At this moment, it’s painful clear to all that the Emperor sided with the Harkonnens against the House Atreides. No monarch would allow a critical resource for their civilization to be sabotaged like that unless they stood to benefit from it.

Ironically, per the books, this would be the downfall of the reigning Emperor ultimately. This is somewhat covered in the original Dune films also. This sort of move basically pisses every major power player outside the imperial court. Its actually kind of funny.

I assume the only reason the Atredies didn't report it to the wider imperium is because to do so would unite all the great houses against the emperor. Which sounds great at first glance until a massive civil war starts and billions die and many worlds are destroyed.

Everybody knew that this was a move meant to put the Atreides on the back foot, give them too much of a load to bear, and put a target on their back, all at once. The first hour of this movie is everybody telling Paul right after another that they're walking into a trap. What they don't know is that the Emperor hasn't just thrown them into the fire, but has ACTIVELY sided with the Harkonnen against them by bolstering their troops with Sardaukar and coordinating an overwhelming military strike to eliminate the entire house in a single night.

Using the units per silo from AMS, the information that dune years are earth years, and the 10 billion solaris a year figure, a unit is worth approximately 2.5k solaris. Given apparently each of those silos hold 700 units, a suitcase of spice seems close to one unit visually within 1-2 orders of magnitude. That does not seem close to enough solaris to buy planets with so the stated profit numbers seem low for the monthly spice shipment volume. Not that the Atreides folks needed spice or its profits anyway, they're rich enough to build a force as formidable as the universe's finest and hire the most talented men the Imperium has to offer. At the end of the day, it was the Harkonnens who actually ironically suffered more as they had wasted 60 years worth of profits that Vlad had to short his spice stock to sell more expensive, only served to further weaken his position more when the Fremen later counterattack within 5 years. Both Harkonnens and Corrinos wound up kicking their own balls.

@choysakanto actually the Harkonnens controlled Dune for 80 years, according to Gurney Halleck. Give or take they are sitting on 800 billion solaris, minus expenses possibly. Now it's somewhat unclear if he means gross income or net profit but still, if gross income was 800 billion. It makes sense just how they were able to afford that big sneak attack, and why later on in the film the old Harkonnen was so desperate to return to a stable and sizeable income.

At the same time planting the idea that 'our leaders are so competent, even their children thwart the efforts of our enemies.' This was about morale. Purpose. Projecting steadfastness and strength. It was absolutely the right tactic of dialoge to set the stage for the meeting. We have serious things to discus. But we are not paranoid children. I understand it's a movie, but my only gripe with it is how easily the Atreides was destroyed. They had everything on their side. They had the terrain, they had the advanced warning (They knew it was coming before they even left for Harrakis), they had what was considered the universes finest military and they were somehow, someway surprised by an invasion in the dead of night. It's like, come on... This is your version of pearl harbor? I dunno, it all seemed really contra to the set up. Why place them as such a formidable military force if they're going to be bent over by such an obvious and expected strike?
@pinecactus9672

They were betrayed from within from the person they expected the least. The equivalent of spies opening the castle gates in the middle ages. The doctor dropped their city Shields and fed information to the harkonnens. Unfortunately there is a lot of details in the books that's left out of the movies. Hyperspace travel is done almost exclusively through the space guild so the great houses don't really have fleets they can post in orbit. There's a whole bunch of in story reasons for this both cultural, religion and technological. As well universe technology is high-tech/dumb tech again due to cultural, religious reasons which is weirdly strictly enforced. This makes sense in the books but not properly explained in the movies. Because of that there isn't much in the sense of orbital defense and warning systems so if the guild helps you in your cause you can literally sneak up in orbit of your enemy and drop on them. Again not explained well but the emperor and the harkonnens basically paid ludicrous bribes to the guild to help them.

I have always felt that Thufir wasnt as good a mentat as everybody felt. He figured the wrong person to be the traitor (Jessica) and he was far too reliant on the shield staying up as a sort of total defence. To him it was inconceivable that the shield would fall and that there would be a direct assault on the Capital. Even with the enemy mentats, like Piter, feeding him bad information or pulling off impossible tricks like breaking Suk conditioning, he should have hedged his bets or set up some fallbacks. The Emperor's plan wasnt really rocket science and if the Atreides spy network was even slightly competent, it should have caught wind of it. Had he been a "twisted" mentat like Piter, he might have actually seen it coming. Their strength seemed to be that they could think "outside the box" of their calculations and were able to draw on their emotional flaws for a level of unpredictability or attempting to mess with things seen as impossible or generally agreed on as facts (suk conditioning). Thufir just couldnt compute that he was wrong and running the numbers again just got the same results for him. Even so, he should have had a "top 5" list of likely enemy attack options and shutting down the shield somehow should have been pretty high up there, even if it wasnt Jessica who was to do it.

The Atreides knew Arrakis was a trap, but they believed it would be a trap years in the making. They weren't expecting the Emperor to actively throw his weight behind the Harkonnen and supply them with the elite troops necessary to wipe the Atreides off the map in a single day. They were expecting machinations and sabotage, not a military blitzkrieg.
@Vilakazi
@Vilakazi Жыл бұрын
@@gabe9125 in reality though, the emperor would've been confident about taking out the Atreides in a day but when it came down to it, it would turn out to be a hard dull slog like the Ukrainian war is today. I honestly didn't like how the Atreides fell in a day, it should've been a slow burn of a war that eventually ended such a great house after atleast a week of hide and seek between the soldiers up in the rocks and mountains or ended the emporers reigne it it's totality had the laansgrad united against the emperor.

It wasn't their own military power that bothered the Emperor, the emperor was pissed because Leto had designed of desert power using the Fremen, which was sought out before Arrakis in the novels. The Emperor saw that like his Sardaukar were created on the prison planet: Salusa Secundus by its harsh environment, the Fremen were also warriors created by the harshness of their world, he saw it being a threat to his power. The first film kinda showed this but they made it into the Atreides creating sound/voice weaponry. This film has not really given a good account of why the assassination needed to happen.

This is one of the scenes that felt hard done compared to the book. In the book it’s a whole chapter, and it’s where we get to see how great and effective a leader was Duke Leto. A lot more goes on, and while I totally understand the decision, it still kinda sucks. The movie did as good a job as possible of adapting Dune, but there’s so much good shit they had to cut.

Feels like a huge waste of time just to prove a point. It was probably important for the viewer to grasp the scale of the issue but from a management perspective, it's a idiotic. A "We need to fill X silos with spice every 25 days but we are only able to fill 1/20X silo" would have sufficed.

It's because of shield technology. Personal shields stop fast moving things like bullets, but allow slow moving things through (including air, otherwise they would suffocate).
