Teiflings by definition can look like humans just with horns and a tail all the way to full on red demons. It depends if you take after the mortal or infernal side more. It's just most DnD players choose to go ham with bright colored deep infernal blood teiflings.

Aren't Tieflings passed through bloodline? So your character could have evil somewhere in their ancestry but doesn't mean they follow that path or has ever had anything to do with demons or otherwise.

@@rickbotic6063 Absolutely. They have infernal heritage, but they're free to choose their own path. That said, there's a lot of stories and superstition surrounding them. In the Forgotten Realms, a backstory like Doric's is not uncommon.

Exactly. Heck, they both Jay and Adam know who Jester "Clutch Cupcake" Lavorre is and what she looks like. Hint, it's not red. That's the color of her dead-all-along pet, Sprinkle. One of favorite running jokes from C2, btw.

“It’s never making fun of itself.” This is my complaint about a lot of geek culture movies. You can tell when a director is having fun vs hating that he has to do this. Ex: the 1st X-men movie.
@brak666

I think they wanted to keep the characters distinct. A party with a Bard, a Druid, and a Sorcerer has three full spell casters, which works fine when everyone is playing their own character. But in a movie it works differently. If all three of them are using spells, it makes it difficult for the audience to tell what's unique about each of them. So, they focused on different aspects of each character; Charisma for the Bard, wild shape for the Druid, and spell casting for the Sorcerer.
@Kasino80

That's actually a really good point. I like that the Bard is more a motivational speaker/life coach for the group.
@Halbam

Yup, they just confirmed that in an interview. Too many spellcasters would have made it too confusing and also gave them too many tools to overcome all problems, which would've hurt the drama of it all.

Re: displacer beasts - As a noob, they did an amazing job explaining how they work without on-the-nose exposition. It’s funny you said “just make her blue” because there is more support for a teifling that looks like her than a blue one. To quote the PHB: “Their skin tones cover the full range of human coloration, but also include various shades of red.” Jester was only blue because she was half water Genasi.

To me, the Doric being a tiefling was more about why she cares so much about saving the Emerald Enclave (they took her in when her birth parents abandoned her) and/or giving her a Tragic Backstory™ that all PCs need. Also the PHB notes that all human skin tones are possible for tieflings, though their hair is typically dark, they have sharply pointed canine teeth, and their eyes are a solid color "with no visible sclera or pupil". So not PHB accurate, but D&D is a game of bending rules and the PHB description of tieflings also disqualifies Jester, so...

Tieflings being as uniform looking as they currently are is also a Hasbro mandate on the writers because it helps sell miniatures. AD&D 2e Tieflings having whatever infernal touches you wanted to whatever degree you wanted, leading to infinite customizability, results in making it very hard to sell miniatures.

What I imagine happened in the meta-fiction of the table playing this game, is that Doric’s player just wanted the foresty imagery of their Druid having what seem like satyr horns, and came up with their backstory about being a Tieflings raised by Wood Elves to justify it, and tied it in nicely when they were told that the campaign would be about robbing the new Lord of Neverwinter.

What drove me over the edge was when she used armor in one fighting sequence, led me to believe she's a fighter with perhaps a tavern brawler feat for that proficiency with improvised weaponry. It was a very fun movie. The more that I think of it and pick the scenes apart, the better and better I see the masterful substructure. The writers, directors, and actors subtly pair multiple layers of feelings in each scene. I think film schools will study this movie as a masterwork of layered (often layered with sillyness without diminishing the moment) storytelling. I often felt like laughing and crying at the same time. Even the seeming pointless side quests had a point, perfectly true to the source material. This was the most dnd thing I have ever seen.

Regarding Edgin and the bardic magic, one of the things I really enjoyed was the subtle uses of what I assume was bardic inspiration. There were moments when Holga was fighting and the fight wasn't going her way and then he said something and she started winning again. Although I would agree that there was no visual evidence of bardic magic. Having looked at his statblock on dndbeyond, it appears that almost all his spells are enchantment spells. He's got Friends, Message, Charm person, Disguise self and Suggestion. They didn't give him anything flashy... But they didn't seem to show any of those. Weirdly, the paladin statblock doesn't have any smites. Although his sword does radiant damage... I assumed he cast magic weapon on it, but I think it's just a magical blade. I think they could have done something more with his divine magic, too. But I really loved him as a character. He started speaking and I was just 'oh, he's _that_ sort of paladin... oh yeah, he really is.' The Lawful Good just poured off him. The clip at the end was really fun! Looking forward to it. So much! Very excited.

