Personally, I preferred Ian Mcniece's Baron Harkonnen. Batista's rendition of Raban was in my opinion the best of that character. You really get how unhinged the Beast really is. Overall, they did a wonderful job, gave only relevant information, didn't bog the story down with techno-babble or needless exposition. I'm not surprised they haven't started production of part 2 yet. Frankly, Sci-Fi is a bit of a dark horse, to be honest.

David Lynchs version #1 hands down. Yes the new one is beautiful but that story has already been told. The new one is an identical remake of David lynchs for the exception of ending. So part two will be a remake of David lynchs ending.imagine if he did the same shit for blade runner.

I watched Dune few hours ago and it was f*cking fantastic! I loved the way the story was beautifully woven and causes you to pay close attention to it. The sheer scope gave me goosebumps during many scenes. I can totally understand why some people may find it slow, but it definitely worked for me all the way. I never read the books but I will now, the world is stunning. I’d comfortably give it a 9/10 right now (just my opinion). I’ve been craving for something with this much thought and budget. Complete euphoria 🤤 Edit: Please watch it on the biggest screen. How the hell ya’ll have nice ass movie theaters next to you and use HBO instead? Smh

I’m honestly worried that a part 2 won’t be greenlit. It’s not because I think the movie is bad it’s just that in this post pandemic age it’s so much harder for movies to make a lot of money like they used to and dune in particular cost a fuck ton of money to produce and market it so I worry that it won’t get the numbers it needs and WB won’t see a sequel as financially beneficial for them

I’m not a Dune fan, never read the books, tried watching the David Lynch movie, but it’s a tough sit for me... I enjoyed this movie for the most part, with the biggest problem being that it’s only half a story and we don’t know if we’re even gonna get the second half or not. My second biggest problem is probably that the story and world-building felt too light for me. I wanted more politics, more religion, more development of that kind of stuff. I’ve always heard Dune is so dense and filled with stuff like that, but this movie felt really sparse IMO. Amazing visuals, epic atmosphere, and some good stuff in it, but I don’t think they really used the screentime all that wisely. For such a long movie based on such dense source material, I feel like it should have been much more packed with information, dialogue scenes, developments between the Atriedies, Harkoennen and Fremen... ultimately the movie mostly feels like just a lot of shots of the desert. Very nice shots of the desert, but... yeah, I just wanted more. It feels like this probably should have just been the whole book in one movie, with a faster pacing and a denser script. I think that would have made a much more satisfying movie. If we never get Part 2, then this movie is ultimately gonna feel like a waste, I think. It can’t really stand on its own. If we do get Part 2 and beyond, then I hope they lean more into storytelling and less on visuals & atmosphere. This movie delivered on that, and it was cool... but hopefully, they don’t keep leaning into that like it’s gonna keep being satisfying, because it’s only satisfying as an introduction to the world. Now I want more story.

You make some excellent points... I never thought of it like that, having myself absolutely devoured all the books in my early 20s (many many years ago). One of the many things that pleased me so much with this movie was how easy it was to follow for those who've never read the books, quite a feat I assure you!!

Gotta read the books. Or at least the first 2. It's been said Dune would never be able to be adapted well to the screen. For what it's worth, I think they did a pretty damn good job considering. I only wish part 2 was already a go and well on its way to being made. They did stop this one in an awkward spot in the saga. Almost seemed like a 2 1/2 hour preface. Which would have been fine had part 2 already been in filming.
@BankMoviegoer
@BankMoviegoer 3 жыл бұрын
Totally see your point here. Kinda felt the same while watching but then I also realised that the film could have been too dense. More dialogues/lore would have honestly confused me, I'm pretty sure, since it already took a lot for me to digest and try to understand the settings/characters (I knew nothing about Dune before seeing it). In the end, I do think they've done their best balancing the two.
@AWSVids
@AWSVids 3 жыл бұрын
@@BankMoviegoer I get that. I agree it would have been hard to digest on first viewing, but then I would have been more inclined to rewatch. I think rewatch value is actually a big part of what’s missing. I feel like I got almost all the substance on first watch, and would only rewatch to enjoy the technical aspects of the film again. A denser film that’s hard to understand invites more rewatching and thinking about it.

Visuly it was done very very well. But as someone who never read the books it was very easy to get lost and, when that happened, it quickly got away from me and became boring. And I think that is why many people are on the fence about this movie. In many ways, with the way the streaming services are creating cinema quality series, I could see this as being an amazing candidate for a many season turn as a series to flesh out characters and the world much better than a film or two could.

Just saw DUNE in IMAX a couple of hours ago and it was spectacular the visuals the storytelling the sound the performances were great. I think Rebecca Ferguson was brilliant as Lady Jessica i felt her fear and pain for her son Paul, Jason Momoa surprised me with his performance to be honest. I was in awe of the look and feel of the movie i felt like i was actually on Arrakis while i was watching the movie there were a couple of jaw dropping moments in the movie as well seeing the sandworm scene in IMAX was just glorious i was thinking this must have been what it felt like when audience members saw the mothership for the first time on the big screen while watching Close encounters of the third kind or seeing the T-REX in Jurassic Park for the first time. Point is see this movie on the biggest screen possible you will be doing yourself a disservice if you don't, we need Part Two of Dune to happen if it doesn't it would be simply tragic....... and another thing it's really easy to follow lol coming from someone who has never read the books lol.......

The movie was definitely made for people who have read the book. So I really enjoyed it. But I wonder how much non-book readers understood the Landsraad, Spacing Guild, Bene Gesserit, the Missionaria Protectiva, the voice, the weirding way, and the spice. In fact, I don't think they said anything about the interaction between shields and lasguns. They didn't mention the Butlerian Jihad either. And I'm assuming they're saving a lot of exposition for the sequel. But I do wonder if they'll explain the OCB, Zensunni and how religions in Dune are sort of a mix of different religions of today.

