@KingOfMadCows3 күн бұрын
The poisoning was never replaced by the water of life. The water of life is something unique to Arrakis since it requires a baby worm to be drown and no other planet has baby worms. The process to gain access to a Bene Gesserit's genetic memories requires the ingestion of a very strong poison. Then the sister has to use their internal biological control to neutralize the poison, this is what gives them access to their genetic memories. It's one of the reasons why it's so dangerous, sisters who cannot neutralize the poison will die. It almost killed Paul.

It was strongly implied that Lila doesn't have a biological mother. IMO, she was genetically constructed from the blood of Dorotea, which is why she wasn't able to see her mother in the Agony vision-because she literally doesn't have one. The Sisterhood didn't want to lose access to Raquella Berto-Anirul's genetic memory after Valya Harkonnen offed Dorotea (being her only descendent, I think), so they created Lila in their lab, which is the big secret they were hiding from Lila.

Plot Twist: Desmond is a "Proto Paul" someone with similar abilities that the Benny couldn't control, eventually they'll kill him, and then their centuries long quest starts to control and manipulate the lines until they create someone with similar powers as Desmond, but that they can control. This would also explain why the benny was so scared of Paul in the first place.

Interesting theory
@ZingaroXIV3 күн бұрын
Building on that theory, Desmond might open the BG to the concept of the kwisatz haderach. To this point, that term hasn't come up. The BG are looking for conventional paths to power such as putting one of their own sisters on the throne. No mention of a specific breeding program for a super being. Possibly Desmond gives them that idea - and also scares them so deeply that they focus their breeding program on creating a kwisatz haderach that they can control.

To me it feels like Desmond has went through a similar poison transmutation process as the Bene. Maybe once he was eaten by the Shai-halud, he was bathed in the water of life with his injured eye giving him the male equivalent of the bene gesserit power. Hence the polar opposite of character traits, lying/honesty, patience/action, indirect/direct. This would also correlate with racellas vision “once born in war, twice born in spice” as well as why there is so much “eye” imagery.

Why kill her? He just dominated her and caused her worst fears and dreams to come true. There is nothing like a panicked enemy to make mistakes and facilitate your plans. The last thing this guy wants is some other woman who he hasn't subjugated to take stable leadership and start acting effectively. Valya is so threatened, she may expose herself and her organization in her desperation to remove him from the board. Just like she exposed her power of voice, something that is supposed to be a deeply held secret. Usually if you hear it, that's your ass. Can you imagine how discredited BG would be if it was common knowledge that they could completely control someone? His attack in NOT killing her damages her far more than merely killing here, which would also have undesirable consequences for the Emperor and the political situation. For those of you who are confused by the fact that actor Travis Fimmel appears to be playing the exact same role that he did in HBO's "Raised by Wolves" short-lived SF series, here's my theory. In "Raised by Wolves", Travis played Marcus/Caleb, a soldier with Tourette-like facial tics, a penchant for levitating and mystical powers courtesy of giant flying lizards which burrow through the planet Kepler 22B. In "Dune Prophecy", Travis plays Desmond Hart, a soldier with Tourette-like facial tics, a penchant for levitating and mystical powers courtesy of giant sandworms which burrow through the planet Arrakis. It is painfully obvious that Marcus/Caleb and Desmond Hart changed places when falling into a hole that connected Kepler 22B and Arrakis and then basically switched identities, which is in keeping with the sleazy nature of the character. Even the name of Dune Prophecy's second episode is..."Two Wolves."

