I think it's kinda clear the writers didn't really read Dune which is wild to me. Things like random characters calling sandworms "shai hulud" completely take me out of the show. Imo we need something like a great house plotting something that's not just Atreides, Corrino, or Harkonnen. Think of the Tyrells and what they added to game of thrones. Frank didn't care about that because he was just writing about the dynamics of one character on one planet but even then he introduced Fenring of which there's no equivalent in the show.
@BrianHerbertTryantКүн бұрын
The few writers they had once were all men in preproduction until you guessed it... Fake outrage from whiny snowflake liberals and cue diverse women writers from all colors, whom, as you have noticed we're only chosen to quiet the outrage crowd, despite their blatant lack of familiarity, let alone respect for, the Frank Herbert Dune universe. Basically the immutable characteristics of the these hack writers controlled the ultimate outcome of the show for the sole reason of satisfying a woke mob.
@jakeg3733Күн бұрын
Yeah, that's a problem. _No one_ but the Fremen call sandworms that, and while those things are widely respected they are not worshipped by the Imperium at large

Yeah I thought the same when the Empress called a sandworm Shai-Hulud, the writers dropped the ball big time.
@jakeg3733Күн бұрын
@Greg29 Disappointing. No one except the Fremen venerate sandworms like that. No one. The rest of the Imperium certainly have a healthy respect for them, and appreciate what they produce, but they don't deify those monsters

I think it comes down to how much of a production hell this show was in. So many different directions this show was taking over the years it took to be released ruined the story. I think going forward with one mind at the helm will significantly improve the show.

Frank Herbert’s writing had confidence. He didn’t explain because he had no need to explain. He wrote a thing and it was so because he wrote it. The others…. insecure, constantly trying to validate their writing with explanation. I read a couple of their books and gave up. There’s probably better fan fiction.

Kinda embarrassing and tragic a son has to live in the shadow of his father's great work. Very appropriate for the story of Dune on meta level though.
@BrianHerbertTryantКүн бұрын
But all he had to do was let a great writer continue his father's story. Brian writes at a 7th grade level. Brian is single-handedly responsible for the trash that he writes and the hate he gets for exploiting his father's work. This never had to be the case. It is entirely Brian's fault.

I find most discussions of “nerd culture” to be intellectually vacant, childish fan-wank that makes me embarrassed to even engage with the source material in the first place, but you’ve actually produced song very thoughtful criticism here. Also, I completely agree with your comparison of FH to BH / KJA, though I would use harsher terms.
@scotthaggarКүн бұрын
I think they’ve picked a lane. It’s Brian/Kevin’s writing, with Denis’ visual style. Sadly Frank’s style is Irreplicable - but it would probably be unsatisfying for most TV audiences anyway. So much of the lore was left on the cutting room floor for the movies, a great TV show would be just flushing out the missing concepts (mentats, navigators, spice etc.) Adapting Dune is hard. I’m waiting week to week for the show to drop, so good enough for me.
@willard39Күн бұрын
I did like the English Dune and Children of Dune (with a dash of Messiah). Production values were not movie-level, but still effective, and i thought they captured FH's vision even better than the Villenueve movies, which were great. Then again, I'm a fan of the 84 version - what do I know?
@ryeguy499421 сағат бұрын
Overall I like the show. My issue is they are trying to introduce too much; all these things came about around the same time - I.e. the voice, the sisterhood’s footing with the great houses, the emperor’s new formation of his guard hinting to the formation of the Sardaukar (possibly), etc. It is like the only way to connect the audience is to story is to just have all the ‘member berries’ present. Nothing really is progressed/developed over a vast timeline; it just is now.

I first read Dune over 20 years ago, I want more details about Omnious and the Butlerian Jihad, I want to know why things are the way they are in this universe. I love Frank’s work. But I also love Brian and Kevin’s for the detail. I guess that’s what I get for being a Sanderson fan. It’s like being an OG SW fan, then watching Andor. I’m not easily pulled out of immersion, like so many others say because well…I have an imagination. I want all the spoons. FEED ME. 😅

Them declaring that his abilities are based on a virus threw me for a loop. I don't like it; it would make more sense if he'd been exposed to an overdose of spice, and had latent pyrokinetic abilities unlocked. We've seen something similar before with Paul's awakening of prescience. If this were the case, Desmond's brain activity might be at a kind of resonance with whatever the hell organic molecules (presumably absurdly complex peptides) are in spice, explaining how he can burn people thousands of light years away who have quantities of it it in their bloodstreams, as both the sisters and nobles would have at this point. Considering spice already is established to have non-local, metaphysical properties it fits into the lore without too much mental gymnastics Instead, they're going the cheap route and blaming it on a machine-created bioweapon. That is an important part of the story, but it is long gone by this point

I'm a huge fan of the original 6. The "expanded universe" stuff from BH and KJA are 90% junk in my eyes. Dune requires the reader to think. Not everything is going to be explained, not everything needs to be explained. They dumbed down the whole franchise over the last however many decades and give us six episodes? Such utter nonsense. Very disappointing. I'm not a big fan of the 2 most recent movies, either, due to all the omissions and stuff it seems like they just made up 10 minutes before filming. I'm not sure I'll be watching the 2nd season. We'll always have God Emperor.

