Guys, having watched all the episodes up to this point, I can confidently say that this is one of my favorite d&d shows, but not for the reason you might think. Let me explain. If anyone reading this is interested in getting into d&d or knows anyone who’s interested, please don’t point them to one of the mainstream series. Send them to a series like this first. This series is representative of what a d&d game should be. It’s one thing for a series to have flashy intros, slick layouts, and movie-quality production, but at the end of the day, that isn’t really what d&d’s about. It’s about a group of everyday people getting together, playing their own way, and having fun throughout the entire experience. Too many people who have seen only mainstream d&d shows get upset or frustrated that their own experiences aren’t like that of the mainstream shows or they feel like their sessions aren’t up to the standards mainstream shows set. I think the Dungeon Dudes and their friends laugh together and seem to enjoy themselves overall more than any other show I’ve seen or listened to, and it’s because they’re really just playing for themselves, not trying to put on a show. The fact we’re watching them and also having fun is just icing on the cake. Hope this post made sense and someone gains something from my little spiel. And lastly, thank you, Dungeon Dudes, for your continued efforts and for bringing enjoyment to us all!

Yeah I saw a video on this same topic but with specifically Critical Role as the central focus cuz while the show is indeed an spectacle of talent and rp well not everyone is a professional voice actor able to seamlessly transform into the character.

@@devin5201 I can understand the idea that most home games won't play out the same way Critical Role does but it's pretty dishonest and flat out wrong to act like Critical Role is a big production where the players aren't enjoying themselves and are just putting on a show. Critical Role first and foremost is a game between very close friends who are having an incredible time and are emulating their personal home game.
@devin52015 жыл бұрын
@@SoyDrinker That's very true, I apologize if I worded it in such a way, my message is supposed to be that the way Matt Mercer and the rest of the CR group play is fundamentally different than the way most other dnd groups would play because as actors their idea of how to enjoy the game leans more toward heavy RP and character development.

Hehe, yeah. From a power-gamer point of view, a cleric, or maybe even a well-played/built-druid, would make this group really unstoppable... if a bit more cliche and "on-brand", trophe for D&D-groups. Heck, even a Swiss Army Knife, off-healer/blaster or something like a Bard, Artificer, Paladin, Warlock, or whatever other fancy newish sub-class-tricked-out character could bring that versatility & healing to make this small group more of a standard-4-PC, 5e-powerhouse-party for sure. However, it might be just as interesting, perhaps more-so, to see them running it the way they are [instead of doing it more 'by the book', in relative safety of having a "well balanced party composition"]. Having 4 players instead of 3 though also might shift the entire campaign emphasis on spending more time stomping enemies quickly in combat rather than doing more roleplaying/exploration/social (non-combat) stuff that smaller groups tend to spend a bit more time doing. Just my armchair 2c ;)

2:07:00 the player gets a critical strike and gets 6 damage on a 2d10 roll. It just doesn’t feel special like a critical strike should be, especially when the next player immediately does maximum damage on a plain ol’ regular attack and kills the Giant Rat. I recommend using a house rule for crits that I have found works very well. If a player gets a critical strike; allow them to do maximum normal damage and the roll once for extra damage. It guarantees that the player always gets to deal a massive blow. Nothing is worse than getting a critical strike and then rolling two 1’s.

A few common questions we got during the stream: *When will video on demand be available?* Video-on-demand episodes will be available publicly the following Friday after the livestream. *What level are the characters?* The characters started at 3rd level. *How were ability scores generated?* We used an array of 17, 15, 13, 12, 10, 8, plus racial modifiers. Some of the characters had small tweaks to tertiary stats to better represent how they plan to roleplay the character. *Who did the art?* Each player drew their own character art. Kelly and Jill drew the artwork for the opening. *Who did the opening narration?* That was our good friend Hundred Year's Boar. Check out his KZbin channel! *Where did you source the music?* The music and ambience is by Tabletop Audio. You can find their original, 10 minute ambiences and music for your games and stories at tabletopaudio.com/ *Where was the third camera?* We didn't have a camera on our Dwarven Forge setup tonight. We record our regular episodes using DSLR cameras, which require additional hardware to use for live streaming. Instead, we're using two Logitech C920 webcams to record the live stream. In future episodes we will have a third C920 camera in place and we're confident our stream setup will support it. The video in the first episode was a bit over-exposed as we forgot to disable the autofocus on the C920s. We'll correct that for future episodes as well.