@@GreenEyedGumby I don't think it is for three reasons: 1. The characteristics that Raquella mentions in this episode really seem to fit Paul or someone else but not Leto II. 2. Since Denis put Dune on the map again, none of those new fans necessarily knows who Leto II is. Even among fans of the original books, lots never got past book 1 or 2. This issue is not an easter egg for the die-hards, it's central plot. "Tyrant" seems like an obvious referent to Leto II, but I think it applies equally well to Paul. He takes the throne, the guild, all the spice, and his Fremen legions purify whoever disagrees. I know Leto II upstages him, but still. 3. However, now I'm beginning to speculate that everyone's got this wrong. Maybe they're not talking about far off events 10,000 years down the line. I think the reckoning they're talking about may be in the current time frame and something we'll see. What causes me to speculate on this is her description of "A revenant full of scars. A weapon born of war ..." Revenant full of scars is just not the best description for Paul Atreides. It fits Demond pretty spot on though. Also, I could argue it either way that Paul was "born of war." He was born during peacetime and he was 15 years old in the books. He had seen nothing of war up until when Arrakis was attacked. Desmond, on the other hand, has been through 10 (?) tours of combat on Arrakis. On the other hand, Paul was trained for combat since he was a three-celled embryo, so...

@@GreenEyedGumby You're welcome. Having thought on this further, "a weapon born of war" could fit Paul or Desmond pretty well. This could be saying that by waging war on Arrakis, the Harkonnens and Emperor forced Paul to be reborn as a weapon-something he intensely did not want to do. It was the best of bad options. However, I still lean towards thinking it applies to the current timeline and Desmond. I make no final conclusions though!

Have you also noticed acolyte Jen has a strong family resemblance to Tula - maybe her secret mother?
@aaronbrutus26543 күн бұрын
I haven't read any of the books so I'm mildly confused. I just have common sense, so I understand some things. So, I'm assuming Tulia had no idea what her sister did otherwise she wouldnt have sent her protege in there. Which would make Valya truly evil in my opinion. I don't trust Desmond at all, BUT everything he thinks and says about the sisterhood is spot on.

Liked the video, one small complaint: You call the Bene Gesserit “the Bennie” but this bugs me and doesn’t differentiate them from the Bene Tleilax which might pop up in dune part 3 as I recall that is where we first meet the face dancers. Anyway, small thing but it doesn’t seem that much harder just to say Bene Gesserit. While this is a geeky complaint, at least I’m helping your algorithm by interacting in the chat, right?
@CptTripsКүн бұрын
For me it belittles the Bene Gesserit, I'm well aware "Bennie" is tongue in cheek but it does bug me when it's used so often. The Bene Gesserit are terrifying, they've been made this way due to sexist politics - something which is very well addressed in the Dune universe, kinda, as much as a male author from the '60's can do anyway, but thats a whole different issue. Obviously they are evil but all factions in the power struggle are, no-one comes out clean in this universe, everyone is morally grey - which is why it works so well. I dunno, I'm a girl, I stan the evil witches.
@Jensen-CКүн бұрын
Wow. Nice that episode 2 seems to be alot better than episode 1. But I’m worried they are watering down the power and stature of the Bene Gesserit, they are supposed to be fearless, keniving,and strong. Too many of the bene are emotional, fearful, and acting like a CW anxty teen. Idk
@jamesvitale747423 сағат бұрын
Keep in mind that at this point, the Bene Gesserit are still getting established. They are a little more fragile than in the movie world. Voice is new and not every sister has that ability. All the Bene Gesserit you're used to seeing in the movies and Frank's books have the supreme confidence of knowing that they can absolutely control almost any threat with voice, and that this would usually be a surprise to the target (since they are extremely circumspect about who they let know, although we've already been outed in the show). In the current show, a lot of them don't have this capability yet. Their training techniques haven't been refined and perfected for 10000 years like in the movies. Also, a lot of who we're seeing are Acolytes and sisters who are not Reverend Mothers.

You were right the game's name IS pronounced as if spelled "Key-Ops". Herbert used the ancient Greek bastardization of the name of the Pharoh, Kufu! The Great Pyramid, probably the most famous tomb in history, was built by and for him (him being Kufu/Cheops). I should say there may well be a pronunciation of Cheops in other languages that does use the softer "ess" voicing of "Ch" but in all of my Archaeology/antiquity and history classes in college it was Key-ops.