I find it annoying they introduced supposedly elite troops, only to have them get owned at every turn. Like, guys, there are 40 beeping explosive devices just hanging around. Maybe just leave? In fact the entire Mikaela/Resistance subplot is just really dumb. The resistors are dumb, Mikaela is dumb (just leaving your Bene robe hidden in contraband???). How did she survive the round-up? Why is she even there? Why can't the writers give her something to do? The actor is fantastic, but she's given very little.
@BrianHerbertTryantКүн бұрын
The Makela scenes caused me permanent brain damage. She's a Freman, who is a Bene Gesserit, who is a rebel, who owns a nightclub, who has a few planets worth of spice, which she sells to partiers to snort as party drugs, she has 30 thermal detonators... Meanwhile, no Freman went off world until Paul let them. This event literally happens 10,000 years after this show and closes the latest Dune movie. Ugh, there is even more wrong with all the Makela nonsense (regarding her interacting with Kiran and her secret knife). Yeah it's bad, gang.

The problem I see is this series is being made for modern audiences and Frank's style does not work for a multi seasonal series that non-Herbert fans can get into. It is the same reason as the changes that happened to the remake series of The Prisoner and the recent Apple+ adaptation of Asimov's Foundation. For this series to be successful it must tone down the high mindedness and make it accessable to new fans, thus the more Game of Thornes in space concept. Seriously, I doubt it will continue after season 2...

Everyone said Foundation couldn't be adapted for TV, and they were right. Apple had to change fundamental aspects of that story to make it work, and the end result? Abomination! I would only trust Denis with that material, and it seems his Golden Path ends after Messiah.

I am not invested in the characters. If they want to portrait the Bene Gesserit as an awful bunch then that is working out pretty well. The acolytes are a mouthy bunch that don't know their place. The finger touch they do before "Truth Saying" is annoying me to no end. The Emperor is weak, his daughter is another girl boss and her open defiance against the emperor and her family without punishment is frustrating. The son feels very 2 dimensional. the wife seems somewhat interesting. The dude has some mystery box going for him. the atreides also seems to be a flat character. If this show is about the Sisterhood then I am missing the gravitas I would expect of that order.

I definitely agree on the style of writing between Brian and frank is extremely jarring. I have only ready one of the Brian books, the one that was written to close/finish the overall saga and I found the style such a jarring contract to the original frank Herbert novels that I have never bothered to read any of the other books written by Brian. And this coming from a huge longtime fan of the original frank Herbert books. Regarding the TV show I'm not sure its failure is in choosing a frank or Brian approach to storytelling. Although that choice should obviously be a frank approach. The TV show falls flat for me with the quality of acting and storylines of the younger actors involved. A 6 episode series is ridiculously short for this material and cramming superfluous and weak characters and storylines into such a short series is just wasteful and detracts from the stronger ones.

If I look back at Season 1 of STTNG vs its final Season, Season 1 is practically pathetic with characters being so wooden and 1 dimensional. The same was true on GoT. My favorite book is God Emperor of Dune, but I’m a fan of both the original series and the subsequent additions. I believe they are fundamentally different. It’s understandable that there’s some aversion to the prequels ( not all of the newer books are great), but they still expand the universe in interesting ways. I’ve also noticed a fixation on encyclopedic details and rigid dogmas, which I suspect Frank Herbert wouldn’t have supported. There are even genuine “Herbertian fundamentalists.” If I were Frank Herbert, I’d be pleased to see my son broadening the universe I created.

