I haven't read the books, but I always thought that the worms "processed" the sand that went thru them and "expelled" it, creating the "spice" or manure. Kinda how earth worms do it. So Spice = Dung

To be specific each time they eat dirt they give birth to sandtrout and every time the polar water drips on the surface in certain areas it hits the sandtrout creates a spice blow and they explode like a one megatonish explosion creating spice. I am a desert creature
