica choosing a boy, everything went downhill.

The books are full of instances where other characters find Irulan silly, lazy, etc. But it makes sense to portray her in the films as a lot smarter and more ruthless than people assume. One assumes that a key to her survival was ensuring that people underestimated her.

The Reverend Mother was two steps ahead of Irulan. If she was smart she'd put two and two together and realize that the BG already have their "savior" in the wings.. get rid of paul, get rid of the emperor, get rid of Feyed (they know they can't control him, but that's just a tiny inconvenience), they will then have another whom they can control. They have always had contingencies.. except they weren't quite prepared for how STRONG Paul's power and prescience would limit the BG. So much so that they practically had to beg Jessica for help.

How is that using The Voice? She was reaching the end of her bona fide "computation line" as a bene gesserit-trained thinker. Special emphasis is due to her putting weight behind her own words to enforce that she is very certain of her far-fetched logic. The Voice is for giving commands. Bene gesserit wont and cant use it on each other anyway. Not sure why you would think this, given that there was no witch-echoey effect either.

The mentat call what they do computing, using all the data available around them they can observe and infer future scenarios, and their probabilities. The bene gesserit have a similar ability that they refer to as "weighing minutiae." It has more to do with direct observation of people, situations, relationships and past experience. Mentats are more about facts and numbers, and they handle finance, logistics, grand strategy and tactics for their masters. The mentats and bene gesserit are separate factions or "schools" with a distinct dislike for each other. So the reverend mothers favorite student (fun fact: irulan was not so in the books, she was actually one of the lesser adepts but useful due only to her position as princess) has zero chance of having also undergone mentat training. Plus she is female, and all bene gesserit are female. In fact, every princess of the Imperium receives bene gesserit training. On the other hand, mentats are usually dudes and they dont take the same manipulative role in politics the bene gesserit are infamous for... blah. Sorry for the nerd-out. But i mean is zero chance of mentat training as a bene gesserit princess. They dont mix.

When I first saw it, Princess Irulan's performance seemed kind of bland and boring. But then I re-watched it. And again. And again. And every time more nuances come up. It's still bland and I think it's meant to be like that -heartless, soulless, calculating, detached. Goddamn, Florence Pugh gave such a fantastic performance, almost steals the scenes away from the great Chris Walken. Almost though, because Chris generally doesn't even have to try to act much to own a scene he's in. Can't wait for more of Florence's Princess Irulan. If she's so good in these 3-liner scenes, it's gonna be fking epic in Messiah.

It's interesting how Shaddam does not address his daughter so much as a daughter, but first and foremost as a Bene Gesserit. And Irulan in this movie is a much more competent BG than Irulan in the books, where she certainly does not deserve the designation of Gaius Helen's best student. I may be wrong and I would have to re-read the first book to be sure, but I think they gave Irulan a lot of lines that were originally GHMs. I like Florence Pugh in this role, her icy-cold intelligence - you see something like that already in her portrayal of Amy March when she lectures Laurie on marriage being an economic proposition. And her voice - it somehow does not sound like a young woman's; she is one of those actresses who look very young but can sound very old. I remember prior to announcing her casting I was on a discussion here which actress might be right for the part and I suggested either Clemence Poesy (because she can do haughty so well) or "that girl who played Amy March", and the casting is certainly spot-on. Her Irulan certainly gives the impression that she could be a great Empress in her own right - what a pity that Frank Herbert, who invented so many strong women characters, was unable to imagine such a thing! And yet he claimed to draw upon history and there WERE powerful women rulers throughout history but his story gives them no voice and acknowledge them as behind-the-throne rulers at best.

@@heckingbamboozled8097 the books describe vibrant worlds full of majesty and colour. The movie doesn't do it justice, but it is tied to the political reality of this day. From it's original release Dune has suffered postcolonial critiques, this movie still had to endure it despite all the stripping away of potential issues the original work would cause.

Her advice is terrible. Direct conflict is the best way to to deal with a proophet, prothets cant be beaten. So you beat them you make them into just another soldier and eventually their side fall's appart. The divine is never beaten, so you beat them. You dont give them breathing space.

I despise revamps to some degree. There has already been 2 versions of this film - this version makes 3. The original version set the bar for all that follows. If the revamps cannot rise above the original, then the remake should not have been attempted because it is an insult to the original.

Bene Gesserit believed that they were still few generations off from Kvisak Haderak. So they needed to preserve the current Harkonnen bloodline some way as there was a chance that the Harkonnen would be wiped out. Plus if Harkonnen were wiped out the child of Feyd could be placed to rule the Harkonnen remnants.

On the contrary, Florence Pugh seems like a good fit (with acting chops to back it up) on the role of Princess Irulan in Denis Villeneuve's Dune Part II, much like Cate Blanchett as Lady Galadriel in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy.