Yeah, this is my thing too. I had the idea that we might see someone discover "voice" and how the BG got founded. But as our channel host said, a lot of that ground may have been already covered in Sisterhood of Dune and I think these guys didn't want to do a book adaptation, but explore some new territory, so they aren't doing that kind of origin story. Still, as your comment notes, an awful lot that we've seen is already very close to the form we encounter it in the movies 10,000 years later. However, one way to work towards the plausibility of this is to have an interpretation that the BG are trying to breed great rulers because they are primarily interested in a stable society (Valya's little revenge obsession against the Atreides aside). Also, from the time the thinking machines were destroyed, this is a universe where the government has outlawed a great deal of technological advancement and if you make something that even merely LOOKS like a thinking machine, your planet can be bombed into eradication. This would have a marked effect on people's motivation to invent or innovate. I think they made some minor changes (for example in the fashion... the costumes are not exactly the same as movie dune) which gives some breathing room for change over those 10,000 years. You might say, "Look at how much has changed in the world in the past 100 years," but a great deal of that has been driven by more and more complex computer technology which is outlawed in Duneverse. It may not be obvious to us what a handicap that it is to the pace of change that we've become accustomed to.

...didn't the acolyte who underwebt the proto-agony DIE? Also, it's a technicality but the BG hand talk isn't really called a "battle language" in Frank Herbert's books, although several characters make the same, and correct association you do. I'm not pointing it out because you're a tiny bit off, it's for the new readers trying to digest and understand a massive fantasy realm, equally as layered and steeped in it's history as Tolkien's LotR.

@SK4Madhi_Freal No, the Harkonnens, Corinnos/sardaukar, and other's are noted as having their own as well. @warpdriveby2 күн бұрын
@SK4Madhi_Freal To be fair, the way I remember reading it, every time it's brought up it's from the Atredies perspective, so we can very easily say either of our statements is correct (as long as it's known that essentially every faction with an formal military arm uses a form of verbal code/battle language. Given that there are thousands of languages in Dune, growing to at least millions if not trillions by Chapterhouse because of the scattering.

I'm quite nervous about Desmond being some kind of super powered villain. The Duniverse is all about taking human abilities to the extreme, not magic. There's always some basis in reality; even the Bene Gesserit speaking to their dead ancestors has its basis in the idea of genetic memories. Frank Herbert was adamant about pointing out that every "super power" in Dune was NOT magic. Making people combust from the inside out is treading dangerous lore-breaking territory. My other concern is that a worm apparently gave him this power? That goes against everything Herbert laid down. It's not the Star Wars universe where you can just make up new magical "force powers". I'm obviously going to watch the entire season before I make any final judgments, but....I still have concerns.

@jakemeyer81882 күн бұрын
@@TimmyneutronHBCG Of course it's science FICTION, but you're missing the point. Every piece of good science fiction (like Dune) sets up the rules of its universe and then doesn't break them. It's why you don't have people flying around like Superman in Dune...it's against the rules. Desmond being able to light people on fire MIGHT be breaking the rules. I'll wait until the end to be sure, but there's nothing to suggest in any of the Dune books that people could gain superpowers from being eaten by a worm.

Keep in mind that in the timeframe of this story (10,000 years before the Dune movies), human beings just spent 1000 years being hunted, slaughtered, and oppressed by thinking machines. The thinking machines controlled entire tracts of the universe, and while they did use humans as slaves, for the most part, they exterminated them. Imagine if our planetary population was reduced by 90%. We're 30 years in the timeline after the Battle of Corrin. You don't recover from that in that time frame. This kind of unsentimental ruthless and efficient nature of the machines is why there was such a strong reaction to Duke Richese's son having a thinking machine... In this universe, if you mess with computer technology that is outlawed, you don't get fined or reprimanded. Your house is ended. The thinking machines came within a hair's breadth of wiping out the human race, and no-one is predisposed to take it lightly. That's why 10,000 years later, still no AI in Dune.