Dungeon Dudes about the shards, if they're from the meteor. How do you justify the statement by River that they can't be cracked, forged or cut but they're all pieces of the meteor assumedly? Short of each "gem" only ever being the size it is... doesn't make much sense given the general way precious gems like diamonds work so if it's pressured magic then it should be just as viable an option as for normal gems. The way they work makes it seem like they're living things with a sort of plant membrane but if that's the case they should be able to be grown larger or amplified in strength. I hand it to your group you made an interesting material here but it doesn't make much sense outside of the "it's magic" justification which personally is never satisfying.

All of you guys are amazing. I can't wait till the next episode!

Awesome to see where it all began. I’m three sessions into DMing a Campaign using much of the Drakkenheim setting rules. Except in my Old World the contamination is everywhere except for their mountain monestary and they are running missions down into the ‘haze’ wastelands beneath.

Hmm im seeing mordheim in this... Rat people check, Glowing stone that is very valuable so you want even shards and fragments, check said shards make things sick and mutate check Im looking forward to this

This is awesome, love how yall can play dnd without using the f-bomb in every sentence, unlike other popular dnd streamers.

I see Kelly was not lying about his propensity for fire spells. Scorching Ray and Burning Hands right off the bat, followed by Fire bolt. I've watched your other videos and just now watching you guys play. I love it. Thanks.

Very late to the ball here (apparently 9 months late), but yes! I literally came from their Wizard guide video where Kelly mentions his love for fire spells, to this one, and thought of the same. :P

Just started playing this with a group a couple weeks ago. My monk character killed 3 rats in one turn, then on the second turn beat the rat king, and then promptly convinced the rats that I was their new goddess. An in-game week later they brought me 1 delerium shard and 8 fragments. Worth it. Love seeing how different groups play so differently!

This was a blast, guys. Excellent description, Monty. Well played for the rest of you. After all, if you don't horribly traumatize an NPC, did you even play D&D?

In my first ever session, I put an old farmer in a coma by accident. To make it up to him, my party accidentally ruined his crop fields forever

I am a new DM (4 sessions in) and I LOVE the Dungeon Dudes channel. I've already found myself referencing many of the points in your videos during my sessions and it really helps ALOT as a new DM. My group is fairly loose and we aren't constantly referencing the rules but watching videos makes that even easier so we can just keep the game moving and get to the memorable moments. D&D is super awesome and I feel so honored to be a DM. Keep up the good work, us new DM's are very appreciative of your channel!

I've been on a dungeon dudes binge, but jeez, this dming is incredible. I've definitely picked up some stuff and some ideas. Most of the time I feel like I could be in the game. Great description and a great setting so far

What a cool campaign premise. It’s like the West Marches meets Roadside Picnic/Stalker. And a bit of Dark Souls thrown in.

I think it would be nice if you had the character names in brackets or something beneath their names, otherwise zero complaints, amazing job, thanks!

Ive been hearing people talk about Critical Role so much but I am already invested in your characters, story, and style that I dont even want to watch them. Your videos got me here and I appreciate it so much. You helped answer most of my Lore Bard questions. Episode 2 here I come.

I loved the pace, and I kinda liked the balance of funny moments and the creepy and mysterious scenario. Good video, I'm wanting to see more, and I'll.

I am going to run Drakkenheim for my friends later this summer, so I have come back to rewatch to get more inspiration! Thanks to the dudes, Joe, Jill, Kyle, and all the other wonderful people who made this world and community possible!

What a great video. I tried listening to critical role and lastes maybe 20 minutes, before writing off the idea of listening to d&d. Then i gave this a shot. I finished this video in a day and is already on my way to episode 2 :). This way of doing d&d show apperently really speaks to me. Great work!

i love how you make the combats interesting. they are more than the typical land party vs monsters, they have components to make it interesting and different and it challenges and intriuges the characters. This is my favourite D&D channel by far!