"Spoonfeeding" I attribute this to the current almost obsession to super detailed world building. Sadly, because of Tolkein (I love Tolkein's works) the audience expects these giant extremely detailed worlds. This is also manifested in the obsession with the scientific accuracy or the requirement of explanations (as you mention midichlorians) in science fiction stories. Also evidenced by the book (which I bought) on the science of Nolan's Interstellar. I attribute this to many people's lack of imagination. I attribute this to not having read much as a child when your imagination tends to run wild. But then again, I was reading Edith Hamilton's Mythology at 8. In sum, I prefer Frank Herbert's style. I adapted the anti-fear manta for a different purpose: “I must not be woke. Woke is the mind-killer. Woke is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my woke. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the woke has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

I have only read the first Dune novel, seen the 80s film, and the new films. My friends and I, all of which have similar experiences, have thoroughly enjoyed the show. Maybe we're simple or maybe those that have read everything came with extra baggage. I don't think the explanation (if that's where it's headed) of the Litany Against Fear loses anything by coming from an actual ailment. The Bene Gesserit can control their bodies at the molecular level, a Litany that focuses the mind to purge fear is still fucking awesome regardless of its origins. It doesn't undermine the mysticism. My biggest complaint is the 6 episodes, if they had a few more perhaps the flashbacks could've been reworked/put in earlier and the main narrative more focused. Also don't think the Dune universe is appealing to general audiences in the slightest. It's very dense and overwhelming to new comers. My parents have to pause every episode to ask questions when I'm there or write up questions to ask me later. They love the 80s film, not big on the new ones and kind of enjoy the show. That's general audiences. My dad said "if not for you, I'd given up after episode one."

Dune Prophecy is its own thing. I believe the screen writers borrowed a number of elements from both Dune, and The Expanded Dune prequels, to write their own tale, while totally disregarding that some devices/characters don't even fit the timeline and shouldn't possibly exist 10 millennia before Paul Atreides, particularly a face dancer. Dune Prophecy's timeline can be placed decades after the events of Great Schools of Dune (Sisterhood, Mentats and Navigators) so it makes further easier for the producers to create their own plot, without having to face the backlash that infamous Benioff and Weiss had to endure after butchering A somg Of Ice and Fire in the Game Of Thrones HBO series.

I want to love this show so bad. I've watched every episode and hoped and hoped it would get better. I watched a cut of some scenes from game of thrones and it's insane the difference in lighting and photography style. This shows lighting is so flat and dull everything looks like a low budget soap opera where they light everything with super flat even lighting. Even when dealing with the Benegeserite the lighting is so so boring. It's like they just set up the same lights in every scene. I don't understand how they could have compared this to GOT and thought it has anywhere near the quality...this could have been a hundred billion dollar hit like GOT but they went ahead with a grey flat student version instead of giving it a real chance..sigh. The actors don't seem to be used to their ability at all. Compare one scene of this show to something like Vikings and it is so stilted and emotionless. It's just so sad. I hope they try again with a different team with a different story. Please don't give up on Dune because you f'd up the first try! Seems like the team have been mucked around but so many things like the timing of the show being green lit and having to adapt it to be closer to the movies. And exactly as you say everything is spoon fed and boring.

I only read two of the B. Herbert and Andersen novels. The "Machine Crusade" and "The Butlerian Jihad", I enjoyed them but it wasn't F. Herbert. I believe they're going their own way. It is adapting Dune theme stories into a TV series format. That process will lose F. Herbert mystic.

Now I get why you're not a fan of the Brian Herbert/Kevin Anderson books. Makes sense, but I had never thought of it that way. I just liked hearing about what led up to Dune, even if some of it was just plain silly (the cymeks were just goofy). However, I think the show took it further than BH/KA ever did. Shame, because even foe someone who didn't read the books, the idea that you can't let fear/anxiety rule you is still accessible. For me, someone who's read all the books too, it's just boring. I get why you don't care for the BH/KA, but at least they're not boring. They should have just done the Butlerian Jihad, imo. Fits more within a TV series format.

Show's not bad I find, despite the fact that it strays considerably from Frank's work and does not convey its minimalist mystique. It's part Villeneuve, part Game of Thrones in space I find; not very original but fairly entertaining.

The show should sever ties with the films. Be it's own thing.
@mewhennoКүн бұрын
Imo it should have cut ties with the BH prequels as well. I was hoping for something more original and based on Frank Herbert's most essential, basic lore notions. Maybe sprinkle in some small details from McNelly's Encyclopedia and Brian Herbert's novels, but that should have been it. This feels more like another prequel than its own thing.

