What I love about the colourless world of the Harkonnen is that such an effect is not without physical explanation. The star emits only a specific wavelength of light, and Villeneueve represented this by *filming in infrared*. That's why the people's skin in those scenes seems almost translucent. Long wavelengths penetrate deeper into the surface. Interestingly, this has the opposite effect of old black and white film photography, where the short wavelengths emphasise surface detail, and give skin a distinctly textured, almost cracked appearance.

The BG knew Jessica would be a good match for Leto and had planned for her concubinage later to produce a daughter. As for Paul being half-Harkonnen, in my opinion it shows 1) how deep and how long BG influence is on the various houses, 2) that Paul and his house, no matter how benevolent they are, are still part of a massive, oppressive system.

Dune book and movie is boring. It's about top 1% aristocratic people, atreides vs harkonnen vs imperials... The Fremen poor millions just want safety, wealth, and large families, and that's what most want. But these aristocratic people direct them away from happiness to not a half victory they would love to a holy war that will grind them up. . . . Is evil... Paul resisted but in end he wanted a dramatic win at any cost not a medium victory. He was a user. The Atreides used hope that was their #1 skill.. . . Paul in books kept going for more power thinking power plus magic powers would lead to magically good solution to universe, but he dragged the Fremen along this harder path in the end.... Fremen would've preferred aid and water from other planets, Paul gave them nothing but job of conquering resistors... Paul was total ahole, but with handsome face seeming virtuous we forgive him.... To be fair to idiot Fremen, Paul did do miracles like a god and see into their minds and predict the future so they truly can be forgiven for thinking Paul=God so we must obey. What kind of ahole leads by pretending to be God. Paul delivered blood not hope... Or I could be wrong. Ha

Villaneuve mostly hides P decision to be violent and greedy and instead Paul stumbles into deciding yes he's gonna do it. Paul chose revenge, chose using tricks and lies to make believers of millions of Fremen ignorant yokels.. these yokels wanted bread and water and chance to have families and a little pride, P a near god does NOT give them this in end... And never shown is that Paul's rule will be better than Emperor's for most planets. And we all know from books and hinted in last minute or movie 2 is the Fremen go viking/fanatics and kill all groups in galaxy who won't yell Paul is god and also take over/steal as war booty all the good factories and ships and stuff of empire. If these were slimy green aliens it would be tragedy, but Villeneuve plays it as mostly victory. I could accept this, if Harkonnens were average of all leaders across galaxy, but we have the atreides nice planet and all the Landsraad who I assume show on avg the galaxy is ok...... Ok the Fremen on Arrakis for thousand years were massacred a lot to keep spice flowing, does that make them getting angry and tough and then massacring 1 million planets a GOOD OUTCOME, it seems any outcome would be better. Are they Hamas, those who are hurt get right to hurt next groups???. View the options and Paul knowingly to win ignored the costs, and that is definition of bad ruler. A hero Paul would have compromised, said to Emperor I don't want to rile up Fremen more so just give us a bit of aid and water and maybe 10 empty planets to have happy lives and families on. Evil bastards tend to do quickest funnest things, and saying I'm the Emperor and destroy any resistors is that....... Dune was about a twisted future in million years and not about morality, these characters were not good and moral, , and V used pretty actors to make it seem all fine....... But it'a a great movie, just it wimps out on showing Paul was ahole and millions of women and children are gonna die within year from Fremen conquests and looting, to skip that is deceptive movie making, , , I admire the deception. . . Imagine if for Paul used a ugly and creepy actor like Marilyn Manson and imagine him sending Fremen out and boy that would strike viewers stronger that this is bad outcome, , , or imagine the Emperor was a Empress who seemed to be trying though did do some trickery and then idea of these Fremen sexist abusive yokels replacing her on million planets also would seem bad, , in the books the Emperor was young and pretty too and not a old man and not with grumpy Sardaukar, , , when you see the options you can see V chose to hide P didn't get good outcome for anyone but himself, , , , , , I'm overstating it. ... PS. As ok analogy imagine if a ancient roman aristocrat had his family wiped out so he fled to Germania and told locals he was Thor and used tricks to seem supernatural and with power to grant paradise, and then these Germans invaded and sacked all 40 Roman provinces

