For those of you who are confused by the fact that actor Travis Fimmel appears to be playing the exact same role that he did in HBO's "Raised by Wolves" short-lived SF series, here's my theory. In "Raised by Wolves", Travis played Marcus/Caleb, a soldier with Tourette-like facial tics, a penchant for levitating and mystical powers courtesy of giant flying lizards which burrow through the planet Kepler 22B. In "Dune Prophecy", Travis plays Desmond Hart, a soldier with Tourette-like facial tics, a penchant for levitating and mystical powers courtesy of giant sandworms which burrow through the planet Arrakis. It is painfully obvious that Marcus/Caleb and Desmond Hart changed places when falling into a hole that connected Kepler 22B and Arrakis and then basically switched identities, which is in keeping with the sleazy nature of the character. Even the name of Dune Prophecy's second episode is..."Two Wolves."

The story does strangely enough take place (following current irl pew projections) in a post-Islamic future where the religions of humanity are so mangled and evolved that they're hardly the same, yet many similarities remain, especially in the new merged religion/splinter sect born through the amalgamation of all remaining faiths with future Islam in the Orange Catholic Bible [ Orange.. 'no reason, Catholic as in Universal and Bible as in Library, it isn't Christian] the new scripture is more akin to the Sikh Gur Granth Sahib, a mix of other world religions in one book. Which is why there are so many Islamic styled things from the veils and the pomegranate and how all the beni gesserit were in namaaz positions ( on their knees with hands up surrounding the water fountain as if praying for the dead leader, making "dua" for her ) This is why the line about "gods" plural, kind'a threw me off, this made me wonder if this was a change made by the showrunners, similar to how the [spoilers] judge of the change in the Dune movie part 1 , spoke about worshipping the worms, both these polytheistic threads made me wonder if these were added, since they deviate from the religion in the Books which is supposed to be more in line with a "what if" futuristic version of Islam, if we let it be subjected to perennialism and evolution over eons, including a space age, galactic colonization and Ai takeover followed by a terminator style war with the machines... I suppose polytheism could creep in, after humanity is subjected to so much abuse, cultural destruction and decay, but it still feels weird when you consider how they preserve so much of the lingo and prayer customs and fragments of eschatology which are mentioned in the books, making me think that these are all attempts to pull the series away from the Islamic aesthetic as to not accidentally ruffle feathers and create undue drama. Them being overly cautious to a fault, which I find to be a shame.

You don't need to aproach it the way Villeneuve approached it, the movies doesn't really have the same vibe and "visuals" of the books. Villeneuve chose minimalism and brutalist structures as the main visual style for the movies which makes it look too sterilized, even tho I love the Brutalism I think it took away the fantasy aspect of the books which are more prominent than the sci-fi. This tv show is based on books, not Villeneuve's movies, they don't need to look the same. The main reason you feel a disconnection in style is because we are actually seeing how the world of Dune looks like outside of the desert planet, most of the weirder music in the movies are to represent current Harkonnen that are different after thousands of years, and they also use more "world music" to represent the Fremen, we don't see that in the tv show because the setting is different, the time frame is different. In the books every couple volume the setting changes, thousands of years passes and all societies changes drastically, even the names of the worlds changes, the Fremen changes, the sisterhood, the Harkonen, the imperium, and even how the story is told and somewhat the style of the writing (it's a big change from children of dune to next 3 volumes)

@@vanyadolly my grudge with the movie was mostly the visuals, although I love brutalist architecture and mininimalism, it was overdone. It lacks grit, texture, noise... the interior scenes doesn't look like places people live in. Arrakeen is barely there as a populated city. The aesthethics lack some fantasy elements that are so present in the books but the movie feels like it's set in the blade runner universe. The lack of variation in colour also bothers me, makes the movie too bleak... I think the techinicolour look of that previous syfy series fits so much better with the first book. The soudtrack stealls most of the scenes, I liked the sketchbook dune soundratck a lot better, it was composed as an exploration for the final soundtrack but it has more character to it (but I understand why it wasn't in the movie because of how the score has to fit with the scenes) anyways

Serena did not see the end of the jihad, but by the end Vorian Atriedes became the highest commanding officer of the armies of the free humanand at the last battle a young Harkonnen diabled the strongest weapons of the fleet, because the crazy TM who was responsible for the killing of seren's child on earth put on a orbital human shieléd rigged with explosive, which ledt to a bloody battle with a lot of losses on th ehuman side. Reason why the Harkonnen were bannished.