I don't mind that there will be a season 2, I don't hate the show or anything. It's definitely missing the ways they did the movies but it's a TV show and they had a bunch of delays and stuff maybe with a second season they can correct their mistakes. Maybe season 2 can add more of Frank's style to it and make the show better. Again I think Desmond Hart is the best character and should show is time on Aarakis

Sometimes life has a way of getting in the way of a good show. Amazon spent a cool 1 Billion to get the rights to the Lord of the Rings books. However they did not had the rights to the Silmarillion or Peter Jackson's movies and aesthetics. This oversight essentially shot the series in the legs before the first draft was written (bad writing, weird thematic choices and poor grasp of the the little source material they had, did not help..). The same thing is happening with Dune: prophecy. The show is done under authorization of the Dune rights owner which includes Brian Herbert. I assume pre-requisites are taking his books as cannon, using characters from these books and doubling down on all of the prequals profoundly dumb plot points. among the many things that make the Dune prequals a dumb down, YA novels IN SPACE are: Desperately having every plot point that was hinted in dune to happen all at once for a few characters. Overexplaining everything (there is an actual page in one of the books, dedicated to the invention of glowglobes. by a main character of course). Profound misunderstanding of the original books (Dune had Zensunnis since religions get splintered, distorted and regrafted in 16 millennia's of human diaspora in space. the Prequals understanding: let's write about ZenShia because imagining is hard). Soap opera level of characters and plots (giant evil robots) It does not surprise me that the Sisterhood is essentially Hogwarts with less quidditch. It does not surprise me that everyone call the worms Shai Hulud, a name used by Fremen only. Some elements did positively surprised me like reverend mothers who used the Rossak poison have natural eyes while the girl who used spice has Ibad eyes, Not showing the guild for the sake of the movies and overall OK aesthetics which kind of remind me of the films. The plot, however, is too simple, and prequel like.

Streaming wars: I think the platforms like Prime, or Crave in Canada that offer other streaming services on their platform will win over the single source streaming. The only platform that I think will buck the trend is Netflix. They are the OG and are years ahead of other single source streamers. Disney+, Paramount+, HBO, etc are no competition for Netflix. Star Wars Midicloriens: each trilogy was to have its own unique over arching themes. Prequels - the force internal. OG: the force external, between things. GL’s Sequel: the galactic force. Of course we never got to see GL’s sequel trilogy and got the Disney Wars Fan Project which was devoid of any mythology and the force became a deus ex device to save the writer from writing a cohesive story and let the writer escape a plot dead end.

this is a really good critique - however I think that the books are the books and fans can get an inflated importance to their own views - dad vs sons books so I think it's not correct to put mysticism and ooh ooh plans within plans yeah that's fine, but it's a bit thoughts and ideas Ivory tower - it's just boring when you aren't able to see more context prophecy - they make their own story it's the best way - it's the golden path

It can be enjoyable if you turn your brain off and just don't think. Even then some things are so obviously stupid that my turned off brain can't ignore. After watching and starting thinking about the show, it seems dumb as fuck

The season has been good. Why are people so damn critical? is not like we're getting good shows nowadays. You guys complain all the time about how bad tv and movies are but when something good comes out if it's not perfect you tear it to pieces.

Right? I actually think the show is very good. I couldn’t care less about how closely matches the books…especially because Frank Herbert didn’t write it
Show is great imo.. agree people gotta learn to accept less than ideal and that goes for most things in life

I think this series compares to rings of power and the periferal. I like what they did with peripheral better. But it really had as little to do with the source material as rings of power. This series is good so far. I agree about don't ruin the mystery, but that's kind of the job of prequels.

I think the show is interesting. I think YOU are like the Star Wats fans who hate the Prequels. Yes, they are slightly flawed, but still interesting in their own right. Just enjoy the show. It’s better than not having a show. I want an answer. I always want answers.

i have no problem with the bh/kja approach, because this is set in that timeline with those characters. i think that those books are much easier to adapt to tv or movies than say god emperor. if you did god emperor as a series, id expect to see frank herbert all over it.

Yet again we have a studio buying a franchise to milk without any care for the canon or fan base. This isn’t the first video I’ve watched where you’ve had trouble with the way a particular franchise was being treated. Have we not seen enough times where this is done. These people don’t care or want to care about the fans or more importantly, writing a good story. I don’t watch any of the adaptations of my favorite franchises anymore for this reason. (Edited for spelling )

I personaly think its okay for them to give us explanations on these details. I see the books as the OG and the movies and show as an ADAPTATION, an interpretation, Its fine if the overall product is enjoyable. Its their vision and its cool to give the audience a bit of their own vision as long as its not absurd. I dont think Frank Herberts or anyones work for that matter is untouchable, I just think the key word is RESPECT, and the show is respectfull imo. I respect your opinion for real, but I realy dont care too much, books like Dune are a very different medium when compared to film and TV.

@BrianHerbertTryant16 сағат бұрын
I proudly gatekeep. The desire to do so comes from how good the original six books are relative to this show. The gap is ocean sized and the books are amazing. The show just "has some cool moments." The books (for many) are life-changing.

I love everything practically and I have very few issues with the show, I know there are those that the material is paramount and I would not like it if the show disrespected Franks work however at least it's Brian's work there basing it on!
