Dungeon Keeper is Gone, But it Has a Strategy Heir in Dungeons 4

I played a few levels of the OG Dungeon Keeper just the other day. All these years later and it still gives me an itch I must scratch,

Improvements over D3: 1. Snots mine all machines so creatures are free to attack without holding back production 2. Potion factory. Potions can now be produced like toolboxes where you will get random potions that are added to a separate menu like spells for things like healing, speed, attack damage, etc. 3. Magic batteries. Magic batteries are produced like toolboxes which can be dropped on any machine a snot works which will make it run automatically and much faster for a period of time 4. Undead enemies. You can turn dead enemies into troops (as many as you want with a device built). No more torture conversion with limited troops 5. Evil is now gained through pure conquest. You can fight special creatures (which regenerate) to get a big evil bump but no more islands or anything 6. Blight. Blight is used by undead to generate minions in battle. All undead get them. The minions change by undead 7. Horde are very cheap. Since Horde creatures die easy they are much cheaper compared to demons and especially undead. 8. Special items. Now you can find certain items in the dungeon and if you drop them in your evil storage room they'll give you a buff. 9. Thalia has more abilities including a spell to transport her and anyone by her to the Dungeon Heart using evil. I'm sure there are plenty more but these come to mind

Have not played this yet but I really loved Dungeons 3, and I've been really impressed with how the studio stuck with something they love and steadily improved with each new game. Dungeons 1 was pretty bad, and I expected the studio to just move on to something else but nope, they kept on going and now probably have one of the best successors to Dungeonkeeper our there.

D4 is great. I didn't notice how much better it was until I was going through the campaign and saw all the improvements. It's the best type of upgrade. Keeps what worked, improvement what didn't and make everything bigger. I just wished they'd bring back the rally flag. It's irritating having to drop your creatures.

Wanderbots played this in co-op and mentioned that the "Ultimate Evil's" hands should be a right and left hand, and that it'd be great if there were different skins for those hands; and I couldn't agree more. Alternate skins for the monsters you control would be a fun DLC too; as would alternate roles/playstyle/plotline (also suggested by Wander) like a Mother Nature overlord, or (as I was thinking) a Lich/Mummy Lord, Eldritch Abomination, or SkyWeb (SkyNet) Evil Technology overlord (maybe in some future Dungeons game).

People always say that games like this are "spiritual successors" and whatnot, but I never see it. Yeah, it's the same genre, but it doesn't feel like Dungeon Keeper to me. Though, Dungeon Keeper to me is DK1 (I never actually played DK2, but it does seem closer to these games). But DK1 had a darker tone that none of these other games replicate. All the darkness is gone and exchanged with more bright and shiny humor. That's fine and all, but the entire point of DK1 was to be some sort of dark lord that hates all things bright and shiny and funny, and that itself brought dark humor to the game. I miss that feeling. War for the Overworld is probably the closest game to that feeling, but it's not quite there.

Finished if yesterday. Here are my thoughts They reworked the economy where mostly all snots are the ones handling resource production We now have potions that work similar with spells for the horde faction They added dwarves underground Max 3 perks per battle unlocked via finishing the campaign mission achievements We can now automate without workers with magic batteries New spells Now onto the bad experiences: The graphics options are really non existent Over time and whenn u reach late game, the game slows down to a slog where i get too much command delay due to the amount of particles and units in the dungeon Less unit variety (only horde faction evolves) Research trees feel unfinished esp undead Fewer trap variations Story is 5/10 at most Crashes I really loved dungeons 3 and its dlc’s but my main gripe is still the graphic options especially late game where everything becomes a powerpoint presentation. Gameplay is still good but I felt they removed some of the good features in the previous games while also adding new ones. Humor is hit and miss. Also there’s one specific line at the later missions which may spark some “controversy” regarding how Thalya adresses a certain character. Overall a 7/10 for me and still longing for DLC(which was hinted at the end) and hotfixes to fix my main issues with the game.

Humor and story is definitely "you will hate it or you will love it" thing, and very cheesy. I liked it but can totally see someone being cringed to oblivion by it. And, well, if someone didn't play Warcraft 3 they will miss like 80% of the jokes...

​@@beerkenstein Well it's more of the same, there are some changes but nothing revolutionary. There is more happening in the underground part, recruiting heroes got moved into undead tree while torture room is for extracting evility, undeads now have unit that heals them, and few other changes I don't remember off a top of my head. Thalya got few extra skills, and some passives you can pick after winning optional challenges to levels so you can tailor it a bit to the build you want. It is very much "Dungeons 3 but more and a bit prettier", evolution of the genre, not anything revolutionary. But also best one in series so far.

The traps can completely destroy the invaders. Build a loop of slime 1x1, buzzsaw walls with a spike 3x1 inside it. The pusher when you can't use the buzzsaws. The slime will slow them for about 4 tiles. Bigger groups can get split up and the ones in front will wait on traps or lava for them to catch up. You can also connect all exits in a tunnel around the dungeon with only one access tunnel to the dungeon heart with your Workshop near the dungeon heart side of that tunnel for quicker trap repairs. Test this in the Dream Dungeon skirmish map to get a good feel for the strategy. This is more difficult to setup on some campaign maps with hectic assaults or time restraint objectives but if successful can drastically improve your dungeon defense. Don't try to que the entire trap loop at once unless you have already become rich as it will drain your gold and occupy your snots. Also, you will see how far heroes can get and don't need to waste resources far past that point.