Saw it the other day- loved it! It didn't take itself too seriously but there were moments that were a bit more sombre. I could imagine this being a campaign. SPOILERS . . . . . . . . . I loved that they had the "guest character" i.e. Xenk and there was definitely a Critical Role easter egg which made me giggle. One of my favourite parts was the Speak with Dead sequence- as someone who plays a Cleric, it was a very refreshing thing to see. We definitely had a few moments of Bardic Inspiration, which was great. Me and my friends were also really pleased that Edgin and Holga's relationship stayed purely platonic throughout- I think a few were worried that they would try and force a romance but I loved how their relaitonship plays out including with Kira. It was very wholesome. And it was great how Simon's component pouch was him essentially rolling a dice for Wild Magic. It was also very typical how they had these great plans that went wrong and then they had to improvise- I don't know a single campaign where something like that hasn't happened. Overall, I was really pleased with it.

One of my favorite things I found myself doing during the movie was listing off the monsters or spells that showed up. SPOILLERS . . . . . . Watching Simon and the Red Wizard have what is essentially and arm wresting match with two Bigby's Hands was so fun to me. And watching the overly complicated bridge puzzle fall apart in the first second felt so DnD to me. Even Xenk "smelling" evi, because a Paladin's Divine Sense allows him to smell evil? And it only worked on the assassins because they're undead? So much fun just recognizing the little things. It was about as serious as I wanted it to be for a DnD movie that players were actually playing through.

As a bardlock, I too wish we saw more bard action. Melee or magic. (Druid magic too, but can´t really blame her, her wild shape was awesome.) It just feels like they "locked" the magic to the "pure" arcane caster classes. Sorcerer and wizard. (No nature and divine magic. And whatever bard magic is.) It doesn´t even have to be action/combat magic. For example, have the bard use the token of "speak with dead". Have the druid talk to some trees and/or animals.

Re: Edgan not using any bardly magic. 1) this isn’t 5E the movie, and in the history of D&D bards haven’t always been full spell-caster. 2) Much more likely, the screenwriters wanted in give everyone a niche, and having Edgan and Simon cast spells disrupts that, leading to confusion among the casual audience.

After I gave it some thought, I realized that I have no idea what level the characters are supposed to be. Then I remembered that Druids do in fact get unlimited Wild Shapes. *At level 20* But there´s no way they are all that high-level, right? I mean, maybe the Paladin, but still. Slight spoilers for the ending. (a spell) Well, the Red Wizard at the end does cast (I believe) meteor swarm, though it´s less destructive than I´d imagine. She´d have to be very high level (18?), but till, that´s what I´d expect from a wizard BBEG. So our heroes must be at least a pretty decent level to take her on...

Thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I was also waiting for Chris Pine's bard character to do some magic, maybe with his lute playing or singing, but I understand the decision to leave the party's spellcasting to Simon the sorcerer. I had some doubts about Hugh Grant being cast in a D&D film but he really gave a stand out performance as the traitorous former member of their party. Though there was lots of humour, the writers and actors took the entire project very seriously and it worked.

I think Jay and Adam's criticisms are valid and the more you think about it the more you can find little wishes of what you wanted more of. I guess they'll just have to do that sequel we are all hoping for!! My wife enjoyed it and at best she "tolerates" my love for DnD and Critical Role so that's definitely a win!

For me, it was a 10/10. The pulled it off, and the comedy wasn’t forced, it felt natural.

2:38 *slow clap* Very well put Jay!. Very well put! And yes, the very apt description: Fits very well in the pocket 16:04 Indeed! (Thanks Keyleth for the headdress) I had not understood she was a tiefling until she said it! and yeah I might agree with Jay, just make her an elf. 17:06 Yes, Jay. there was not many points in the movie when the bard actually did bard things. I don't think there is any magic in that bard... My review: GIVE. ME. MORE. 30:50 YES!! thank you!