I think it was pretty well made for people who know nothing of the universe. I haven't read the book but I watched a bunch of videos online in preparation so it was fine for me. I went to see it with my dad & sister both of which didn't know anything about it and went in 100% blind and afterward they both said it was amazing and the plot was very easy to understand and follow.

That's the thing though, you don't need to understand all those things to follow the movie. There is way too much detail in the book to fully explain in a movie, so some of those elements can remain little flavors in the movie that aren't necessary to understand, but if you want to know more you can go and read the book.

This is one of the great problems of adapting any of the Dune novels. It's such a vast universe and much of it is exposited over millenia in the novels. Very intriguing and heady but difficult to directly adapt to visual medium. I think a series like The Sisterhood that was mentioned as being in development could be a great way to truly tell about the Dune universe through following one group of Bene Jeseret and exposition of their secrets similar to Chapterhouse.

Let me help answer the question abt being able to appreciate this film with no knowledge of source material. I have seen Dune twice now with a third viewing soon to follow, and I absolutely ADORE IT. I really do not want this to come across as pretentious but this to me is the epitome of Cinema. The direction and cinematography is amazing, the sound design is just Hans Zimmer at his all time best, and the performances were outstanding with the entire cast hitting on all cylinders. This film transformed me from someone who had absolutely no knowledge or investment in the source material to being absolutely enamored by this universe and was utterly captivated by the world building done in this film. This movie is solidly in my Top 25 favorite movies I have ever seen. I cannot wait for part 2. Seriously it is not even in production yet ..... P A I N.

Knowing the story, realizing what was going on in the previews, knowing exactly what was going to happen didn't stop ANY of the emotional gut punches that happened. The sets, the cast, the acting, everything was amazing in this adaptation. I also agree - what bonehead didn't push for part 2 to go into production either after part 1 finished, or a simultaneous shoot. Then again we are talking about WB.

I'm torn. It was a fantastic half of a movie. As a stand-alone movie, it does have a lot of problems but had the other part been added to it, and we had the 5-hour version (part 1 & 2), it would have been amazing. As a stand-alone movie, it really drags though, and spends the first half of the movie primarily on setup. I personally love fantasy movies, and I can forgive the world-building, but the people I saw it with thought it was slow and boring - until midway through, but by then they were already tuned out of the film. And I have the impression that a lot of 'normal' people share that view, unfortunately, and I fear that that type of reception might hinder part 2 from ever getting greenlit.

It is absolutely insane that I sat through 2 and a half hours of film, and at the end of it my primary question is "what was this film about". Not in a thought provoking, 'i have to think over and digest this' kind of way, but the kind of way where I have no idea what the point of watching the film was. I am trying so hard to think of a character arc, a theme, a political message, anything that would motivate people to remake this story outside of the book being popular. All I can think is this was a bunch of set up to a 2nd part which hasn't been greenlit yet, that fails to live on its own merits. I'm serious, someone please tell me why I'd be motivated to care through all this tensionless and easily resolved string of action scenes, because I'm struggling to keep myself sane that anyone else could enjoy this film without taking a nap. Also, easiest paycheck of Zendaya's career. If the production wanted to save money, they could have replaced her with a carboard cut out. It's not like her acting skills were required to stand around in flash forwards which had zero function in the narrative.

@@markdukakis1003 I can tell what the allegory is supposed to be. Spice is oil in the middle East, the desert people are Iraqis, the Empire is America. And that's where the analogy breaks down. Paul and his people are a neutral third party which want to mutually and peacefully build up the desert peoples economic wealth. Who are they? The answer is no one. So what is the point of using science fiction to create an analogy to real world events, when your fictional world you created doesn't reflect the real world? Who knows. The film tells you in the opening monologue that the desert people are good and the Empire is bad, so there's no moral argument or struggle throughout the film. The morality is more black and white than original trilogy star wars, a franchise which was actually able to keep it's real world analogies consistent. So the film has no historical argument, and it makes no moral argument. So what's the point of bring up capitalist colonial exploitation of sovereign nations resources, if you're not going to use any of your story to explain why that's bad, how the occurs, or how to stop it? Because guess what, the solution to colonialism isn't to cross bloodlines to genetically engineer a psychic nobleman. Yeah, the solution to Imperialism is actually eugenics apparently. See, part 2 could come out and all my questions could be answered, and I could completely understand the metaphorical significance of all these details. These answer may be sitting in the book right this very second. But until I watch that second film, I can only interpret these events as literal, because the first film hasn't given me enough pieces to complete the puzzle. Like why spice doubles as both rocket fuel and a hallucinogetic. Is this a metaphor for the profits oil causes being addictive to capitalists and the reason why they're so willing to colonise and oppress native populations? Nope, because the one who gets addicted to spice is Paul, whose one of the good guys looking to peacefully work with the desert people. Which means it's only a hallucinogen as a justification for the plot mechanic flashbacks which do nothing to affect the plot whatsoever.

He literally starts off as a prince duke and ends up part of a cult from the desert with his mom ,as a the supposed future leader" That's not a character arc, that's a plot arc. At no point does Paul's character change whatsoever. Paul struggles with if he's worthy to be a leader, his father tells him he does not need to be one because being his son is enough. Paul goes through a bunch of action scenes and acts in self preservation. Then he gets forced into a contest for leadership out of ignorance of the desert peoples customs, wins effortlessly, and is forced into the position outside of his own volition. Paul's "arc" is surrendering to fate and the whims of nature, "letting the desert take you" like he does in the thunderstorm. His character arc is to stop caring and just go with the flow bro. A character who is completely uninvested in the conflict or the moral question of the conflict, despite being the chosen one to end the conflict.
