Just to clarify for those that don't know because it can be confusing. When they are talking about Tabaxi in Chult they are not talking about the catfolk that you can play in DnD. Tabaxi is the race of humans that are the Forgotten Realm's equivalent to Meso-Americans. I don't know why they have the same name as the catfolk but there you go.
@brianroberts78311 ай бұрын
As I recall, the Human Tabaxi often wear the skins of leopards, Jaguars, tigers, etc. When explorers first encountered the cat-folk, they mistook them for humans wearing cat skins, and so called them Tabaxi as well. It's kinda the Forgotten Realms version of calling Native Americans "Indians."

There are 100% classic tabaxi in chult. There is the assassin in Omu as one example
@ChantillyVenus10 ай бұрын
@@joshuatitler3952There absolutely are, but in the context of talking about the Ring the Tabaxi in question are humans. Mezro is populated by human Chultans entirely. (Ring of Winter is a favorite FR book of mine.)

Loves this episode. I ran TOA as my first DMing experience, and Artus was by far my favorite NPC, as well as his companion, to run. Levels 11+ will be about traveling the multiverse and finding his wife, which spelljammer and planescape are helping a lot with. Keep up the good work, I look forward to mondays because of you guys 🎉

I love this ring, though I have it written in as a reason for my world to have an ice ocean. Also, can you just imagine a barbarian getting this and when they rage the area around them becomes a storm of ice.

In a historical context, Jarl is pretty close to the level of King. It also kinda means chieftain but its just below or close to King.
@InquisitorThomas11 ай бұрын
Yes, but also most Jarldoms were generally fairly small, like you’re not the Jarl of Sweden, you’re the Jarl of a county in Sweden.
@lordInquisitor11 ай бұрын
So comparable to a Duke?
@drunkdraugr11 ай бұрын
@@lordInquisitor it could be, especially later into the medieval period when Norway, Sweden and Denmark were actually becoming kingdoms but Jarls could also be equivalent to Princes.
@drunkdraugr11 ай бұрын
@@InquisitorThomas There wasn’t exactly a codification of the title, yes it would be weird if someone said they were Jarl of Sweden instead of King of Sweden but a lot of times in history Kings were also called Jarls.

I bought this novel not too long ago and read it. Its a fun and interesting read for a DnD novel.

I don't know if it's been suggested before, but Chris Perkins runs a game called Dice, Camera, Action! that runs through a lot of the early modules; starting with Strahd, ending with Waterdeep, and crossing over with Acquisitions Inc. Artus Cimber and the Ring of Winter feature pretty heavily as they go through Tomb of Annihilation.

The reason Artus isn't corrupted by the ring (as stated in the book) is essentially that his good intentions ward off its corrupting influence. Tomb of Annihalation is misleading in that it paints the ring as an actively malicious evil. The novel tells us that rather the power it offers is corruptive. The ring offers tremendous, murderous power to those who would use it. Those who use it to selfish ends lose control completely, resulting in its power erupting, causing spectacular collateral damage. When used toward selfless and good ends, one can resist it. When Artus donned the ring for the first time, he saw a vision of a Fareun buried in snow, with him as its icy king. He actively chose to reject this and use the ring for good, and so the ring submitted to him. Tldr Artus is just that guy

The tabaxi of Chult were known as cat warriors in Chult despite being human. when the jaguar folk migrated from maztica to chult they were assumed to be "tabaxi" and the jaguar folk just ran with it rather than correct it. This doesnt cause issues because unknown to most even in chult the human tabaxi have been wiped out.