“casually very good” is the most accurate description Didnt blow me away, didnt offend me, had a good time The most jarring aspect at first was the lack of Bard songs - Chris Pine didnt break one out till 45 min in. Sam Riegel really has ruined the class for pretty much anyone. Then I remembered singing isn’t the only form or charisma, and this is a movie for kids and can’t go fully fresh cut grass

Finally watched the movie. It was a ton of fun. Felt like an adventure that was shortened down in a retelling, but kept everything important. The DMPC paladin Xenc guy stayed as long as he needed, and left as soon as he wasn't. The party was pretty fun though i do wish the bard character way actually able to do something more with his music. The sorcerer was pretty cool, I liked that as he got more confident his magic seemed to get more powerful as well, like his charisma based magic came from his confidence that his spells would work. The more sure if himself he was, the stronger the magic was. And i like he was a wild magic sorcerer as well. I like they used the actual dragon from the canon in the underdark part and kept that he was a chonky boy. I'd definitely let the druid turn into an owlbear if they had seen one. Rule of cool is worth it sometimes. Sofina was a fun boss character setting up the bigger boss. Forge was just what i expected when they introduced him as a conman. One of my favorite jokes in the movie is near the beginning when they're escaping using the arococra and the judges reveal they were going to be released if they hadn't. Feels like something a DM would reveal at that specific time.

I think with a lot of these grievances on character class clarity are probably a result of them not wanting to get too meta with it at the risk of it feeling too fan servicy. That is a huge point of contention with lots of people these days and you guys even kind of made a point to mention how they didn't go too hard on the like "LOOK AT ALL THESE EASTER EGGS AND COOL STUFF". I think if they decide to make a sequel, they will probably feel comfortable with exploring more dynamic character class displays like Barbarian rage, Bard abilities, more Druid magic, Paladin smite, etc.

I will say they maybe just showing the first couple of levels of the characters. Where they have yet to choose their sub classes. Hoping in there is going to be a sequel where they will be keyed in on the sub classes.

Yeah it feels like a blockbuster movie from the late 90s/early 2000s. Its very funny but the movie is never laughing at itself like Marvel movies tend to do. Definitely worth seeing in the theater.

Doric looks like the Tieflings from the art in Planescape by the original artist Tony DiTerlizzi. They changed the look and feel of Tieflings with 4e & 5e. They just announced that his art will be centered again in the new Planescape coming next year, so we'll see what the art looks like there. There a bunch of other spells that are bolts, I think other people pointed out it might be chaos bolt. My nitpick was that I wanted to see the group teeming up in combat more. Most of the fights were one party member against a bunch of mooks which isn't how it works. I wanted to see the Bard distracting with Viscous Mockery while the Barbarian wallops on them, etc. Yay Bonus Action!!!!!!

Dory's backstory and her teifling background has its own book prequel (recommend a ton), so the people who read it knows that stuff about her beforehand, and it help her make a lot more sense, and her growth during the movie way more impressive.

As a longtime DM and Critter, I enjoyed the movie a lot. Even though Jay's trailer reaction ensured that I remembered a chunky dragon was coming, I still laughed for a full minute while it waddled and rolled on the screen. To me, the things that worked the least were almost always Ed-related. It felt like someone artificially added a normal-ish role for Chris Pine: let's make him a bard, but not a magical one or a seductive one. Let's start with George Clooney from Ocean's Eleven and adjust it as little as possible. About Bonus Action: Guys, I feel ya. When I was starting as a 'career DM', I recorded an amazing 6-hour game, but unfortunately, the audio sucked. I tried to transcribe our speech for subtitles, but after a couple weeks of intense work, I was only 45 minutes in. I had to give up. Hang it there!

Totally agree about Doric the Druid’s arc. It wasn’t bad per se, but it felt like it was a bit of an afterthought and the payoff didn’t really feel earned. I suspect there might be some material that got left on the cutting room floor for her. I liked her as a character and she’s pretty darn cool overall, but it just never quite clicked for me. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and I really hope it’s successful enough to justify making more because what they’ve done here is establish a setting and world that is ripe for more stories, and you can use this setting to tell practically any story you want. That’s the beauty of D&D, it’s a solid foundation and framework to build upon that can support just about anything.