Cool reaction! Love the long discussion at the end. Travis Fimmel is a supernatural actor! Check out "Raised by Wolves". I agree that Mark Strong seems to have been given too much direction to act dumb and useless -- it SEEMS obvious that he's just there to be killed off, but hopefully he smartens up and is with us for a long time. I feel like the show seems in danger of de-mystifying too much and becoming a generic story. These characters should be using spice, having secret visions, and more stuff hinted at but not shown. Solving the mythology never works because the writing is never as good as the individual's imagination. I noted that the scale of the cast and sets are obviously limited; just hire more extras as guards for the emperor of the known universe, please. lol

also good to see travis flimmel back but same time worried of his performance. ppl gonna say "its good, his performance reminds me of-" and thats where the issue is. if you dont know his rep came from being the lead role in Vikings show as ragnar lothbrok. the way he acts here is same as that. he also acted the same as the lead role in the warcraft movie. so branding wise its good/bad here. the good is ppl will recognize is acting personality very easily but he cant expand from that either the director/showrunner tells him to be that or worst he doesnt know how to. it goes hack to the chris pratt acting discussion on since his voice acting days for cartoons to live shows before movie rep his acting been near the same.

end of the day i still like him since i been fan of him since vikings and warcraft. there is moments he can vastly change from the common role personality seen here but he is limited to brand expectations. hoping one day he gets a movie lead role and heavily shine in that.

Yeah, basically he has no range. He always plays this irreverent, kind of low-key insane person. It just varies in extremity depending on the role.

36:30 from my other comment on tech and beleif eventually decline/alter in span of 10k years. literally era wise the yare about 110 years after the war against the ai machines which then their society is pretty much "modern" like but with advance tech and spaceships. the emperor as you see how he is treated he isnt the "god like emperor of the imperium and supposed immortal saduakar warriors" as seen in dune movies but more a regular emperor that can be swapped out via the sisterhood (note they aint called bene gesserit yet) teachings and/or voted removal by other house officials. but in next span of 10k years ppl faiths will change seeing the sisterhood as go to for their survivial, view the emperor as a religious figure, turn spice resource into in a way holy water claiming to bless ppl that take it in and so on.

I don't know the *real* pronunciation, but I still prefer Harkonnen as "Harr-coh-nen," rather than "Hark-con-en." The Harkonnens in the Lynch movie and British mini-series were all gingers, but the Vilenue movies have them all be bald and pale white; point being, why do the Harkonnens in this episode look normal, rather than hairless subterranean creatures? Is it because 10,000 years of weird breeding made them ghostly and bald, or does it simply not manifest in women? After all, Jessica was half-Harkonnen and she still looked normal. Anyway, just a casual viewer here, trying to make sense of things.
@GullibleTarget14 күн бұрын
Harkonnen is Finnish. In the same way Atreides is 'greek'. It's prounounced Harkon-nen. Means 'of Harkon'.
@user-lb9xw4xf2q14 күн бұрын
@@GullibleTarget Yeah, I've heard that it was the proper way but didn't know the reason why it was until your explanation. I've had friends who were book-readers who said it the other way, adding to my prior uncertainty. Regardless, to my uncivilised Ango ear, Har-Koh-nen just sounds better, but it is what it is. And hey, most languages tend to say foreign words that are altered from what they are meant sound like. Since you know things, is the ginger of the previous adaptations a reference to some sort of Nordic culture - maybe Viking - or mythology?
@GullibleTarget14 күн бұрын
@@user-lb9xw4xf2q your friends pronounced it in the same way when they first heard it. It's an anglicised pronunciation of a Finnish name. Just like how they pronounce Atreides in the adaptations. In Greek it would sound like:" Atrey-eedès" with the stress on the second syllable. But 'Dune' doesn't take place in present day Athens😉 As for the red hair.... I do drink and I do know things....but I am not Tyrion Lannister. I think the red hair is more a visual reminder that the high probability of manifestation of recessive genetic traits in a bloodline means....exclusion. in the recent movies, the Harkonnens are depicted as almost otherworldly. A different but equally effective way of saying: 'those Harkonnens are barely human, anymore'.
@user-lb9xw4xf2q14 күн бұрын
@@GullibleTarget Okay, thanks for the intel. Yeah, I figured the new version with them being hairless and pallid was to reinforce their increasing detachment from humanity, (though Baron Harkonnen was also inspired by Colonel Kurtz), but the ginger thing remained a mystery; until now, so that theory of inbreeding does make sense. I thought red hair might be some Norse myth thing, but I suppose the simplest explanation is the most likely in the Dune worlds, at least in film and TV.
@GullibleTarget14 күн бұрын
@user-lb9xw4xf2q the lore is so dense that its not surprising you try to find out hidden meaning. I take it you enjoy works of art(literature/film/tv/games with deep lore and ponder on them.
