Great video. Really interesting points you make about prequels. This vid is making me now think about getting this book. Bit confused though, you said at 1:52 that you’ve not read these books but by the end of the video it sounds like you have read this one. Did you mean you haven’t read the prequel trilogy but have read this (Butlerian Jihad) one? Please clarify. Again really enjoyed watching and hearing you speak about this book and anything Dune related. Thanks

Keeping on the topic of whether these sequels are necessary, I haven’t read the rest of the Dune sequels actually written by Herbert and I don’t think you’ve talked about them. Speaking to someone who adored the original Dune and it’s lore, would you recommend continuing on? At least with those remaining five?

As long as there's money to be made prequels will prevail.

Good video. I've read all the Brian/Kevin Dune novels. Some of them are bad, and some of them are fantastic. I don't think anyone can compare to the genius of Frank Herbert, So I understand why people think they are no good... BUT, they're solid books when compared to other contemporary science fiction. If you accept that Frank Herbert is gone, and we won't get him back, you can enjoy many of these novels. I think the Jihad trilogy are required reading if you want to read their two novels that finish off Frank's story: Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune. The others you can ignore. But the historical trilogies that tell the story of how the universe got to where it is are all very good. The books that fill in the gaps between Franks novels are bad... I recommend NOT reading them at all haha. And NO, they don't "necessarily" break existing cannon. They DO go against a lot of what was in the Dune Encyclopedia, which also ISN'T Cannon.

În what order should i read the books? should i start with the prequel books?
@NotQuiteGuru

@@tashatectretius5718 Good question. IMO, absolutely start with Frank's Books. See if you enjoy the subject matter. Start with Dune, Messiah, Children, and God Emperor. If you make it that far then you are one of the few and proud. The Dune series is not for everyone, that is for sure. Dune feels like a standard sci-fi book with hints of Herbert's genius, but the rest delve into intellectual genius, with philosophy, sociology, biology, political science, and ecology... in a cool way if you can believe that, but this turns a lot of people off who require a more shallow experience. Not a burn if it's not for you. AFTER God Emperor, if you really like what you're reading, then by all means, continue with Heretics and Chapterhouse. BUT if you need a bit of a break from the heavy handedness, I recommend reading the Prelude to Dune trilogy (House Atreides, Harkonnen, Corrino) if you want familiar characters, or go 10,000 years back with the Legends of Dune trilogy (Butlerian Jihad, Machine Crusade, Battle of Corrin) which starts the story of how the empire got to how it is. I think these 6 novels are very good, AND I like to think of reading them as we're reading the journals and histories as told by Paul's son, Leto II, the God Emperor. Your call, but when I re-read the series (I do every few years), here's my read order: (Initial Story Real-Time) *Dune* *Dune Messiah* *Children of Dune* *God Emperor of Dune* (Flashback as told by the greatest historian in the universe, Leto II) *The Butlerian Jihad* *The Machine Crusade* *The Battle of Corrin* *The Sisterhood of Dune* *Mentats of Dune* *Navigators of Dune* (Jump forward a bit to the decades before Dune starts) *House Atreides* *House Harkonnen* *House Corrino* (then Jump back to the Real-Time story after God Emperor) *Heretics of Dune* *Chapterhouse; Dune* *Hunters of Dune* *Sandworms of Dune* I always ignore: Paul of Dune The Winds of Dune I just don't like them, but to each his own. There are also books of short stories that I also enjoy: Tales of Dune and Sands of Dune but you don't need them unless you're craving more. The chances of you getting this far is pretty slim, most people aren't "hard" enough hahaha. Don't get the Dune Encyclopedia, unless you've decided you don't want to ready any of Brian Herbert's books. It's NOT cannon, no matter what some people say, but it's good enough for cannon if you stop reading at Frank's 6 books. And THAT publication has done a lot of damage to the Dune community. It's essentially fan-fiction that Frank approved of, but said he found them "fascinating" and "amusing". For many including me, this is all I had for a long time until Brian Herbert started writing his novels with Kevin J Anderson. There are lots of contradictions between Brian's books and the Encyclopedia. So, read it if you're really dying for more Dune to consume, like I and many others were. I hope you enjoy the series, and truly consider the wisdom that can be found within. In putting this list together I realized there are 4 Dune novels I haven't read: Princess of Dune The Duke of Caladan The Lady of Caladan The Heir of Caladan Which I've just ordered a few minutes ago. Sorry, that was way more than you asked for. But once I got started, I simply couldn't stop =)

@@NotQuiteGuru i know that frank wanted to make a 7th book and that hunters and sandworms considered in line with the themes of the previous books?

@@tashatectretius5718 They do and they don't. This is hotly debated. It's truly unfortunate that Frank died before completing the last novel of his epic. Hunters and Sandworms are ok, the do capture the tone (imo), but also feel lacking. I personally like where they went with the ending, but am a little disappointed with how they accomplished the ending. Their ending is better than many series endings, and worse than others. I don't know what else to say without spoilers. I for one am glad I read it and happy that there is a cannon wrap of the entire millenium spanning story. But I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Most people don't get that far. I'll keep an eye out for your response in 2 years ;) Good Luck!!

PS. The Dune Prequels are however a better idea than Star Wars as they are set 10,000 years earlier and not 20. You do not just know exactly what will happen in the end.

No, we do not need prequel novels/films, especially not if the Prequels tell a completely different story as Star Wars does. LOTR is another matter because we already have those stories - like Beren & Luthien - but they were not conceived of as Prequels but already existed independently.

Prequels are tricky business. They've always come off as just "more" of a world or subject. Typically aimed at the super fan that wants more of that world despite the story been told. I can't think of a prequel series that blew me away, or capture the magic of the original. However, I'm always down for recommendations.

When you give só many 10 out of 10 its dificulte to understand your favourites. Having watch all your reviews and being Here for at least a year and half if a novel is not 10 I don't think I will purchase them lol But now I see something different you usually don't do and it was interesting to see-You compare two novels and this got 7,75 which is a bad rating for you. Recently I noticed that my 10 and 9 mostly were on my early reading times. This last two years Ive read around 150 novels and only gave a 10. It seems it's getting very infrequently to give good ratings because I am always comparing to other novels. How do you keep a fresh mind , since as you said no reset button. How do you not fall into the trap into comparing novels , your favorite and new novels you read?