Just to ramble.. im not sure Dune is a great story. It's too weird for us modern people to understand. Only medieval people living brutal lives could dream of a holy war and then join it. We are not medieval people. The Dune book was amazing for being so foreign, it was not famous for making is feel or even think. Herbert lived among the Washington coast Indians in 50s when they were lost and dispirited and they too were not modern thinkers. Us moderns will never feel half of what the Fremen feel, as they sign up to spend decades fighting in space so Paul can keep declaring he not old emperor is boss. Even the Other Planets are super weird, with families legally stuck on same job for centuries, they are not western they are more oriental or Indian. Paul really should be called "Rajiv Muhammed" and then we can easily see these are dumb peoples going on a dumb war cuz they're dumb. Or a stodgy name, like "Winchester VonSigmmund" " .. not a friendly name like "Paul"... Paul as a character is more Genghis Khan than a Paul... Would you sign up for a war even if it would succeed to set up the Pope over Asia and Africa, or realize that's a dumb waste of your life. And by book 2 we are shown the Fremen are idiots, Paul's son is worst tyrant. Again it's a foreign story not meant to make us feel. If you feel strong emotions you are NOT understanding the truth of this story, ,. ,, these cultures are beyond weird they are like aliens , , , would you watch a movie about aliens arguing about religion and feel a lot? I'm just speculating for fun.

Another interesting take on the scarcity of blue in the film's color pallet is because blue is a color normally associated with water. The only water on Arrakis that is above ground exists only in the water of life AND people who carry the water inside their bodies. In the films water is a symbol for life, while the warm tones symbolise death. So Chani wearing a blue band on her arm foreshadows that she will choosing the path of life at the end rather than following Paul in creating a path that leads to so much death and destruction.

A small correction, the escape made by Paul and Jessica was not the last time Jessica tried to enforce the mother-son relationship. In the first scene of Dune 2, she kills someone about to kill him and says something along the lines of "never leave your back exposed", thus showing there is still much she can teach him as a parent and a mentor. However, the bonus is, Paul doesn't really acknowledge it as a son or a mentee. Instead just checks up on her instead, further demonstrating that he is in a superior position now, and her attempts to reestablish the power hierarchy is in vain. We can also see this on Rebecca Fergusson's face. Brilliant acting where she is more disappointed and surprised he asked her that instead of bowing his head down and "learning" the lesson she was teaching him. Everytime i see any video about the movies, I realise more and more things about it. That's how you know its a masterpiece. It has so much to give

its crazy working on such a great 10minute dune video but consistantly pronouncing "fremen" incorrectly..

Loved the production on this, the only critique I’d have is on the audio sync which was quite distracting. Earned a sub from me!

It's a Denis Villeneuve movie, I'd watch it in a heart beat but I've read those books so much, I've already explored Arrakis a thousand times in my mind and that movie is priceless :P But I'm pretty sure the movie is kinda good, but the books, you get to go inside everyone's mind and feel the story from many points all from your inner eye, it's just not the same experience.

I enjoyed your video journey through the concepts of color in Dune 1 & 2. You’ve given a new perspective to these amazing movies! Thank you. I want to elaborate more on the color blue. It’s a higher octave color representing Intuition, Truth & the higher expression of Self. (Usually yellow represents hope but depends on the culture.) The Water of Life opens the inner vision & intuition. To me, Chani’s blue armband represents a true relationship or pairing of love with Paul. The Fremen are all blessed with a rich inner world, due to the spice, & strong spiritual leanings.

Blue armband in fremen culture signifies motherhood, according to the books, so she's pregnant.

Amazing Analysis, now i have to see Dune a fourth time, with emphasis on colour 😅. Just one minor Thing: Dune's Holy War is not inspired by Christianity's crusade to claim a Holy City, but it's based on the Dshi-Had, the Muslim Holy War of spreading faith by the sword, so the aspect of Red=Holy War is misleading, but still Not wrong because Red=Blood. Still a masterpiece of movie Interpretation, thank you!
