Dung Beetle facts: the poop rollers (and more!) | Animal Fact Files

Dung beetles have fascinated humans for centuries. Their curious behavior of rolling around balls of poo have captivated our imaginations, but this is only part of the dung beetle story. There are three types of dung beetles, and not all of them roll around balls. Some of them burrow under poo piles and some even live in the patty itself! There are even some "dung" beetle species who don't deal with poop at all!
Scientific Name: Subfamily - Scarabaeinae; and others
Range: worldwide except Antartica
Size: 1-2 inches (2.54-5cm)
Diet: dung, fungi, other arthropods
Lifespan: up to 3 years