I totally agree. It's not a bad game. And the overworld elements are what we hoped for from a Dungeon Keeper 3. War for the Overworld contains more of the Dungeon Keeper feel for me than Dungeons 1-4 does. However, i would never refuse anything that encourages the Dungeon Keeper legacy. I would rather have 100 Dungeons versions with tons of annoying DLC than none at all.

I found out a while back that there is/was actually a mobile version of Dungeon Keeper that I got some of my friends to play. The divice I had it on got torched so I haven't checked up on it in a while though so I'm not sure if it's still a thing or not. I do still havr the disc ver of DK2Gold ED somewhere... I recently came across Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain on GOG for about $2.00 I put a lot of time into that on PS1.

Treasury should be built around goldveins to minimise travel time for the snots. they need to unload in a treasury and having the treasury around a goldveing make them mine faster. you get gold slower if you dont have a treasury around a goldvein.

Oh yeah. Dungeon Keeper was THE GAME back in the 90s, so, this being its successor, its a no-brainer pick for me. Definately gonna buy it. Great to see the old mechanics still being applied here, though I'd still like to see how the "incarnate" spell would look like nowadays. The option to go inside a minion and control in first person was groundbreaking at the time, and still is in some ways, as I haven't seen many other strategy games using this feature over the years.

This feature does not exist in this game. What the game does instead is that it gives you direct RTS-type control of your whole army when you are above the ground and classic pick-and-drop control while underground. But it has lots of things going for itself. You should for sure give it a try if you like DK-type games.

No, you have to have the hand you just have options for what it looks like. There are mechanics with slapping monsters and picking somethings up so I doubt that will change.

Like this, you have this big laggy annoying thing following your cursor thats bigger and easier to see than your cursor and gets in the way of the screen like a big damn fly buzzing about. They have always had this complaint- cant believe they just let it stand.

you are not wrong per say but not right neither. to continue from my other reply to your comment on another comment you post, WftO is how a 50 y/o dad trying to get hip like his some the dungeon series and actually nailed it. so yea its still amazing until it start to lag when you have way too many minions moving around in a 1 or 2 ish space corridors. not sure if it get new patch for it or not but still enjoyable. 👍👍👍

@@ravezon dungeon games solve that problem by giving you ridiculously low number of creatures, so it's not really such a big upgrade over lag when you have ridiculous numbers, what happens only if you stay in the same mission for too long. I would say that WftO is better heir to the Dungeon Keeper, but Dungeons series is still quite good, if a little bit shallow. I'm having a blast with D3/D4/WftO in last months. The humor is much better in WtfO, I think that Dungeons went too much into the child's cartoon kind of humor that makes mi cringe over every dialogue line that happens.

Ive noticed a trend that kind of irks me. This cartoonish style thats popped up in the last decade. Like this game is very clearly aping Dungeon Keeper. But if you go back and play Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2, youll notice the stark difference between them and this game. The graphics may be crunchy, but they convey the dark "evil" tone just as well. The foreboding music, the shadows and oppressive atmosphere, the gore effects. Theres something that has definitely been lost over the years, from Heroes of Might and Magic 3, to Warcraft 3 to Dungeon Keeper. The older graphics of those games had an "edgier" look to them thats been lost to this cartoonish bright pallet of soft models. Reminiscent of mattel and hasbro toys more than the subject material theyre trying to convey. I cant be the only one who thinks like this though, can i?

No, it's not just you. Ever since Warcraft went from imitating realism to the low poly cartoonish oversized limbs and bright colors of WC3s final release and more importantly, World of Warcraft later on ( which in turn became the most influential game for art style after) as well as the general trends taking place in comics and other art forms towards a semi futuristic very shiny, bright, vibrant, stylized, rounded corner look and then the policitized mass employment of female artists who obviously did not grow up consuming or admiring all those dark and gritty 90s games and comics, this not only left us with a decade of feminine looking gritless games, it so thoroughly altered the landscape of video game art that we almost can't think of any iconic character designs or art styles in the past 15 years. Even our "kids" content back then often had references to dominatrizes, sex and cigarettes, there was no shying away from glorifying traditional masculinity. Then at some point they decided to make everything for 4 year olds so they can sell stuff to kids even when it's intended for adults and make the art palatable to women and we got this

Dungeons 3 was cool where I sort of loved the story but the above ground combat requires you to be above ground so it's almost impossible to build the dungeon properly. and you could not pause. So I want to like it but I thought they've been moving away from 'strategy' the entire time

Pause is one of features I'd very much like in it. But once you get teleport spell it''s not really that big of an issue as you can always go back to your dungeon with your army and go back to overworld. It does get a bit frantic at times but I don't think that's a bad thing.

My biggest gripe with dungeon keeper was that it was just to short and easy. Then campaign is great but the replay-ability suffers. You play through the campaign in something like 10-20h and then there is nothing to do more. There are no challenging sandbox modes, multiplayer or otherwise.

Do I understand this correct the TLDR is: With every Dungeons iteration, it got more like Dungeon Keeper and less like what it was in Dungeons 1? I only played the first one.

@@Memn4rch I mean if you want to see the whole story of the Absolute Evil (which is more or less who you play as) it start with D2. But I do not think it is needed. Although the stories are connected they are not something you really need to do. I would skip 2 for sure. D3 and D4 are quite similar but D4 is an upgrade in every way.
